In 2nd grade, when Care Bears were big, so 1980 something. . . I made Love-a-Lot. I took two ice cream gallon containers and glued them with the openings together. I then took pink kleenexes and fan folded them and then tied with string in the middle and then fanned it out so it almost looked like a flower. I then glued those all over the "box". I used white construction paper for a circle face, with eyes and a candy heart nose. I cut a slit in the back for the cards. THe tummy was also construction paper. It was adorable and I won the most beautiful box that year. Sorry, my pictures are at my parent's house.

Another idea is to take different shaped boxes and make it into a robot using tin foil. That is pretty easy and looks neat. HTH.

My first year of teaching, I took a cracked Tupperware bowl (think the lettuce keeper or any bowl that is narrower on the bottom, wider on the top) and turned it upside down. Then starting at the top, I glued yellow pipe cleaners/chenille wires in a circular fashion until the entire bowl was covered, and it was a bee hive! I sat it on a plate that had greenery and artificial flowers. Then I glued bumble bees all around, some were on wires so they were "flying". It had a signs the read "Bee My Valentine". "You Are So Sweet", etc. The kids loved it. And they just lifted up the entire hive and layed the cards on the plate!

I've always been into music, so in 4th or 5th grade, I made a guitar. Super easy - just get a small shoebox (kids size should work just fine), and cut a piece of carboard into the shape of a guitar (easier than it sounds, I promise). Draw on strings, and cut a hole like a normal guitar would have and that's where the valentines would go. Glue it onto the shoe box (or tape, either way) and you're all set!

I'm a homeroom mom so I recently searched the net for ideas. I found two that I liked...

One was basically a shoebox covered in plain pink or white paper and then a cardboard cutout of a teddybear, monkey or whatever you like attached to the back of it, with paper arms that come around form the back and attach with their hands holding a heart on the front of the box, like it was hugging the box. The animal cut-outs were accented by heart-shaped inner ears, a heart nose, etc. There was a basic slit in the top of the box to insert valentines.

The other idea (the one we're goigngmake as a class) is to take a gift bag with handles, attach a large heart to the front and cut a large "mouth" through the heart and bag. Add large googly eyes above the mouth and accordian-fold arms and legs with hands and feet at each end. (it reminded me of one of those large mylar baloons you can buy with the arms & legs, or even Spongebob)

I don't imagine I can post the images as I don't remember where I got them, but if you are interested in a pic of eaither, PM me.

My dd's first grade class last year did the wipe boxes adn the used those foam stickers and put their names and hearts all over them. It might even say happy valentines day.
