Our family loves Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin...
It is so sad that he died today during a taping of a show. He was pierced by a poisonous stingray. He contributed so much to the education of wildlife (in a wild kind of way!) We will miss him! Our prayers are with his loved ones.

I couldnt believe it when I heard about it either. Talk about a freak accident. Its not the poison that killed him. Death from stingrays is very rare. In this case, he was swimming over the top of it, got too close and the barb punctured his chest and went into his heart of all places. Most times people step on them and get the barb in the foot. It hurts like heck. He will be missed by this family.

I couldn't believe it when I read about it. What an absoulute freak accident. My DD cried when we told her :guilty: . We just loved him, especially her...she would catch the snakes in our garden to reloccate in the typical crocodile hunter fashion.
My prayers will be with his family. I hope that all his hard work in educating the world about animals and the environment will not be forgotten.

That is so sad.. I couldn't believe it when I read that this morning :(

I'm very sad about this too. What an unfortunate freak accident. I always figured it would be a crocodile or a poisonous snake that would do him in. I feel terrible for his wife and children. At least he died doing something he loved.

Yeah we were shocked too. Saw something on the news about an interview with him from 2004 being showed tonight and DH was curious as to why and found out he had died. He was great to watch and will be greatly missed. My thoughts go out to his wife and young kids and all the wonderful people he worked with!

I am in complete shock...I can't believe it. I feel like I just found out a friend was killed. I knew his wife Terri. She had done several programs in my school when I was young, before she moved to Australia. I am in absolute shock. God be with his family.

Very sad! My heart goes out to his family. I always shook my head in disbelief and amazement at him, but he was fascinating and fearless. Godspeed Steve!

So, so sad. :sad1:
Our family as well loved him, we were always entertained and educated by his shows, he will be missed.

My kids really like him too. They were very sad about his death. His show was one of the few that you could sit down as a family and watch together. Very sad...he left such young kids too :sad1:

I am deeply saddened by this, as I've worked in the animal industry for over 10 years, but as Julie said, at least he died doing something he loved. I just hope that people don't start blaming the wildlife, and rather have respect for them.

I don't blame wildlife...because that is exactly what it is. Steve gambled with wildlife and to be honest I'm not surprised at this at all. Sad yes...I feel bad for his kids and wife....but we have seen this before.

We swam with the rays at Discovery Cove and they really are very docile creatures.

We were shocked and saddened by the news of his death as well. My heart goes out to his family. Like other posters have mentioned, I hope that his family and his fans can find some solace knowing that he died doing what he loved to do. I found him to be intriguing, amusing and educational. He will most definitely be missed!

Our family was also shocked to hear the news of this great loss. Not sure if anyone else feels the same why I do about this (I hope I don't get flamed for saying this), but I do wish the media would be a little more respectful to the family at a time like this.

IMO it is very distasteful for the media to be playing the 2004 clips of the incident with Steve feeding the crocs while holding his infant son. It's hard enough for the family and the millions of people that "The crocodile hunter" had touched to deal with his sudden death - why bring up the controversial issue at a time like this?

My thoughts go to his wife and children.

This is very sad news, but at least he died doing something he loved...

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children...how heartbreaking! I always loved watching him and was glad to see DS starting to take an interest too.

lilpooter - I agree...the media should be ashamed. :sad2: He was a great man who lived a great life...he should be remembered that way...

My DD8's favorite channels are Discovery, Animal Planet, and the Science Channel - she especially likes shows about animals. She loved watching the Crocodile Hunter, and she learned a lot from the show. He will be missed by our family. And I agree with other posters - I wish they would stop running that interview from 2004 and instead concentrate on all the good he did.
:guilty: :sad2:

I think they show the clip of the incident with his son (and the mentioning of how he was almost prosecuted for approaching some protected penguins in Antarctica) to show how he took risks others would not think about taking. While I disagree with his cocky attitude towards things wild, I'm also very saddened by his death - what a shock! I do hope the media leaves the family alone now!
