I wish that I could say that booking next August's (2006) trip has been as easy as our previous 3 but it was indeed a challenge. There are a lot of unused frequent flyer miles out there and everyone wants the same seats! After a total of 7, 2 am nights I was able to get 2 first class and three coach seats to Honolulu. Forget being able to fly in or out of Maui. Those go faster than light speed! I almost had it but the agent lost one of the coach seats by putting DS 26 in first class. She saw her mistake immediately but then, so did a dozen other people. We are flying back from HNL as well. I dutifully stayed up the following night, as I tend toward OCD and wanted to be sure that I could complete the itinerary that I started. I was assured that the LAX to BDL portion would be assured and I could really call anytime. Glad I stayed up! DH and I are on one plane, through ATL, DSs on another, SLC and they get home two hours later. I have them waitlisted for our flight but if it doesn't come through, So be it. The other pieces of the puzzle are the interisland flights. Thank goodness for those United Frequent Flyer miles! We have used them before for interisland flights but I expected that, like AA and a couple of other airlines, that the miles requirement would have gone up. AA requires 10,000 miles per RT. United still only requires 5,000. What a great use of those small mileage accounts that are going to expire before you can save enough to get a domestic ticket. One DS had 7200, the other 5200. I used 15K from DH's account and we now have 5 RT tickets on Aloha! We will just have to purchase 5 one way tickets to complete our plans. Yesterday I did the car rentals. We need a mini van or a Ford Explorer (need the 3rd seat)
on all islands. I won't itemize each island, which are each on a separate reservation, but with codes that don't expire, our total rental car bill for 18 days, including taxes and fees will be $877. I plan to use the new entertainment book for an additional $25 discount at the counter for each rental, bringing the rate down to $802. Budget Rental has Ford Explorers but of course that could change in 11 months so I have a back up minivan on Maui reserved that will be $20 more. I have also booked the Hale Koa for 3 nights, one of the condos on Kauai for 5 and will wait to book the Maui condo. Outrigger on Kauai has a 3 day cancellation policy and the credit card just holds the room. They do not process the card so I lose nothing by holding the unit. I am open to any additional money saving suggestions. I will get a Safeway card, unless I can find the one I had, A Foodland card, and of course will bring my Costco card for Maui. The hard part of course is waiting to go!

First let me say Congrats... :cheer2: But I do have to add that I am jealous!!  Hawaii is one of my dream vacations and hoping in the next 5 years we will get to go.. We have been blessed to get to do so many things already and have visited other places and am thrilled, but in the back of my mind Hawaii is the ultimate vacation.. Our vacation plans are already all booked up for next year so it is definitely not a possibility but after that who knows.. My dream vacations that I have not accomplished yet are a Land vacation to Hawaii, a cruise to Alaska and a cruise to Panama Canal and a DisneyCruise.. and we are doing the Disney Cruise next year.. I have been fortunate to do all the other things I have wanted to do..

With 6 in our family, and the cost of the airfare, we would have been hardpressed to go once, let alone be planning our fourth trip. Only five of us are going on the next trip. We have saved the vast majority of these miles with our American Express Delta Sky Miles card. I would charge a candy bar if it wouldn't be ridiculous but I charge everything else; gas, groceries, Home Depot, etc earn double miles all of the time. I bought my winter's supply of home heating oil during the double miles period, along with our last trip to WDW. It does add up. Before you know it, you have enough miles for a ticket, then two, etc. My SIL would like to go to Hawaii but she doesn't trust herself with credit cards and she feels it would take too long. My attitude is, how long will it take to save the miles if you do nothing.

Hi!

We will be taking our first trip to Hawaii this December. There will be six of us going. Husband, DD15, and I will fly from Boston to Phoenix, then the three of us plus DS24, DD21, and her fiance, will fly from Phoenix to Honolulu.

I am SO excited! We're staying on Oahu and, like you, I must have everything in line and planned out and have been working on details for quite some time. We made our plane reservations and room reservations last January.

I'm trying to reserve tickets to the Polynesian Cultural Center but the online site won't let me do it until a month before the dates we want. It's frustrating because I figure the earlier we make the reservations, the better seats we'll get at the Horizons show.

I'm also in the process of making reservations for an island tour, and several of us want to take a surfing lesson. :)

It's fun doing all the research! I hope you have fun planning and have a great trip! :)

DawnCt1,

I am thinking about going back myself next year and am working on the month. Originally I thought November 2006 would be good, then I started to think about it and am now looking at sometime in Febuary.

I know what you mean about airfare. I went a couple years ago and flew coach on Delta from Chicago-Cincinnati-Honolulu and then Honolulu-Salt Lake City-Chicago because it was the cheapest way to go. This time, I plan on staying longer and going all out for this trip including first class air which is not cheap at all.

Dawnct1 - We are going to HNL in June 2006 - I have one reservation for a car rental that I'm not happy with. Can you tell what site you got your rental rate from? Any discount advise is appreciated. Thanks

Michelle

For Safeway, you can enter in your area code and phone number and it will also work for the Hawaii stores.
Sounds like you have alot down for your trip, enjoy.

My family and I went for 2 weeks this past June. 1 week in Maui, and 1 week in Kuai. It was our 3rd trip to the islands It is truely paradise. I would be happy to answer any question I can. One Suggestion is to book some of the more popular tours and activities early. The very popular ones close out fast and/or have limit to the amount of people they take. Two books I used is Maui Revealed and the Ultimate Kuai Guidebook. Be careful about showing those books around the islands though. Some locals hate them. Some times listening to the locals makes the best sense. DD and I took surfing lessons at a location the book said not to. Great location and great teacher. Have fun planning

Hi Michelle, go to www.cheaptickets.com www.orbitz.com or www.expedia.com

Put in your car requests, select Budget and then try one of these codes;
V816100
X989300
X474200

Also, my 2005 Entertainment book has a coupon for an additional $25 off at the counter for Budget after you get the lowest available rate. Good luck!

Hi Laz, I wore out the first two "blue books" and had to replace them. ;) The last time we went to Maui, we actually found Blue Pool on the road to Hana. There were signs everywhere; "turn back, go away, no parking". I guess someone knew we would park anyway and had can on a post to collect $$$.
For our snorkeling trip we booked the Scotch Mist. I absolutely LOVED it! Its a mono hull sail boat, as opposed to the crowded catamarans that most people take. There was only one other family on the boat. We went under sail and it was like being on a private charter for the same price. DH and I also went to Molokai for the day and took the mule ride to Kaulapapa. Truly a highlight of any trip I have ever taken anywhere. Where did you stay on Maui? DSs want to be on Ka'anapali so that means the Whaler or the Alii so they can walk to the Whaler shopping center. Since we are flying with FF miles on Delta, and considering their chapter 11 status, I am almost tempted not to book through an owner but through Resort Quest since they have a 3 day cancellation policy. Any thoughts?

Hi Jason, the cheapest way to go is with frequent flyer miles and award tickets. If you are watching your budget, avoid July or August. It is peak time. In the fall the rates drop, actually as soon as Sept.

If I were you, I would avoid buying tickets for admission into the Polynesian Cultural Center. Order the Hawaii Entertainment book and you will find lots of deals and I will bet that they will have a buy one get one free ticket. You can also find them in those free pamphlets and magazines that are in the airports and hotels. Might as well get in for half price. If you are renting a cr, don't bother with an island tour. Get Wizard Publications "blue book", I think its Oahu Revealed and follow all of the author's details. You can then go at your own pace and stop when you want. If you decide to hike up Diamond Head, take water and leave early in the morning. It gets hot in the crater on the way up. When you get to the top, the vistas and the breeze is fabulous.

Thanks so much for the info! I will order the Hawaii Entertainment book today, and I already have the Oahu Revealed book. Yes, we do plan on renting a car, (I guess it'll have to be a mini-van in order to fit six people), so maybe we'll rethink the island tour.

Yikes, if you are going in Dec, reserve that car now. Lock in at the lowest price and keep looking, or try Priceline as you get closer. The last time we went, I locked in the rental so early that priceline couldn't beat it.

The names of the area are beginning to fade, but we stayed at the Wailea Marriot below Haleakela (sp?). It use to be the old Outrigger. It is a hidden gem IMO. It is very hawaian and very laid back and quiet. It is located real close to the water because it was built before restricions came into place. It is on a rocky shore line, but a real close walk to the beach. We would sit in lounge chairs and watch the sun set over Lanai while the waves crashed against the rocks. Think about going over to Lanai for a day. Not crowded, decent snorkeling from the shore, and an empty beach. UFO Parasailing is the best! High and long trips!

In Kuai we always stay in Princeille. (Bali Hai sunsets are amazing) Don't let the "no A/C" notices scare you--you don't need it. Aloha!

We stayed at the Old Outrigger in Wailea also. DH and I loved it. Our two younger boys at the time loved it, the 20 somethings found that there wasn't enough happening. No real night life for them in Wailea. Marriott has it now and the prices went way up. We stayed in Hanalei at the Hanalei Bay Resorts. You are right about the views. We thought we would stay on the east coast this time. A little less traveling to other areas of the island and closer for DSs to walk to restaurants and shops.

Alamo consistantly has the lowest rates on all the islands. Their cars are really no frills models, but they are the cheapest. We go there 3-4 times a year, for business and monkey business ;), so I've rented my fair share.

Yesterday, I booked a trip to Maui for this Halloween, which is an absolute blast in Lahaina if you ever get the chance.

I am going for the first time in feb!!! We will be flying FF miles on Delta. Staying in Maui at the Maui Prince Resort. I am very excited.

What do you know about Discount Hawaii Car Rental? Rate seemed a few bucks cheaper.

Thanks. Cathy

Have wonderful trips, those of you going to Hawaii soon!!

We were there in July, and it was fabulous. I went for work, so our way was paid for, and we stayed on Oahu, but didn't get to any other island. It was still the best trip ever.

The day we rented a car and saw the entire island was the most fun.

Enjoy! :sunny:

You are right about Alamo but I need something along the size of the 3 seat Ford Explorer or a Chrysler mini van. Their mini vans are on the smaller side. I will keep looking however. Right now I have a mini van on Oahu for 3 days, a mini van on Kauai for 5 days, (which equals the price of a weekly rental) and a Ford Explorer with a mini van as a back up on Maui for 10 days. The price with taxes and fees is $877 total but I have "present at the counter coupons" that equal an additional $70.
