Just back from week long family group of 16 (week after Easter). This is our experience. Hopefully it may help others with future trips.
Several of us had watched the vloggers, read the tips for using Genie, and made sure we were familiar with app. We did not like it and it was not a great way to start a Disney day at 7:00. Our approach was for 4 of us to meet at 7:00 each morning, we divided the group in half with two taking one half and the other taking the other half. Our group was trying to spend parts of each morning together, have lunch together as a group (lunch together worked great), and then go our separate ways. We were hoping the two groups could get overlapping lightning lanes at two attractions each morning (one with Genie+ and one with ILL)--but with constantly changing return times as we would use the app between 7:00 and 7:20, it simply didn't happen most days. So I would recommend not using this approach.

A couple of comments:
1. The return time for ILL attractions changed every single time AFTER we purchased the ILL. Whether we purchased a few minutes after 7:00 (the app usually errored at 7:00) or purchased at the later 7:11 drop, the return time would change as much as several hours. Disney guest relations said they could correct it but it would bog the whole system down. This was the most frustrating part of using Genie+ and resulted in several blue umbrella visits.
2. The app will give you a warning that you cannot have more than 10 people in your Genie party. We thought it was up to 12 but learned that our first day of trying to use the app.
3. I could only book a lightning lane if I was included in the group.
4. We all agreed that we needed to purchase Genie+ to enjoy the parks; standby lines were too long except early in the morning and even then the most popular rides got long quickly.
5. Rides, especially ILL rides, were constantly breaking down and made using Genie+ frustrating. Our first 3 days, all 3 ILL rides we bought that day broke down for our return times, forcing us to re-arrange our day. 7 Dwards, Remy, ROTR
6. Genie would randomly drop people from our groups (we would select members of our group and the two rides we wanted to start with prior to 7:00 each morning). We never could figure out why or how that happened, which made riding together with overlapping groups impossible when that happened.

Only one member (a young adult) like Genie. She treated it like a video game with a challenge of getting attractions she or someone wanted throughout the day.
The rest of us found Genie frustrating and took away some of the joy/fun of the trip. However, it is necessary to ride most of the attractions. We purchased 5 of the 7 days of our trip.

My advice (take it or leave it): Don't try to have a large group ride any ride together if it's a Genie+ or ILL ride.

Wow, that's frustrating. We will probably get this for our next trip and we always go in a large group. But sooo NOT looking forward to the added time planning and complexity of this new system. Thanks for sharing, OP.

Thank you for the feedback. We (Group of 9) start our trip in 35 days and I am not looking forward to having to wake up early everyday for the daily 7am Genie+ And ILL bookings. I’m nervous having to do it with the 9 people in my group. I’m the only planner in my group. Trying to give my sister in law a crash course in Disney planning so at least 2 of us can do the early morning bookings. You are super hero planners with managing 16! Glad you had 4 knowledgeable people to break up the group into 2. It’s sucks that the time changes so much that you couldn’t get times for the 2 groups close together..

Great feedback, thanks.

This seems to pose a strange dilemma.
1) You can't book LL for more than 10 people.
2) In order to book an LL, you must include yourself in the group.

Which means that for a group larger than 10, there's no way that one person can do the bookings. The group has to be split, and there has to be more than one person doing the bookings.

Ugh.

Ugh is right.

I was able to book G+ LL and ILLs for group sizes of 11 and 12 a few weeks ago.

It seems to me that most of those problems would apply to anything over one person. So now WDW has a system that discourages larger groups. Talk about pennywise and pound-foolish.

This is going to be a huge problem for our family trip in July. We will have 13 who will all want to ride together :/

If only they went the route of every other park out there. Ditch the return times, quadruple the price and limit availability. It would have much more magical.

Off topic a bit. Til I came to this site I have never heard of people traveling with such large groups.

It's been awhile now but in 2008 I took (financially) my entire immediate family the included my daughters, their husbands and children and my sister and nephew to WDW. (11 total) Since I am not now nor ever have been a millionaire staying onsite wasn't possible. Partially due to cost and partially but mostly due to the fact that nothing was even possible to keep everyone together.

I rented a 6 bedroom offsite villa, fully equipt with everything including a game room, full sized private pool and jacuzzi within a huge Florida Room, 7 day non-expiring admissions for for all, airfare round trip from Vt for all, Two rental cars, plus my own because I drove down and they followed.

We stayed in the area for a week, and went to other places like the Kennedy Space Center and left with everyone still having three days on their tickets to use when they wanted. Total cost to me was $7000.00. A lot of money even then but compared to today, it was parking meter change.

I'm not going to bother doing the math for comparison, but I can tell you that we had a blast not only being there but the planning parties we had at home getting organized was fun too. What we had that worked was flexibility. We went to whatever park we wanted on whatever day we wanted (usually decided the night before), didn't need reservations to eat because except for quick service for lunch in the parks, it was all done either in the villa or to the hundreds of restaurant choices offsite. It just cannot be duplicated today. With todays system it would take a team of engineers and at least a couple of people that could forecast the future to make it work. It is so sad to lose that ability, but I guess that it doesn't bother Disney because it was only a small piece of that 7 grand that went to Disney the rest was spent in the local economy. So if Disney can't get it all, they apparently don't want any of it.

We are going to be a group of 7, but plan on splitting into two groups of 4 and 3 just so it's easier to get LL. If we overlap great, if not, so be it.

Did you try rope drop with your group and/or standby lines in general?

I'm traveling with a group of 20 next March for my Mom's 60th Birthday, and my thought is to "force" everyone to make rope drop one day for one ride, then split up for everything else. I know my Mom will want at least one ride together, but our group will be age 61 down to age 3 with varying levels of interest in attractions. I'll put together some sample plans for people, but mostly expect everyone to move around with either their nuclear family or their interest group.
I'm thinking we'll probably do Kilimanjaro Safaris together, since it doesn't have a height restriction and the cars are large enough for all of us to fit in one. It's also interesting enough for all the interest levels.....probably.

We did try to rope drop with everybody the first full day at MK but Space Mountain didn’t open for resort guests that day, so our plans fell apart for the group pretty quickly. We did all manage to get overlapping LL for Jungle Cruise that morning so we could ride together. The next morning Remy was down in the morning and then the next day multiple rides were down at HS in the morning. So we gave up rope dropping and decided to sleep an extra hour😊.

And yes, we did some standby lines and shows together. We also did some quick service meals together. Though our table service meals were the best times we spent together as a group in the parks.

Our original March 2020 trip had the same 16 people, but we were able to reserve several fast pass rides together per day 60 days in advance, and so we had several rides every day that we had scheduled together. It’s just really tough to plan for groups larger than 10 with the new system. And the rides breaking down add to the challenge.
Again, we had a fun week! Despite Genie+ and rides breaking down often.

2. The app will give you a warning that you cannot have more than 10 people in your Genie party. We thought it was up to 12 but learned that our first day of trying to use the app.
Oh no! It was definitely 12 when I started researching our fall trip. They must have changed this recently, but I don’t see any info about the change posted to the Disney site. This will mean breaking up our group into 2 parties. 🙁

It was 12 before our April trip also. At least that is what I thought. I had seen somewhere that there were reports of occasional glitches when doing more than 10, but I was very surprised to get the message on the app that I couldn’t have more than 10 in my group. So for the week of April 16, the app wouldn’t let us put more than 10 in a group for genie+.
