Ouch! I think I broke some bones in my foot

Well, it's not good news. I broke my fifth metatarsal in 3 places. He said it was a very bad break, and he wants me to see a podiatrist on Monday. He seemed to think it might require surgery. I hope he's wrong.

As an added bonus, he told me that because it broke so easily and so badly, it probably means I'm going to have problems with osteoporosis. Now I'm really depresssed.:sad1:

I am so sorry.....I had my surgery 10 days ago...they told me I have a high tolerance for pain...I am thinking you do too.

UGH! I feel for you. In June of last year, I experienced a Jones fracture on the 5th metatarsal. The podiatrist pushed surgery right away, as the fifth metatarsal doesn't get a lot of bloodflow, so it's tough to heal, but I found an orthopedist who specializes in feet and ankles.

He and I agreed on a very conservative approach (an aircast boot with an insert) for 4 months. It healed beautifully and best of all, no surgery.

Mine was 1 fracture, so it may be appreciably different, but I remember how freaked out I was about the prospect for surgery on my foot, and it sucks. Keep your chin up--and don't walk!

That is bad. I broke my ankle in 4 places. Pretty much I'm now on a wait mode for arthritis in my foot. Dr. that was a foregone conclusion due to the break.

You should have your Dr. give you a bone density test to see just how close you are to having it. better to be pro-active i think. Good luck with the podiatrist

Yeah, he told me I needed a bone density test. He put me on 1500 mg of calcium plus vitamin D. I'm only 38, so I was shocked to hear this news today. I don't know what upset me more, the news about my foot or that I'll probably have osteoporosis. I've never broken a bone and been relatively healthy all my life. Now it's like I'm starting to fall apart!

Yikes! if it makes you feel any better, I also walked around for a few days when I broke my foot. It didn't help anything, though.:upsidedow Hope you don't need surgery but it wouldn't surprise me if you do. Three breaks will be hard to heal in alignment and you don't want to take chances with your feet. You only get two of them.

Oh, Ms YT, sorry to hear about your foot. Hope things go good on monday and you get some good news.

I broke a bone in my foot last spring. I had surgery and was in a cast for 2 mos. It was a rough time, but you'll get through it. My broken bone was a little higher than yours. After surgery, the dr. said it was worse than she thought b/c a chip of the bone had flipped over. W/o surgery, I would have walked with a limp for the rest of my life. I'm 39. I hope you don't have surgery, but in the long run it may help you. You heal faster with surgery too.
You may want to rent a knee scooter for people with a broken foot. I can't think of the name of it, but I couldn't have made it through w/o it. You rest your knee on it and push with your other foot.

Went to the podiatrist today, and got good news. He seems to think I won't need surgery. I've got an aircast, and I have to go back in 2 weeks to make sure it's healing. He was very nice, and listened to me without rushing me. As an added bonus, I got right in and was on my way back to school within an hour. The only bad part was when I had to lift up my pants leg to get fitted for the cast, showing the guy my leg that I hadn't shaved for 2 weeks!

that's awesome!!!

Going out for me lately has been a joy....only skirts and dresses and with a lovely forest of hair on the "good" leg....I am getting ready to braid it.:rotfl:

Hope it heals soon and that no surgery is required...

That is good news. Hope you recover quickly.
When I had my hard cast, I didn't shave for 8 weeks! I had the cast taken off once, and the nurse said not to shave because it would itch growing back. An itching foot/leg in a cast will drive you crazy!
