I have this neighbor with whom there’s been some tension between us in the past, long story short but last time I left a voicemail I heard nothing back from her, either she was mad and just rude or never got the message…it’s been months and I had not bother to find out.
Our kids do play together and yesterday her son came after school looking for my son to play , they go out and came back about 20min later (with another boy) to ask and beg for my son go with them to a restaurant for dinner to celebrate the boy’s birthday. Said ok, said happy birthday to the boy (had no clue it his birthday until then) and did not get to see either parent to thank them.
I really do not want to call the mom to “Thank her” and thinking about sending a short email instead but not sure if that would be rude on my part?

I think the email would be fine. Or send a Thank You note from your son to thank them for inviting him.

I always tell my children, "it never hurts to be nice" and "we don't base our behavior on the behavior of others, we do what we know in our hearts is right". You have to do what you will feel comfortable with, but don't let her control your reaction. If you let her previous actions determine how you respond, you are giving her control over you. If the previous tiff didn't exist, how would you respond? That is what I would do.

Sorry.I would call and thank her personally. She made a nice gesture and invited your child out to dine with her family. That warrants a phone call regardless of how you feel. Email has become too acceptable and it shouldn't. It is very impersonal.jmho

I'd go with a note from your son. It is he who had the benefit for the dinner out, so he is the one to say thank you for it. I started teaching my kids to send thank you notes for themselves at about age 5. At that point I'd dictate and they would write them, but now, a couple of years later I have them decide what to write and I just help with spelling.
