We just got home from a 3 week trip to magical Hawaii!

One week was spent in Princeville, Kauai at a timeshare exchange arranged by our friends from RCI. The second week was spent at Kona Coast II resort on the Big Island of Hawaii through an exchange we did through DVC (160 points).

Both resorts were well located, but the DVC trade resort was much nicer in the room amenities. The RCI resort had much lower quality materials in the room and building itself. By this I mean, linolium floors instead of quarry or ceramic tile, lesser appliances, smaller and poorly appointed bathrooms, etc.... The Kona Coast Resort had nicer furnishings and nice tile floors etc, but the kitchen wasn't very well stocked for cooking utensils. Neither resort was on a beach, but both had golf courses. We did take the tour at both resorts. The Princeville one had 3 resorts in their group. They were stricktly RCI and you would have to pay an additional $2600 to be in the RCI point system. They had an older unit for sale, but we didn't care for the older building at all. The time had definately taken a toll on these lower quality building materials. The Kona Coast Resort is part of the Shell Vacation Club system. They use a point system very much like ours at DVC, but with a greater number of points. They trade through both RCI and II. They have (hope this is right) at least 8 Hawaii properties, and all reserve as your home resort in a 11-13 month window. The Kona Coast was older than the Princeville one, but was in much better condition because of the better materials. It really made me understand why DVC only trades out directly to specific resorts!!! I am sure it is so we can be guaranteed the quality we have come to expect at Disney.

All in all, I would consider another trade a few years down the road. I really like going to WDW, and this trade was few enough points that we were able to do both WDW and Hawaii the same year. If I ever do it again, I will do 2 weeks of DVC trade instead of 1. We got the 2 weeks this time by traveling with our RCI friends.

Diane- I was looking forward to your post for your Hawaii exchange trip. Glad the Kona Coast II was nice. We will have to add that to our list of potential trades.

Welcome back!

Glad to hear everything went well. I was looking forward to your report on your bargain exchange!

Diane,

Thanks for the report, we plan on going there in 2 years;) .....and use our Frequent Flyer miles also:D
Did you use FF miles or pay for the airfare?

Which resort on Kauai?

hi Diane: glad you had a good time. i am very interested in what you think about this trade. it makes me feel a bit more trusting regarding a trade out. thanks for the info.

I'd encourage those thinking of exchanging to check out the resort they are looking to exchange into. Don't just accept an exchange because it's on the DVC list. As an example, there was just a recent post about an unacceptable exchange through DVC.

Ncligs,
Yes, we used FF miles for first class air travel. I knew from other Hawaii trips that I was NOT going coach again for that distance!!

Dean the Princeville RCI exchange was the Bali Hai. We looked at a unit in their older resort (Keo Kai), but didn't like it. The only one we would have considered there was The Shearwater, and they were quite pricey.

Thanks for the info Diane, we plan on going 1st class for that distance also;) .

As per Dean's suggestion, Check out any resort on TUG before you agree to an exchange. We did that with both our DVC exchange and also our friend's RCI exchange.

Thanks for the info. I'm not considering an exchange yet but will definitely heed the advice to "check the place out" first before I do so. Excellent advice.

If you are planning a trip in 2 years, I would reccomend you get your request in now. We requested any island, any resort any time between 1/1/02 and 6/1/02. We got the last week of April and our friends then requested a week on either side. It didn't all work out until after January with their trade, but it went very well.

We stayed at the Kona Coast last May. We were in Phase I and enjoyed our stay. The unit was large, but older than the DVC units we have been in. Our view was wonderful. All in all it was very comfortable. We used a family members timeshare for this exchange, since they used our DVC the previous year.

We had a list of several islands, resorts, and times. I agree with Diane about getting your request in early.

Sounds like you had a great trip Diane. Three weeks...wow, I am jealous.

Welcome Back.
