Our Dog (s) Just ate an entire bag of Peanut Butter M & Ms!

lisajl has it correct - baking chocolate is the worst for dogs. No two dogs will react the same - it could range from mild seizures to coma. Milk chocolate will only cause (most) dogs to have an upset stomach.

It seems like the pug ate the most candy or at least is affected the most. Now that the vomitting has calmed down, the other end is starting up. She's sitting looking longingly at the water bowl - I keep telling her it's her own fault! She eats snow as soon as she goes outside. She'll be in her kennel for the night.

Last Christmas the cats knocked a platter of sugar cookies off the table and she pigged out. It took her a few days to recover from that episode. We work very hard to keep her weight down, so she'll be dieting for the next few weeks. Her sister (owned by friends) weighs 10 pounds more than she does. DH is adamant about keeping her weight at a healthy level. Pugs will eat everything!!

Wondering why you cant give her any water, that seems so cruel ?

Our golden is notorious for eating everything and anything. She's ate so much chocolate and stuff the vet know our number on call display.

We got the same info as already posted, regular chocolate is not as dangerous as baking chocolate, due to the content of cocoa in the chocolate. So a dog eating a whole chcolate cake vs a box of baking chocolate is different. The vet said that is depends also on the dogs weight. Now that's not to say your doggie won't feel yucky and have some poopy pants but it won't be fatal. Our vet also said no food for like 24 hours and then start with rice and then rice and beef before dog food again.

Geesh you gotta wonder what does on in their brains...

You just need to let the stomach calm down a bit before you add more to it. Once the vomitting has ended for a few hours, she'll get an ice cube to lick at, then maybe a small amount of water before we go to bed. If we let her drink, she'll keep throwing it up. I'm sure she'd even eat her dinner if we offered it to her.

Think about when you have the stomach flu - would you immediately drink a large glass of (any beverage) and eat a ham sandwich? Dogs don't know any better so we need to make the decision for them.

DH has been a vet for over 22 years and I've heard him counsel many clients this same way. Yes, it does feel a bit cruel, but considering I've been cleaning up after her since 1:00 today, I'm ready for it to stop. Hopefully she'll be feeling better in the AM.

I seriously didn't know that you couldn't give a dog water if its stomach was upset, I wasn't saying you were cruel, I was saying the act of not giving a sick dog water sounded cruel, see I did not know that water would make a dog sicker. I saw the part in your first post where you said your dh was a vet that's why I questioned it to just see why for future reference. No offence just curious.

Sorry your pug is feeling blue =( It's strange how they are SO attracted to something that is SO bad for them.

We are overly cautious and don't wrap up and leave any chocolate (or any edible anything!) under the tree just in case. They can sniff it out a mile away and rip into it while I'm not watching.

We don't even put stuff in stockings, since they could pull it off if they wanted to. Better to be safe than sorry!

Well, I'm happy to report that Shabadoo (the pug) is feeling better this morning. She slept in her kennel last night without incident and even had a small amount of food which has stayed down.

terri01p - no offense taken at all. I was just explaining what DH says to his clients. Because of hearing that for so many years, I knew to take away the water.

We'll be extra cautious in the future - the pets seem to figure out how to get into things that we think have been put out of their reach!

I keep telling DH he should write a book about all of his experiences and one (maybe two) chapters could be devoted to items removed from dog's stomachs. My favorite is one that he could see something on an x-ray but couldn't tell what it was. As he began removing it during surgery he noticed lace and elastic straps. The poor owner was mortified when DH told her he removed her bra from her dog's stomach - the bra was still pretty much in one piece.

Another chapter could be funny things clients say (anonymous of course). One client kept repeating over and over "Doc, my dog, she's just so nostalgic lately". DH finally realized he meant lethargic, not nostalgic! It was all he could do to keep from laughing during the office visit. Too funny!

Glad she's feeling better! Pugs are awesome little dogs. If you ever feel up to the drive PRoNE has a pug social near Worcester in the fall. It's quite comical to be in one place with hundreds of pugs about!

You'll have to get this book for your husband- http://www.amazon.com/Country-Practice-Scenes-Veterinary-Life/dp/0865476470/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198159763&sr=8-12 I used to be a client of Dr. Shaws, but when someone loaned me the book I had no idea it was about him. I loved Dr Shaw and wish we still lived close enough to see him.

Many Years ago we had a Golden Retriever who was about 100 lbs. Well one day for the Holiday's we put out a 1 lb bag of Hersey's Kisses. The next day the entire candy dish was empty. Thought the kids ate them. A few days later while doing Poop Patrol, I discovered our original assumption was wrong. There sparkling in the Sunlight was several large loads peppered with Silver, Red and Green Foil. Seems the dog ate the Hershey Kisses but didn't bother to unwrap them. What was really upsetting was that one of the loads had the little Hershey paper strip sticking out of it. To this day, I can't buy or thinking about eating a Hershey's Kiss.
