It's only been a month since we've returned and I've been meaning to post this since our return, but... life!

Anyway, we did the Eastern 7 day cruise and while we were on St Martin we kept seeing these "gold" coins for sale. We thought they were neat and our kids (both boys) thought they were PIRATES GOLD! Well, it wasn't until we were in St Thomas that DH came up with the idea of buying some of those gold coins and when we got to Castaway Cay, he would bury them in the sand and tell the boys to search for buried treasure.

Well - bottom line - BIG HIT with the boys!!! They thought they were PIRATES!! The entire time we were walking back to the ship they would show everyone the "gold they found".

If this sounds like something you're interested in doing for your kids, 2 pieces of advice:
1. Those gold coins were easier to find on St MArtin than St Thomas.
2. Don't bury them too far down and be sure you can find them so that you don't leave them on the island! Our kids are 4 & 6 so as they would be searching for one coin, DH would bury another. That way we didn't lose sight of them. We also hid some near the dino-dig by scooping sand in one of those pans and one of us would plant a coin in the pan and then hand it to the child. That was a pretty easy way NOT to lose the coins.

Hope someone else enjoys this idea! Our children did!

Great idea! Makes me wish my DSs were that age again :) At 16 and 13 years old I don't think they'd be interested in digging for gold unless it was real :p

Great idea. I don't have any kids yet, but I know a few couples who do and are going on the cruise. I will have to let them know your idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

My son once found a 'planted' gold coin at a camp ground & he just treasures the gold that he found!

Great idea!

Ok, will have to do! Sounds like fun, and I know my DSs (2 & 4) will really get a kick out of finding "treasures". Anyone know where I can get those coins at the Western ports? :wave2:

They may have coins at Key West - there is a Pirate Museum. I didn't see any coins on the Western, but wasn't looking for them...
