Let me preface this by saying that we've probably been to Disney 20 times over the past 25 years. The kids (20 and 16) want to go when ever we can.
DH and I went on our honeymoon in 79 so we all love Disney.
This year I planned our WDW trip but decided to surprise my son with a trip to Universal for his 16th Birthday. He's into guitars and music so I booked three nights at the HRH.
Over the years DH and I have seen many changes to WDW. Some good and some not so good. Much of that special feeling we used to get at Disney was abundant at Universal. We ALL had an absolute blast at Universal. The front of the line passes by staying at HRH was the absolute best perk you could offer an on site guest. I loved E-Nights at WDW but am not real fond of EMH. The hotel was wonderful and a short walk to the park and City Walk during the evening was great. We live in GA and received a FL discount. I could never figure out why Disney doesn't do this.
Next year we will extend our stay at Universal
