What would you like people to know about children/people with Autism or Asperger's?

My exceptional child class is getting ready to study Autism next week, and I'd love to share with them anything you are willing to share with me.

As a side note, I have Asperger's and Central Auditory Processing Disorder but none of my classmates know this. I'm still debating if I will tell them.

Thanks for all your help!

That Autism is a natural evolutionary genetic variation.
That Autism is not a disease of affliction.
That it comes with many gifts, and the largest portion of the challenges come from the discriminatory nature of existing in an environment and social structure that was developed and adapted for a completely different set of neurological priorities and preferences.
That most of "creative " advances throughout our civilization have come from individual with Autism genetics.

They need to know that there social skills are not like everyone elses. When my son tries to touch you it is because he likes you, not to annoy you. Most children do not understand that.

He also has very limited speech and is hard to understand so most childen do not want to try and communicate with him. Tell them not to avoid people because they are different. If he wants to talk to you he will find a way to communicate.

That most people with autism really want to have and be a friend. It's just tricky for them.
