Our freezer just died--new one, chest or upright?

Just my luck, a few weeks before Xmas, and my poor 13 yo chest freezer has given up the ghost:sad2:. So now I have to rush out and get one (before my 1/4 beef, two deer, etc thaw out), and I hate to make major purchases that way (especially since DH is out of state). We've always purchased chest ones, because they're cheaper, but I HATE, HATE, HATE standing on my head to get stuff out of it.

So which do you have, which do you like, and does anyone have a good recommendation for one?

TIA!
Terri

If I had to do it all over again, I'd get an upright. We got a chest one since it was cheaper, but I hate digging through to find things .

It is shear torture for the obsessively organized part of me.

I could've written the exact same thing.

What brand do you have and do you like it? Doesn't seem like there's much except Sears Kenmore out there...

Upright all the way. We had a chest freezer that we NEVER used because it was too difficult. We have an upright now and we use it ALL the time.

I had a chest freezer growing up (that darn thing's lasted almost 30 years) and hated it. When we bought our own freezer we bought an upright and I love it. It's so much easier to manage; you don't lose things at the bottom and if you're short like me you don't worry about falling in.

I would get an upright. We have a chest because it was free (my grandma gave me hers when she moved). It is hard to find things sometimes.

Taking into account that you will be "older" (someday;)), do yourself a favor and go with the upright.. You think the chests are hard now? Wait until later..:rotfl:

C. Ann my bday is two days after Christmas, so I'll be "older" before you know it;). Now if I only didn't have to trudge out to the garage to get the food out of the freezer!

Any brands anyone likes?

I have an upright from Sears that I bought 27 years ago. The thing refuses to die!

When ours died, we switched from chest type which we had always had, to an upright. I like the upright better. Sears Kenmore.

That's funny. Me too. I've teetered like a teeter totter on ours trying to get something out. Not pretty.

We've had our chest freezer for about 35 years now. When we move (hopefully soon  ) we will need a new one, so I am intested in the responses too.
I like the chest......I am actually more organized with it since I can put things in corners and know where to look. I use those plastic cubes to divide things up.
But, it can be a pain to clean and it takes a lot of floor space.....new garage is a LOT smaller.

OP here, I use milk crates to organize my "stuff" in the chest freezer, too, but they get awfully heavy to lift! I really would like an upright, but ours is in an unheated garage, and from what I've read, I can't get a self defrosting one, because it won't work right under those conditions:confused:.

Thanks all!

We have an upright frost free freezer that we keep in our unheated garage.

It seems to work just fine:confused3

Ours is a Wood's brand but I am in Canada and don't know if you have that brand where you are.

I like the upright and am glad we switched but you cannot put as much stuff in an upright. At least that's what I find.

Because with a chest you just dump it all in there and it stays. With the upright you have to make the stuff stay on the shelf and not fall out when you open the door:thumbsup2

That being said I do prefer the upright over the chest freezer.
