We've been wanting to do Universal for years. We are huge Disney fans and always intended to make it over there, but since we never rent a car while at Disney, we always end up staying on property and never leaving. With the opening of WWoHP, we finally decided to make a Universal only trip.

Now, I've never written up a trip report, but I'll do my best here. I'll be breaking it up into manageable bits. Here are the players: myself, my mom, Angie, my younger sister, Jackie, and my best friend, Brooke. Just to get an idea of the demographics, we range in age from 66 years old to 35 years old.

My DM, DSis, and I flew into Orlando on Wednesday morning, September 15th. My BFF, Brooke, would be joining us later that night. We had a car service pick us up, Murray Hill to be exact. We've used them several times and have been pleased each time. This was no exception. After a brief grocery stop to pick up beverages and a few snacks, we arrived at HRH around 11am. I was most impressed with the staff from the get-go. They welcomed us sincerely to HRH and Bell Services took our bags instantly. I was also pleased to find that our room was ready immediately. Fantastic! I was anticipating not getting into our room until later that afternoon. We were in room 3108, a lovely room with a view of the butterfly garden and the waterway. The room was clean and well cared for, everything in working order. Derek, the Bell Captain, brought our bags up to the room and was most helpful with words of advice about the resort and the parks. After unpacking, we headed out for the day.

We took the walking path and found ourselves at Universal Studios in just ten minutes. After walking through the Lucy Tribute, the next order of business was getting something to eat. We got a couple personal pizzas at the International Food and Film Festival, splitting them since we weren't terribly hungry. They were fine, nothing to write home about.

We then worked our way around the park at a leisurely pace. We tried our hand at the Men in Black ride. I won in our party of three. I thought the ride was great, on par with Buzz Lightyear over at MK. We then survived a shark attack on the Jaws ride. We had a great boat captain. He was very natural with his delivery, even scaring my mom when he made her part of the act. :rotfl: We screamed at all the appropriate times and had a great time. We meandered down the street and found ourselves in San Francisco and on the set of a Disaster movie by none other than Frank Kincaid!! :worship: Lonnie, his unfailing assistant, took us through the casting process. None of our party got picked for starring roles (just fine with me...public speaking!), but we were content to be extras. The jokes were timely and I loved the subway scene. We all really enjoyed this one.

And then we came to the Revenge of the Mummy. My DSis does not like coasters or thrill rides, so she waited for us in the shop as my DM and I embarked on our adventure. What an awesome ride!! The theming, from start to finish, is impeccable. It being the first time we had ever ridden it, we didn't know what to expect as far as the coaster. This was compounded by the fact that it was dark and we couldn't see where we were going. We loved it!! And dare I say, I loved it as much as Space Mountain. Shocking!

We were starting to tire by this time, since we had been up very early that morning. We hit Shrek 4-D before heading back to HRH. I love the Shrek movies, so I was not disappointed with the attraction. They did an excellent job of incorporating the 4-D elements into a short Shrek adventure. Very well done! :thumbsup2

We relaxed at HRH, taking a short nap and freshening up before heading out for some dinner at Citywalk. We took the water taxi over, which would become our preferred mode of transportation while at HRH. At Citywalk, we walked around before choosing to eat at Latin Quarter. We were seated at an outdoor table. A Spanish guitarist was playing and was eager to play some Gipsy Kings when my DM requested it. Upon talking to him, my DM found out that he was from the same region of Spain as her parents. Dinner was excellent. I had the Chilean Salmon Ensalada, my DSis had the Cuban sandwich, and my DM had the Caribbean Crusted Mahi Mahi. We were all very pleased, especially since we had a handy coupon I got from Orlandocoupons.com! We walked around Citywalk for a bit before taking the boat back for an early night.

That's it for the first day. We were pleased that US wasn't too crowded that day. We were able to walk on nearly every attraction, especially with our Express Pass. I found the park to be very low-key and laid back. My only disappointment that day was not being able to ride HRRR. Of course, I would not be able to ride it at all, since it was down the entire time. Other than that, we were able to do most everything that first day and would have done more if not for our early flight that morning. Hope I haven't gone on too long.

Coming up next...my BFF's arrival and our first day at Hogwarts!! :yay:

Glad you enjoyed your first day/night at UO. It's always nice to hear confessed Disney lovers who actually give UO a chance and doesn't try to compare the 2 resorts too much. Looking forward to reading more.

i love reading reports.:yay:

i give you an A+ !!

i hope you continue as i will be back....

I promised to continue, so grab your brooms 'cause here we go.

My BFF, Brooke, got in late that first night. She had to work that day and couldn't join us until then. She managed to get enough sleep before waking early to head over to IOA. We had reservations for breakfast at the Three Broomsticks at 9am. Walking through IOA, our excitement mounted as we got closer to Hogwarts.

Let me stop for a moment for a little background so you understand where Brooke and I are coming from. We met while working at a bookstore about eight years ago in the midst of the Harry Potter craze. We fell in love with the book series and have seen nearly all of the movies together, usually at midnight when they are released. We have each read the books countless times, knowing every detail, no matter how small. When word of the WWoHP got out, we nearly died from excitement and vowed to be among the first to visit. In other words, we are huge HP geeks and darn proud of it!

So now, I think you can imagine how excited we were as we approached the park. We entered Lost Continent and soon caught sight of the Hogwarts Express. We both were literally skipping at this point! My mother was laughing at us and my sister was rolling her eyes, but they completely understood. While reading the books, I often tried to imagine these places, but I never thought that I would ever get to visit them. But there we were, standing in Hogsmeade!!

We couldn't look around right then, however, because we had to get to breakfast. Three of us had the English breakfast while my DSis had the American breakfast. I was the only one that had Pumpkin Juice with mine. I wanted the whole experience, after all! I liked the Pumpkin Juice, though I could definitely do without the Black Pudding. The rest of the breakfast was pretty standard. It was good, but nothing hugely special. What made it special was the fact that we were sitting in the Three Broomsticks! After eating, we made sure to take plenty of pictures, trying to capture the ambience of it all.

Outside, we walked around a bit, again taking lots of pictures. Having just eaten, we didn't want to ride anything for a little while, so we stood in line to get into Ollivander's. We didn't have to wait too long, maybe only 20 minutes or so. The wand selection is a cute show. I found the actor to be very convincing. He stayed in character the entire time and the two young girls picked to participate seemed to have a lot of fun with it. Afterwards, we shopped a bit in Dervish and Banges. I bought too much, but still not enough! :rotfl:

Before heading off to Forbidden Journey, we purchased our first cup of Butterbeer. I didn't know what to expect. Actually, I was afraid that it would be too sweet. But it was perfect and I think it tastes exactly how I always imagined it would. I tried it regular while everyone else tried the frozen. Having had both, I think I like them both equally. I just wish they could bottle it! I would have gladly purchased many bottles to take home. I'm already going through withdrawals!

So, drinking our mugs of Butterbeer, we strolled towards the castle. The castle looks amazing! I can't get over how well they did with the construction. But as great as it looks on the outside, it is even more spectacular on the inside! So much detail! The Mirror of Erised, the vials counting the House points, the talking portraits, the Sorting Hat, the Herbology classroom...all were wonderful. I was thrilled with Dumbledore's office, nearly squealing when I saw the Pensieve. I could have stood there for hours just looking at everything. And we got so excited when we saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione! And Hermione did a spell on us! :woohoo: At this point, we were on overload. So much to take in and see.

The ride itself was fantastic and lived up to the build up. The visuals were perfect and they included all of the best of the books. I've always wondered what it would be like to play Quidditch and this ride gave us a taste of that. The spiders were creepy, the Basilisk was scary, and then came the Dementors. I know they've been criticized, but I still thought they looked great. Of course, at that point, I was just screaming, "Expecto Patronum" and wishing I had my wand. :rotfl: The ride ended all too soon and left us wanting more. Naturally, we would ride it again, but not until later since the line had gotten rather long by this point and we still had stuff to do.

After buying more stuff in Filch's Emporium, we rode both Flight of the Hippogriff and the Dragon Challenge. I loved seeing Buckbeak and Hagrid's Hut in the queue for the former. It may be a kiddie coaster, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. And the Ford Anglia in the Dragon Challenge line was a nice touch as well. What a great coaster! We rode both "dragons" while there, unable to discern any difference but still enjoying each one.

We ended our first trip to Hogwarts with much picture taking and visits to Honeydukes and Zonko's. Again, the attention to detail was extraordinary. Very well done!

So, yes, my first visit to WWoHP was magical and everything I had hoped it would be and more. The theming is some of the best I've ever seen. The attention to detail was fantastic. The rides were thrilling and fun and unforgettable. My only quibble with the park is that I fear that they underestimated the popularity of it. Ollivander's could have been twice the size and thus able to accommodate more people. The same can be said for the shops. Dervish and Banges, Honeydukes, and Zonko's were all much to small to service all us Muggles. Hopefully, if they go ahead with the rumored expansion, they'll learn from this and expand any further shops and attractions.

I've gone on long enough. We did the rest of IOA that day as well, but I'll go into that in my next post. Thanks for reading!

Awesome Trip Report....I can't wait to see it for myself!

I'm back! I'll just pick up where I left off, leaving WWoHP and exploring the rest of IOA.

We headed out of Hogsmeade and made our way through the Lost Continent. I have to say we weren't all that impressed by it. Sinbad wasn't running until later, but we had heard mixed reviews anyway and weren't interested. Poseidon's Fury wasn't running at all that day, so we had to skip it as well. Mythos looked like an interesting restaurant, but we wouldn't be visiting at all on this trip. It just seemed that the LC was now a redheaded stepchild.

Anyway, we headed through LC and back to Seuss Landing. While there were no kids in our party, we are all big kids at heart, so we loved it. We didn't ride any of the rides this time around the park, but we did love the theming. We shopped in some of the shops as we meandered back to the park entrance area. We browsed in the shops there as well.

We then went through Marvel Universe. My BFF and I rode the Hulk coaster. It was amazing!! Or should I say incredible? Anyway, we loved it. One of the best coasters I've ever ridden. We then headed over to the Spider-man ride. Again, very well done.

We then meandered through Toon Lagoon, skipping the water rides for now. We would come back to them later before leaving the park. We stopped for lunch at Thunder Falls Terrace in the Jurassic Park area. Two of us had wraps, one had a burger, and one had the rotisserie chicken. The food was good and plentiful, which was good because we were hungry. It was nice to sit and enjoy the air conditioning for a little while as well.

Since we didn't see too many wet people getting off the Jurassic River Adventure, we figured we were safe riding this one now. We were right. We only got a little wet and that felt fine, quite frankly. It was really hot the whole week we were down there, so any relief from it was welcome.

At this point, we had looped back around to the WWoHP. Since the line wasn't very long, we opted to ride FJ again. Even better the second time around. We caught the tail end of the Tri-Wizard Spirit Rally and got some nice pictures. We rode Dragon Challenge and Flight of the Hippogriff again as well. It was about 2pm and the crowds were still quite fine at that point, so we were able to ride the last two rides without any wait at all.

We headed back out again, opting to ride the Cat in the Hat ride this time. Awesome! It was the book come to life. We really enjoyed it. Then my BFF and I decided to ride One Fish Two Fish. It looked like Dumbo with water incorporated. We went around to get into a fish only to find two of the three remaining fish getting drenched with water. We chose the third fish, which looked fine. Well, we chose poorly. We sat down and the water stream promptly changed direction. Well, we got absolutely soaked! We were laughing hysterically, along with some women who were in front of us and behind us who were in the same predicament. The ride was great and it provided a great laugh for everyone. When my mom saw us after the ride was over, she could not stop laughing. So at this point, we decided we might as well do the rapids ride.

The Bilge Rats ride was so much fun. I didn't too wet on it until the end, when apparently everyone gets it. We had such a great time laughing with the other people in our raft. They had already ridden, so they knew what we were in for.

We called it a day after that, heading back to our hotel. We stopped in the main Universal shop at the front of the park beforehand, picking up some souvenirs for ourselves and others.

Back at the hotel, we relaxed for a bit and took turns showering. When we were all ready, we headed out to Citywalk. We decided to eat at Pastamore that night. Again, I had a coupon from Orlandocoupons.com, which I heard about here on these boards. Dinner was very enjoyable. Our waiter was great and extremely friendly. I got the Pasta Primavera, my mom got the Lobster Ravioli, my BFF got Spaghetti Bolognese, and my DSis got Lasagna. All the food was great, with the portions being the perfect size.

After dinner, we walked around a bit, shopping and just enjoying the atmosphere. There was a band playing, mainly doing cover tunes, ranging from Bon Jovi to Lady Gaga. We then headed for some TCBY and called it a night.

Next up: a day at Seaworld!

Loved your report. I am looking forward to my first trip to WWOHP, but it probably won't be until fall of 2011. It is nice to read about other people's adventures. Glad you are having such a great trip.

Great report, I am loving it.
Lots of details and info even of your dinners.
We are die hard disney fans also and have also never done Universal.....we are booked for Dec. 2-6th for a 16th BD gift for my daughter.....she is HP crazy. Plus the weekend before this she is going to the new movie with friends so it will be fresh again!!
We are also doing the HP package and staying at Royal Pacific Hotel.....mainly because this was all that was on offer when I booked.....I may check out how much more HRH would be.
I have the 1 day 1 park meal ticket purchased for 1 of our 3 days....did you get this at all?
I just received my orlandocoupons in the mail so will now look for ones to take...sounds like there are some good ones.
Thanks also for the good reference for the car service.

Can't wait for more details....:surfweb:

I've just read your report up to date and enjoyed it quite a bit. Could you provide more information about the dining coupons you used? Thanks.

To OP: Since you're so familiar with the HP books and movies, and you obviously noticed so many of the details in WWOHP, I was wondering what you thought about my DS (9) visiting without having read all the books/seen the movies? He's reading the books now and is on #5. I didn't care for the movie (I only saw the first one, but I read all of the books and loved them!), so I'm insisting that he read the books before he sees the movies... of the movies he has seen, he agrees they were disappointing after having read the books. Anyway, we're going in May 2011, so I doubt he'll finish the books by then with all his schoolwork. So, are there alot of things in WWOHP that he may not know about not having read everything yet? I guess I can let him watch all of the movies before then, but I hate to spoil the reading experience!

Although I have not been yet (will be there in less than 2 weeks), I believe I heard that it mostly concentrates on the 1st 4 books, so your son should be fine if he is on book 5. Regardless, he will probably have a great time. :thumbsup2

Thanks... it occurred to me after I posted that the last two movies were not out yet, so I doubted they could do much with those. I know he will have a blast, sure I will too!

Hi!

sounds like a great trip! I am curious, did you make reservations for breakfast in the 3 broomsticks? If so, how?

I am asking because I don't see breakfast on the website.......

Thanks,

Kathy

3 Broomsticks breakfast is exclusive to Harry Potter package holders and they're the only ones who can make a reservation. However if you happen to be there on a day when its not full, there is a chance that you can eat breakfast there. Some people got lucky and have reported that they were able to do that just by asking the TM or being invited in by the TMs.
