Our Magical WDW Adventure ~ 23 Days of Fun, Food, Cocktails... London Trip 2/8

Ok so back to our London mini-trip, and on to our third day.

Monday

We got up earlier today as we had a lunch reservation for 1pm ad I knew if we didn't have breakfast early I wouldn't be able to eat a big lunch. So we went down to breakfast, this morning there was no-one there at all, the whole place was nearly empty. I stuck to fruit salad and had a made-to-order waffle which was very good, along with tea and juice. It was all very good again and there was plenty more today and no big queues to get food either. After breakfast we went back to the room to get ready and then headed off to the tube. We decided to walk to the High Street Kensington station again as the line went direct from there and it was nice to get the walk. We got the tube to Harrod's and this time had a wonder around some of the higher floors. We love going to the pet floor, they have such cool stuff there, like mini sofa's and beds for cats and dogs. They also have some animals there and they had the cutest kitten, the lady had her out and she was so fluffy and loved being stroked. I think Nick is going to stop letting me go there as every time we go I beg him to buy me some more kittens, they are always so cute. So we looked around for a bit and then decided to walk up to the restaurant as it was getting near our reservation time and we weren't completely sure where it was.

Again not the best picture but this is one of the beautiful ceilings in Harrod's as you catch the elevators up

We were meeting our good friends Mel and Andy for lunch and had a reservation at Gordon Ramsey's Boxwood Cafe. We got there and they were already in the bar so we joined them and had some cocktails. I had a really yummy passionfruit cocktail, I'm not sure what was in it, maybe rum, chambord, passion fruit juice and something else I think.

My yummy cocktail

Well we sat at the bar for a bit chatting and catching up and then were seated at our table. The restaurant was very nice, its quite contemporary with dark wood and cool shapes, but quite casual at lunch.

We ordered some more drinks, I got a mojito as Nick was drinking them and said they were great, and we looked through the menu. The set menu was quite different to the one we had seen on the net and none of us fancied it, and the main menu was mostly fish, which I don't really eat, and they only had one steak left, at 1pm :confused3. So Andy ordered the ribeye steak, Mel and Nick had braised beef and I had salt and pepper prawns. We all really enjoyed our food, my prawns came with a really nice salad with roasted vegetables, the braised beef looked so tender and was apparently really tasty and the ribeye steak was huge, probably the biggest I have seen. We decided to get some dessert too so on Mel's recommendation we got the chocolate fondue, which came with biscotti, banana and homemade marshmallow to dip in. It was really good, but really rich, chocolate lovers would be in heaven.
After we finished dessert we paid the bill and got our coats, surprisingly it was already nearly 4pm. Andy and Mel were catching a taxi back to their hotel and Nick and I were going to walk back to the tube. We said our goodbyes, it had been a lovely lunch, good food and setting and great company. So Nick and I walked back to the tube and went back to our hotel for a bit of a break before the evening. So we had a rest, watched some TV and changed for the evening and then we headed back out. We caught the tube and aimed to go to a few shops first but it was already 7pm and we were seeing a show at 7.30pm. We made our way to the theatre, tonight we were seeing...

Nick had told me a while back he wanted to see it, and although I really couldn't remember the story I knew I loved the music. We had really good seats, quite central in the third row and the place was pretty empty, we had no-one either side of us. The show itself was really brilliant. The two main singers were brilliant, and they had added some more contemporary bits which seemed really weird at first but made the show even better. The guy who played Joseph was so good and had an amazing voice, and we didn't realise until the end it was his first night. We were very impressed.

Thoroughly impressed with the show we decided to go and get some dinner, as it was already nearly 10pm. We walked past Trafalgar Square, through Leicester Square which is always nice to walk through at night, past the Colosseum and to Chinatown. We decided to try again as we weren't very impressed the other night so went to a little restaurant we had been to before. The restaurant is not particularly plush but they do a menu for £10 per person for crispy duck and then 2 main dishes, rice and vegetables. The food was much better, the portions much bigger, the service was much, much better even at this time, and it cost under half the price. Lesson learned, stick to what you know. After dinner we made our way back to the hotel again.

Just a few pictures as we walked to Chinatown, Trafalger Square

So we got back to the hotel, had a few drinks, watched some TV and then bed.

I actually loved Mamma Mia on stage much better than the movie. I saw it in London in 2003 and wanted to see it again when it was here last year. You really should try and see it if you can!

Really, I kind of want to but not sure. I saw Chicago the film first and absolutely loved it. Catherine Zeta Jones is just perfect for her part, its one of my favorites. I then went to see the show and was so disappointed. I kept thinking if I had seen the show first I probably would have loved it :sad2:. And with Mamma Mia, I think the cast in the film are perfect. I saw this programme about the making of the show and the cast just looked so wrong. And I would miss all the beautiful setting, I so want to go there ;)

Ariel, great birthday trip! I'm glad you guys had a good time!

Thanks, it was very good :thumbsup2

I also enjoyed Mama Mia on B'way much more than the movie. They really get the audience going and the two times I've seen it, the crowd is up and dancing at their seats at the end!

I saw Chicago on B'way w/ George Hamilton as Billy Flynn. I thought he was excellent! I also love the movie; I agree that Catharine Zeta Jones was outstanding! I really like her work.

Yes I think I will go and see it, and if I don't expect much then hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised. I think half the problem when I went to see Chicago was that the cast was all wrong. Big Mama was played by Gaby Roslin, someone who used to be a presenter over here. Anyway think the opposite of what you expect big mama to be and thats her. She is a little, skinny, blonde white woman, she really didn't fit :scared:

Tuesday

We were up early for our final breakfast, the fruit salad here was so good I was going to miss it. After breakfast we went back to the room and got ready and then packed our things. We didn't have to check out until 12 so took our time and finally just before 12 left the hotel and headed to the station. No this is why we usually drive when we stay over, because I hate having to lug cases on and off the tube and around the stations, especially when its busy. Luckily it was quite quiet so we didn't have too much trouble. We caught the train to Covent Garden as Nick wanted to take me to the Disney Store again. Being the lovely boyfriend he is he brought me this cute Tinkerbell t.shirt I had been eyeing up the other day as a thank you for the trip.

I only have the picture I took from the shop at the moment

So after our trip to the Disney Store we headed to Wagamama's for lunch. We love Wagamama's, its such a great restaurant. It is a chain but isn't like the usual chains you find. Its Japanese, but the menu mostly consists of noodles, not much fish, and all the food is cooked fresh. Its also really quick, we have been to the Central London restaurants at prime lunchtime a few times and have never waited more than 10 minutes from ordering to getting our food. And it has always been really good. So we were seated straight away, the restaurant only got about half full but it is quite large (we don't usually go to the Covent Garden one as we love the Embankment one). The seating is long tables and you get sat next to other people, and when you order they write your order on your place mat. The food is also brought out as and when its ready, so its all hot and fresh.

Excuse the random people, but I just wanted to show the seating, and the open kitchen so you can see the food being cooked fresh

Anyway we both ordered peach tea to drink, I ordered one of my 2 favorite dishes, the chicken Katsu curry, Nick ordered chicken itame and we ordered a side of duck gyozas to share. The food came pretty quick, my curry was 2 chicken breasts in panko breadcrumbs with rice, curry sauce and a lovely salad. Nick's was a coconut based soup dish with chicken and noodles in and the gyozas are duck dumplings. It was all really good as usual.

After our lovely, and very reasonable lunch (one of the cheapest places we have been to in London and one of the only ones that don't add a service charge on), we strolled though Covent Garden. It was quite busy today and there were a few street entertainers out

We got the tube to Liverpool Street Station where we grabbed and Starbuck's, strangely this was only our 2nd of the trip (we usually have about 2 a day in London :rolleyes1). We then caught the train home again, I passed the time by reading my brilliant new Disney guide I got for Christmas. Soon enough we were home again. Sadly our great mini-trip had come to an end. We had a great time, but now we are even more ready for Disney :goodvibes

Wow what a great weekend trip! You guys just do so many great things I can't even comment on them all lol You said the tube is supposedly more clean than the subway...all I can say is I hope it is  The subways are very convenient in NYC but some of them are pretty gross and they definitely smell funny. It's better than paying for a taxi most of the time though.

I never heard of the show Joseph, what was it about? I'm glad you and Nick enjoyed it. And that Tink shirt is sooo cute! :cutie:

If the subway is worse than the tube then I think I will be walking when I come to NYC. As much as I love London I could never live there as I HATE the tube :headache:. Its nearly always packed, its so hot and stuffy, people are so ignorant and rude, I just couldn't handle having to go on it every day. But then thats a lot like London, very busy and full of rude, ignorant people.

Joseph is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Its a British musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who wrote music for lots of West End and Broadway musicals including music in Evita, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Super Star and Cats (Memories). Tim Rice is a lyracist and has also written songs for the Lion King and Aladdin, among others. Its based on a biblical story, and about a dreamer, the favorite of 12 sons of an Israeli family. The brothers plot to kill him after his father gives him a multi colored coat, and he ends up going to jail and certain things before being made the Prince of Egypt. Its a nice story, and the music is amazing. Its very popular amongst school choirs over here, most schools teach the story. I am surprised it hasn't been on Broadway :confused3

Ohhhh ok, I should have known it was Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, I thought it was just Joseph lol I have heard of J&tTCDC. I didn't know the story behind it though. It sounds like a good story and it may have been on Broadway at one point, I'm not sure.

The subway in NYC is also stuffy and crowded but any time I have been on it most people just keep to themselves. Theres always the exception to that but as long as you don't stare at someone too long and you hold onto your purse, you'll be alright

Sorry I should have said it was J&tTCDC. I knew the story when I was younger, we did it in school and performed it in the choir, but I had completely forgotten what it was about. I still remembered all the songs, but then again Sophie performed it with the choir a few years ago and I went to watch the performance. They are great. The show has only come back recently. They did a reality show on TV to find the Joseph, hosted by Andrew Llyod Webber, but the guy that one had just finished before we went. I was quite glad though as the guy we saw was amazing. They have done the same kind of shows to find the main characters for Sound of Music, Grease and Oliver too, the first two we have seen and were great :thumbsup2. Have you seen many Broadway shows?

I hate the tube most in Winter as you have to wrap up warm for when you are outside but then you soon get so hot on the tube. In the summer it smells bad, but is actually cooler as you wear less.

We had a show like that over here for the show Grease, a competition to find Sandy and Danny. I didn't watch the show but my parents saw Grease on Broadway and said it was really really good. I've seen Beauty and the Beast, Saturday Night Fever, Rent, Chicago, Avenue Q, The Drowsy Chaperone, Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas and I've seen the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall a couple of times. How about you which shows have you seen?

Oh I remember when the Grease competition show was on; I didn't watch it either. In fact, I loathe Grease! Absolutely cannot stand it. (Wait just one moment while I get hide behind a rock) LOL!

I saw Rent too while I was in school in DC.

Yes we had one for Grease too, to find Sandy and Danny, one to find Maria in Sound of Music, one to find Joseph in J&tTCDC and the most recent to find Nancy in Oliver. When are they ever going to stop :confused3

I am so jealous you got to see Beauty and the Beast, I wanted to see that show for so long and couldn't believe it ended before I got the chance. It would have been amazing to see it when it first came out and Angela Lansbury as Mrs Pott's, maybe they will bring it back one day :cloud9:. I haven't seen that many either as we watch one, fall in love with it, and end up watching it again and again. We have seen Chicago, Mary Poppin's, Lion King, Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Avenue Q, J&tTCDC, We Will Rock You (our favorite, we have seen it 5/6 times), Grease and then Disney on Ice and Holiday on Ice. There are quite a few I want to see at the moment, but we also want to see lots of the ones we have already, a few of which are closing :sad1:

You don't like Grease, shock horror :scared1:. No really, personally I love Grease, but I know loads of people love Dirty Dancing and although I enjoyed it, I am not in love with it. I think its ok :confused3. You should definitely go and check out some Broadway shows, they look so amazing. Hopefully they wont get rid of Little Mermaid and Lion King before your DD is older enough to watch them, I bet she would love them too.

Ok everyone, its time to join me in my Double Digit Dance...

:mickeyjum :donald: :tigger: :ccat: :stitch: :simba: :goofy:

Only 99 more days to go, I am so excited :goodvibes

That's the thing, part of me wants to wait until they are old enough to see Mary Poppins and Little Mermaid. The other part of me says, "Who says I can only see it once?" I've seen Footloose, Beauty and the Beast, Swing, Les Mis, Chicago, Mama Mia, Rent, Dance of the Vampires, Thouroughly Modern Millie, Aida, and Taboo.

Oh wait, missed the countdown part! Let me join in!

I LOVE Grease the movie but I don't know how I would like the play. I mean, the movie is just so amazing and such a classic that I can't imagine the play would be able to live up to it. But, my parents said it was great and they've seen lots of shows. I saw Beauty and the Beast when I was only 8 or 9. All I remember about it was I got a light up toy that was a rose inside a case (like the movie, obviously). I don't have any clue of what actors were in it. You've seen a lot of good shows. I saw Chicago when the singer Usher was in it (because I'm IN LOOOOVE with him :bitelip: ) and it was just amazing. I would love to see so many more shows but they're just too expensive. $50 minimum for a ticket then $20 each for the train then food and everything...I have bills to pay!

Thanks :cheer2:

Of course you can see it more than once. See, you go once to check and see if you think its suitable for the kids, you can call it research ;), he he . You should definitely see Lion King, we watched it over here a couple of times and its amazing. The first bit literally brought tears to my eyes. Was Beauty and the Beast really good? And which has been your favorite so far?

Love the last update!!!! I saw Joseph when I was in London for my internship and thought it was really good too. I saw the original in Chicago when I was 10 with Donnie Osmond. It was my first big stage show that I had been to and loved it. I would act it out in my bedroom BY MYSELF...as the narrator. I was quite good at the ripe old age of ten. :lmao:

I love the tube!!! It is SO much cleaner and more effiecient than the ones in Chicago. I would love if they brought the tube here. Yes, it is crowded, but for city living, I don't think you can except much more than that. I just brought my book and ignored everyone. The circle line was by far the most busy so I would avoid that one if I could.

Here's to your happy dance!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cool1: :hyper: :hyper:

Yes the Broadway tickets seem to be a lot more expensive. I know if I came to NY I would want to see them all but at those prices I think we would have to limit it to a few. I think thats why I didn't like Chicago so much, it had a strange cast that didn't suit at all. A few one the ones I have seen have had famous people in but probably no-one you would have heard of. I was worried about Grease too as I love the film, but it was so, so good. The set was amazing, although it may be different in London, and all the songs and dancing were great. When we saw it Ray Quinn was in it, along with the Sandy and Danny who won the show. I don't know if you know who Ray Quinn is, I think he has released some music over there but am not sure how well it did. Anyway he was on X-Factor at the same time as Leona Lewis and came in second after her. He isn't an amazing singer (hes good but nothing special), but he is such an entertainer, so animated and perfect in the show. He was great.
