OTUP Hypothetical

This is a hypothetical I was thinking about and wanted to see if anyone had a solid answer for it...

I own a mixture of resale and direct points. Let's say I wanted to make a reservation at a restricted resort for 50pts, but I only have 45 direct points available to complete the reservation. Would I be able to purchase 5 OTUP points even if I had some resale points that hadn't been used yet? I always think of OTUP as something you can only use if you're all of out of pts for a 7 month reservation, so just trying to see if they can be purchased even if you still have points in your account (just points that can't be used on that direct reservation though). I would think it would be ok for member service to give the go-ahead to purchase them, but just wanted to see if anyone knew for sure. Thanks!

Yes. You do not need to use your own points in order to buy them.

The only rule is that you are booking 7 months or less.

Yeah I agree you dont need to have used all of your own points when getting the OTUP.

Furthermore, if you wish to save some of your own points you can get up to the 24 otup and use those instead in a 7 months reservation.

Add to that you can even make the 7 month reservation(if you have enough points) and then buy the OTUP (most likely you need a dummy reservations for that) and then after buying them you can cancel the dummy, and swap the points into the 7 month reservation and freeing up your own points.
