On the 29th of February 20 years ago, we closed on this house and moved in. It was blistering cold and windy and we didn't know if the movers would move us or not. We had been married 8 months and really didn't have that much stuff. My DH worked 2nd shift at the time and when the movers left, he did, too - to go to work. I worked the rest of the evening just to get our bedroom ready for the first night in our new house.
Now twenty years later on February 29th, I sent in our final house payment. Hip hip hooray!!!! I am trying to figure out what I'll do with the money I've been sending to the mortgage company all this time. We plan a few minor home improvements and I am going to take my two nieces to WDW!!! My DH is going on a hunting trip to West Virginia with a friend. After I relax and spend a little, I do plan on saving more.
Anybody know what comes next? Is there any likelihood that there could be a payment on anything outstanding I don't know about? Will the mortgage company mail us some documents showing we are all paid?? I hope some of you know!!

That is awesome! My parents finished paying their house about 6 years ago...trust me....you'll find pleanty to do with that extra bundle of money!

:p

Fantastic news!!! There are soooo many great things you can do with that leftover money each month. Hip hip hooray indeed!

Yes you should be getting a letter from the Mortgage company soon with congratulations!! You will probably get info on getting a home equity loan as well!!!

Just wanted to say congrats and doesn't it feel good?

I just paid off my truck and now I figure it will fall apart on me!! But it feels great to have one less thing to worry about for a while!!!!

When we paid ours off after 15 years of having a mortgage, we had a mortgage burning celebration! I made up a fake certificate and the whole family had fun watching it burn. Then we played Monopoly in front of the fire sipping hot cocoa! It was a fun family event.
We got a letter from our mortgage company of Congratulations. I think DH took our Deed down to the court and got it updated, showing the mortgage was paid in full.

Wow, not having a mortgage must feel wonderful!

Congratulations!

Here's an idea, a quicker trip to WDW!!!!
;)

Enjoy and God Bless you and your family

I know the feeling! How do you think I can afford to go to WDW as often as I do!:D

TC:cool:

Thanks for all the congrats!!!! I can't wait for the letter from the martgage company. I think it will sink in once we DON'T have to send in a payment next month.

That's awesome! Only 29.5 years and I'll be celebrating too  .

Since you asked about other payments, how about your real estate taxes? Did you pay them through escrow? If so, you may want to address how/when you will pay that bill so you do not have any unpleasant surprises. Let your insurance company know that you are paid off. That may lower your rate.
