A TINY BIT OF BACKSTORY:

The five years since my DS’s birth have been difficult. We had severe financial difficulties and prior to his first birthday I was diagnosed with a serious illness that required immediate and sometimes uncomfortable or painful treatment.

After a year, I was in standard treatment, my hair had mostly grown back and I was starting to feel normal again. We then realized something was not quite right with our precious little boy. By the time he was three, DS was diagnosed as autistic, in the moderate to severe range. It was a devastating thing for a parent to hear. Yes, he is a perfect specimen physically and we thank god for that, but to lack basic communication skills, the ability to talk, and the frustration you can see he suffers – often expressed in anger – breaks your heart.

He had been in various therapies and now special classes in Kindergarten, but the future is uncertain. We can only help him and I think we are his best teachers. We treat him as normally as we can and celebrate each syllable that he utters and light in his eyes when he “gets it.”

After all we had endured as a family, we needed some magic. DS loves all things Disney, so on June 9, 2005, DH and I decided it was time to take him on a real WDW vacation. He had only been once, Christmas 2003, and that was for one extremely crowded day at MK.

The date was chosen, October 24. It seemed a good choice; out of the heat of summer, low crowds and during the time of year when I, as a 37 year old native Floridian, had never seen a hurricane even threaten to strike. We were booked at CBR. I eventually purchased tickets to MNSSHP for October 27th and lived through hurricanes Katrina and Rita as they moved through our area.

With seven days remaining on our countdown, it was evident that Tropical Storm, soon to be hurricane, Wilma was headed directly for us in South Florida and taking her sweet time to get here, strengthening all the while. We couldn’t leave our pets and home unattended through a storm and although he offered, I was not going to go without DH.

Three days prior to what was to have been our arrival date, I rescheduled our trip for February 5. With the extra time to make payments, we added an additional night and upgraded to AKL. It seemed little consolation at the time.

Wilma arrived on October 24th. She left the lower third of our state without electricity, including us. With no school, no work and no power for an indefinite period of time, DH insisted I take DS to my father’s home where things could be more normal for him. My father happened to live in Orlando.

We drove up on October 25th while DH tended to our darkened home and brood of dogs and cats. DS and I attended MNSSHP with my stepmother since I still had the tickets and we went to AK the next day. I would report more on that, but this is already getting long for pre-story.

We returned home when the power was restored on October 30th. It would be weeks and weeks more before our community returned to anything resembling what it was and the after effects of uprooted trees and torn off roofs still exists today.

After all of that…we finally arrived at February 5, 2006

DAY ONE:

I’m up early, packed and ready to go – but it’s only six AM! :lmao: DH and DS are still asleep and we can’t even drop our dogs off at their “doggie spa” for another four hours. So begins our first day of vacation.

DH wakes at eight, showers and goes to the grocery store for supplies for the trip and food for cats and dogs. Cats are staying at the house with my DM checking in on them. DS wakes a few minutes after DH leaves. “Cough.” Oh, no! “Cough.” Please, no! “Cough.” Yep – he’s got a cold. Add medicine to the already full bags.

DH returns, then leaves again to drop off dogs while I separate booty. When all is said and done, we begin our four hour drive in a straight line north at 12:30, an hour later than I had hoped. :car:

Due to unexpected traffic on 192 :snail: we arrive at AKL just prior to 5:00 PM. Check-in was quick and everyone is Disney friendly. Our room is beautiful and all the way in the back of the lodge.

It’s a bit of a trek, but provides a gorgeous, unobstructed view of the savannah. We spend the remainder of the daylight hours on our balcony looking at animals, including a very cute baby giraffe we saw nursing on its mother and playing right below us.

I managed to get pictures of the room before DS began his destruction. It’s amazing that he only took fleeting glances at the animals and was much more excited to have two beds to jump on. Oh, to be five years old!!

After dark, we explored the hotel as the temperature dropped. The entire process of planning and all the money was worth it just for the hotel. What an amazing place! We ate dinner at The Mara. I had the chicken and couscous, while DH had a Rubin. DS had already had PB&J in the room since he is very particular in his food (one of his autism issues), but enjoyed his fries.

We returned to the room and watched the animals that still were wondering outside. We tried to wind down DS, but it took a while. He finally fell asleep around eleven and we joined him shortly thereafter.

DAY TWO:

DS had us up at five. It was a very chilly morning and no animals in sight. We did get to see incredible fog and a beautiful sunrise.

We had breakfast delivered in our room, something we only allowed ourselves to splurge on once. I wanted to eat on the balcony, but the temperature kept me inside. I am a native Floridian and anything below sixty to me is freezin’.

We headed down to the bus stop at 8:30. DH was going to be doing the Dolphins In Depth tour (his Christmas present from me) and needed to be at Epcot by 9:30. We got on the bus and DS asked “Are we going far?” That’s a huge statement for a child that barely speaks, I could only think the magic was taking hold. :goodvibes

We got to Epcot at 9:00. We wondered a bit and unfortunately Spaceship Earth was down. DS led us into a gift shop where we browsed until it was time for DH to leave us. He headed back out to the front while DS and I went to Character Connection. There was no one else there, so he got to spend some quality time with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Chip and Donald. He LOVED it. I got some nice shots with my camera, but of course I’ve already ordered most of the Photopass pictures.

After that, we headed to The Living Seas. DS loves fish, so it seemed a good place to start. We didn’t do Turtle Talk due to the lines and he really wanted to look at the tank.
IMG_0180.jpg

After an hour, he started to not care about the fish and became a little too rambunctious, running in the circle around the observation deck and knocking into people, so we left. I figured an hour looking at fish would hold him a while.

We went into The Land pavilion. It was only 10:30 or so, but the Fast Passes for Soarin’ were already at 6:15 that evening!!! DH wanted me to get him one to use after his tour, but I knew he had no intention of still being there that late. I had no desire to ride since I’m deathly afraid of heights and DS couldn’t handle it with his issues. We circled around the pavilion and although he liked the balloons in the center, the crowds were unbelievable – so this is where everybody was. :crowded:

DS was unhappy to leave, but I thought I’d make it up to him by going on Journey Into Your Imagination, which was a walk-on. BIG MISTAKE. I remember the old ride, which was fun, charming and family friendly. This was awful. The darkness and loud noises scared DS since he didn’t understand what was going on and even startled me at times. :scared: He came out crying, so now I felt even worse.

I know, I thought, popcorn! DS loves popcorn. We stopped at a cart and got a bucket. That cheered him up. A few pieces fell on the ground as we made our way to a bench and he flipped out that I wouldn’t let him pick it up AND EAT IT! It was, after all, his popcorn. I finally got through to him that it was dirty and he begrudgingly sat down on the bench. A nice couple was sitting there and we were discussing Journey Into Your Imagination and how bad it was and how there should be a warning that it may be too intense for small children.

At that point, the woman said how she was warm and needed to take her jacket off. When she did, she accidentally knocked over DS’s popcorn sending half of it on the ground. HE HAD A COMPLETE MELTDOWN and was insisting I pick it up. The woman apologized profusely and I kept saying it would be okay, he was autistic and it was difficult for him to understand I wasn’t being mean by not letting him eat the popcorn that was now on the ground, but DS was in full blown tantrum now.

I knew it was time to leave. He did have a cold and that couldn’t have been helping. We took the remainder of his popcorn and headed out to the bus. He calmed down by the time we got to the hotel and put on his movie, which was comforting and familiar and I tried to breathe again as he ate a PB&J. I even managed to get more photos of the baby giraffe.

DH called at 12:30 to say he was done and was on his way back to the hotel. We agreed to go to AK that afternoon and see how that went. DS had been to AK once before in October and loved it. He remembered where we were when we got to the gate and excitedly ran up to see Chip and Dale. He stumbled on his own feet and fell on the way. Chip and Dale made a big deal out of it which was hysterical.
IMG_0188.jpg

Really, it was just a little scratch and he continued to have fun with Chip and Dale.

We went inside and slowly made our way to Africa and KS. I got Fast Passes, which gave us an hour, so DH and I got lunch at Tusker House, which was fantastic and I think some of the best food we had on the whole trip. It was then time for KS but for some reason, they combined the regular line with the Fast Pass line as soon as the two met and our wait still ended up being almost an hour, with DS getting more and more impatient. :sad2: I had heard that even with a Guest Assistance Card, you still had to use Fast Pass when you could, so I was hoping not to need one, I would learn different later.

By the time we got on a truck, DS was in meltdown again. He calmed down on the truck, but soon fell asleep on DH’s lap. Oh, well. :confused3 Our driver was horrible, not speaking above a mumble and it made me long for when DS and I went in October and our driver was so wonderful you bought the whole story. DH didn’t care, he was more interested in the animals anyway and for a treat the male lion was actually awake!!

Since DS was groggy after KS, DH decided to take him back to the hotel. I had missed the Jammin’ Jungle Parade in October and really wanted to see it, so DH insisted I stay to see the parade, which was less than a half hour away, so I did. I think it was a really fun parade. :thumbsup2

I went back to the hotel and DS was asleep. My father and stepmother were coming to the hotel to meet us at 7:00, but DS was in no condition with his cold and sleepiness. I went down to meet them and had a nice hour or so visit while we sat in the lounge and had a drink. After they departed, I got food for everyone from The Mara and headed upstairs.

Our first real day hadn’t been great, but there had been highlights. DS loved Living Seas and meeting the characters at Character Connection. He also enjoyed AK, but I think his cold and just being five caught up to him. DH really enjoyed his dolphin experience and even got a picture to prove he was there. All in all, it wasn’t as bad as it sounds.
