Me: DIsney addict, made that way by my mother!
DF: My fiancee, who also loves Disney and pretends to be as addicted as me, though his feet are slightly more on the ground.
February 11th-13th
February 11th was the looooooongest work day Ive ever had, partly because the hospital was crazy busy( just like it had been for the past 3 months). I always remember the week before we take our annual vacation for our anniversary exactly WHY I vacation in February. Winter is by far the most hectic season for a hospital and by the time it is time for me to have a break I am SOOOO ready. The other reason it was long of course was because I knew we'd be heading off to Disney the next day!!!
My workday done, I headed downstairs to my mom's desk (we work in the same building..Im a nurse and she is a program support clerk for the VA medical center in Wilmington, Delaware) and sat down next to her while she wrapped up her day. We are very close and since I would be gone all week, I was going to follow her home and spend the evening with her and my father.
I stayed until about 10pm and then said my goodbyes and set up plans with my mom for lunch the next day to celebrate her birthday since I wouldnt be home to celebrate it with her. I arrived home about 1030pm and was just in time to see my fiancee pull in from work (works for a banking call center, WEIRD hours). We went inside, and set to work getting all of the last minute details taken care of. We carried all of our luggage, with the exception of the toiletries we'd need the next morning to get ready, downstairs to make loading his jeep easier when it came time to set out on our trip to Dis. We were both in bed by midnight, but finding it IMPOSSIBLE to sleep because of our excitement. Sometime during the night we fell asleep, im just not sure when.
I woke the next morning to a kiss on my forehead as my fiancee headed out for his last half day of work before our departure. He gave me my instructions...keep my cell on me so he could keep in contact with last minute details that may arrise and so that he could call the moment he got out of work (he wasnt sure how he'd manage to keep his cool all day knowing Disney was just around the corner).
I got up a few moments later, showered, called my mom, and upon the arrival of her and my cousin Joey, went for lunch at Fridays. We tried those new combos which I can highly recommend and Im not even that huge a fan of Fridays (but it was for her Bday lunch and she picked the place!). We all hung out and talked and laughed and had a really great time. By the time we had eaten (lunch took about 2 1/2 hours, I think our waiter was new) it was time to head home. We arrived about 10 minute before Beau (my fiancee) and got the puppy ready for his week-long stay at his mommoms house.
We loaded the car, said our goodbyes to my mom and Joey and we were off ahead of schedule (6pm) for our 15 hours drive to Disney. Now at this point those of you who fly are probably shaking your heads at the crazy Delawarians who drive to Disney, but we enjoy it. We like to leave in the evenings when traffic is dying down and always nonexistant by 11pm until 5am. We take turns driving and sleeping and normally take a 2-3 hour nap upon arrival. Sometimes we do stay overnight in South Carolina or Georgia, but normally we find that we can easily complete the drive in one stretch. My tips for a drive to Disney would be to bring plenty of sodas in a cooler to keep refreshed, stop every 2 hours or so to stretch your legs, and make stops for breakfast at a place like Cracker Barrel where you can relax for an hour and have a nice homestyle meal to keep you fueled. Also, a tip that we've been using our last few long road trips is books on tape or CD. They are usually 5-6 hours long and we pop them in when we are getting weary and find that we are back in the game.
Ill spare details of the drive which was uneventful except our shock at how much more we spent on gas this time around!
We arrived at Sheraton Studio City on international drive around 11am and to our delight they allowed us to check in early. The room was very nice with two queen sized sweet sleeper beds decked out with 5 huge pillows apiece and soft sheets and a comfy duvet. This was definitely the best sleep either of us has gotten on vacation! The location was only about a mile away from I-4 access so this hotel at its Priceline.com rate of 41 dollars a night was definitely a winner! It felt very posh and (sorry parents) we enjoyed the lack of screaming children in commom areas. Id definitely recommend this hotel to singles or couples looking for a romantic venue.
We slept for a few hours then woke up and took NEEDED hot showers. I watched the Disney visitors channels which I admit I am addicted to (by the second day of vacation, DF was saying "THIS again??") and we familiarized ourselves with the hotel ammenities, including 24 hour pizza delivery service which wasnt priced too bad and was actually tasty.
We rounded our day out with a trip to Capones dinner show on Irlo Bronson. It came to just over 40 bucks for two of us and included decent italian-american cuisine and a steady pour of whatever type of drink you preferred (soda, tea, sangria, beer, or rum runners). The show was a little corny like dinner shows normally are, but we really got into it and had a great time.
Anyhow, more to come....because the next day, February 14th was DISNEY TIME, BABY!!!!
