Hey guys. My baby now is 14 months, and loves organic maple and spice oatmeal and any flavor cereal bars. I love that she likes the oatmeal, but I really dont know about the cereal bars. My oldest daughter was off baby food at 6 months ( could not keep her full on baby food ) but loved her Gerber Cin apple rice cereal (in the jar ) that is all she would touch. The baby however, will eat anything, but cries for her mel mel ( oatmeal ) or her bite bite ( cereal bar ) somedays the bars is all she wants. Is the fruit in the bars have more sugar than the baby food jar cereals? My concern is for her teeth. I am so OCD when it comes to my kids teeth. My six year old has perfect teeth, and I can have my baby get cavities from her bite bite:eek:

Thanks

She eats whatever we eat. Mostly cut up bits of ham, buttered biscuits, toast and jam, or fruit, especially bananas, grapes or berries (cut-up, of course.)

My 15 month old usually eats oatmeal, waffles, eggs & toast or cereal (fruit loops or cocoa puffs). Of course in the morning we only give him milk to drink (he gets juice later in the day). If we think he is eating too much sugar we just make sure we give him milk or water to drink with it and then brush his teeth afterwards. I think as long as that is not all that she eats all day long her teeth will be fine.

We give our children very little added sugar, especially at that age, but that's just our preference. Both of my children eat fresh fruit and cereal for breakfast. (So do I, actually. DH eats a cereal bar in the car.) DD10 months eats her Cheerios or Chex with her fingers; DD3 in a bowl with milk. Most of the time their breakfast fruit is bananas, but sometimes other things that are in season.

But if your only concern is her teeth, just brush them after breakfast, or wash them with a washcloth. :)

Ditto others, that she just has what we have for breakfast. We do whole wheat waffles with applesauce (I make it, no added sugar), whole wheat bagels with cream cheese, oat muffins, raisin bran, cheerios, eggs and toast, oatmeal, cream of wheat, yogurt, etc. She has some of that and at least one fruit (whatever we have available). We do the Trader Joes cereal bars occasionally if we're doing a breakfast-on-the-go or something, but I'm also not a big fan of the cane juice in them so we limit them (like any other sweet or treat). I actually love that DD eats what I do because I offer her way more fruits and veggies than I used to eat so my own diet has significantly improved.:wizard:

My dd4 ate whatever we ate at that age and she loved oatmeal and the infant cereal too. (Fruit, dry cereal, breads, pancakes/waffles) I agree with other pp's. Brush teeth afterwards and I think she will be fine. My dentist told me I could dip the toothbrush into an anticavity rinse and rub over teeth.(just a tiny dip with the tip of the brush so the little one does not swallow too much of the fluoride.) Maybe you can ask your dentist if you can do the same.

My 15 month old really needs yogurt daily. So usually her breakfast is yogurt and some dry cereal like cheerios and some fruit, usually bananas. But she also has oatmeal, pancakes, eggs,waffles... Really whatever we're eating!

My 16 month old DS has a rotation of breakfast foods, its his fav meal of the day. He still doesn't love fruit (texture) so I mix in babyfruit with his regular oatmeal. He eats Nutragrain waffles, Pancakes, Yogurt, Bananas. I think thats it! I would just brush her teeth after breakfast if you are concerned.

At that age DD now 5 used to eat waffles, pancakes, toast (all whole wheat) yogurt,4 oz watered down juice, oatmeal, fruits, cheerios w/milk. Her breakfast choices haven't changed much even now..although it now includes whole wheat bagels w/low fat cream cheese.

I pre-make a bunch of breakfast foods and keep them in the freezer. Then my kids can choose what they want and I can just take out a single-serving amount. It's much cheaper and healthier than the pre-packaged breakfast items and doesn't take much time. I make different kinds of muffins and always have pancakes on hand (I make them with pumpkin, flax seed, and spices so they are healthier and the kids don't use butter or syrup usually. I make a huge batch when we have pancakes and stack all the extras in freezer bags. They usually last about 2 weeks.) My kids have also been big yogurt eaters and usually have some with their breakfast.

My 14 DD Loves French toast. I use whole wheat toast a dash of cinnamon and one egg per slice of bread. She gobbles is up. Sometimes she'll eat 3 slices. Oh and just wanted to add I never use syrup.

DS is 15 months. He eats whatever we eat with some exceptions: We like spicy food and I don't think he would enjoy eating it so I keep a few extra jars of baby food around. For breakfast he usually eats oatmeal and fruit like strawberries. He likes cold cereal too but it is usually just bites off ours.
He rarely eats anything with a ton of sugar. Only problem is my mom thinks that its ok and gives my kids tons of junk when my back is turned! She doesn't listen to me when I say don't give it to them so I gave up on saying it. We don't go there often so it is a rare treat when they are at her house.
The only other thing I always give him is the baby food veggies. He will not eat vegetables unless they are pureed! I hope he grows out of that when his molars are all the way through! I am sure its just that the texture is different and he can't chew them that well.
I used to give my older son the cereal bars. That is all he would eat! I didn't worry about the sugar too much as we are very anal about clean teeth here. I always brushed them after breakfast. They do have low sugar cereal bars that you can try and I think the Gerber Graduates ones are already low sugar.:cutie:

I have another related question, not trying to hijack the thread at all. I am OCD about choking and proably mush and break food up more than I need to. At 15 months did you still do those things for your baby?

In my defense he is a food holder, in his cheeks.

Tracy

my dd is 15 months and eats everything we do. no i dont mush anything, she can handle small pieces of meat.

if your child genetically got strong teeth then no, you arent ruining her forever giving her a little sugar every now and then.
some kids just have weaker teeth and no matter what you do its not going to matter.

It depends on who's feeding.

DH normally gives DS eggs, pancakes w/ lots of syrup and juice and fruit (cut up grapes, strawberries, banannas, oranges, apple, etc.)

I normally feed DS eggs, toast (plain), plain yogurt, fruit, and milk.

The short answer is DS does not get any special meals or special food. He eats what we eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We do not mush anything for DS. Per our Ped. - if it's hard, it's cut into pea size bits, if it's soft, then larger bits. Toast we'll cut into strips and DS likes to hold and bit off. The eggs are scrambled, so are normally cooked into nice size chunks. We do cut his fruit into pieces, but if it's watermelon, he really enjoys biting into that himself. It's also good for them to learn to use a fork and spoon, so DS will fork his own eggs and spoon his own yogurt (yes, it does make a mess at first, but he is getting pretty good at it).

DD liked (and still likes) waffles (no syrup/butter) and nutri-grain bars. If you got to a healthy store you can find better for you bars. She's allergic to apples, and all the healthy bars had apples in them, but it should work for you!

Really the big chocking hazard is anything round/coin shaped. So hot dogs and grapes should always be cut length-wise. I do still cut up things for my 16 m.o. quite a bit, but if she can chew it (even when she only had 4 teeth) she gets it. I've never had the chipmunk cheeks though! :rotfl:

The first kid would only eat certain things, the second kid would try things and then eat only little amounts, my third eats anything and everything that she can put in her mouth.

My 18 month old loves string cheese and a banana in the AM. Works for me!
