This April my family will be talking a trip to Hawaii. Long story made short: we are being gifted this trip by my father and his wife. We feel very excited and blessed!

Being an insane Disney researcher, I have being trying to read up on Oahu. I was delightfully surprised twice today.

First, a guide book I am reading called the theming and landscape of the resort where we are staying "very Disneyesque." Yeah!!!!!!!!!

Then I found this tour on the internet:

Dole® Plantation & Maze
On your way to the North Shore, stop for a refreshing Dole Whip® at the Dole Plantation. Still a working part of the Dole empire, the Plantation is a tribute to the role that the pineapple plantations played in the development of the Islands. The Pineapple Garden Maze, with 1.7 miles of manicured paths is a spectacular environmental puzzle recognized as the World's Largest Maze in the 1998 Guinness Book of Records.

Bob would love it!

My DW and I recently returned from a trip to Oahu to visit our daughter and son-in-law and we visited the Dole Plantation for a Dole Whip. As you are expecting, they are excellent. However, my favorite, the one with vanilla soft serve swirl is not available there, only the straight pineapple Dole Whip. You can get it in a cup or waffle cone. The cone comes with a piece of pineapple, a Dole signature. They also sell Bob's favorite, the Dole Whip float, but we did not have one of those.

The plantation store is quite a place! It sells all things Hawaiian, especially those that are edible! We bought one of my favorites, milk chocolate pineapple crunch, to take home. :goodvibes

BTW, we stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian resort which I would definitely describe as "Disneyesque" with the theming and shops. One tip that I have for a great meal with wonderful ambiance is the "House Without a Key" restaurant at the Outrigger Hotel down the beach on Waikiki. My daughter and SIL took us there for our anniversary. It was special! :goodvibes

The Dole Plantation is where I had my very first Dole Whip.

We just did the Free stuff while there (Koi Pond, Gift Shop, Garden of Pineapple species from around the world and of course the Dole Whip from the soda fountain) We had limited time the day were in the area of the plantation, but we still spent close to an hour there.

If you want to do the maze, make sure you pick up a local tour book at the airport for discount coupons.

I am thrilled to hear about the Hilton Hawaiin. We are staying at the Grand Waikikian which is part of that resort. Thank you so much for the advice and the info. :)

Thank you for the coupon book idea! Are there any other places you would say not to miss?

We stayed in the Kalia Tower. Be sure to see them feed the penguins at 8:00 AM (or at 5:00 PM). It is very interesting to see and learn about them, especially Icarus. :thumbsup2

Don't miss:

The Arizona Memorial

A drive around the island to the North Shore - this is where the big surfing beaches are located. In the summer - very calm and in the winter - crazy waves - the beaches are all very different - Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay and others.

Get a copy of "Oahu Revealed: The Ultimate Guide to Honolulu, Waikiki & Beyond" by Andrew Doughty -about $11 on Amazon. He has a book for each of the islands - worth every penny - the authors live in the islands. We used the books for Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. They are terrific.

Oh, Please post a picture of the dole whip on the Bawb Dole Whip Sticky. You are right, Bob would love it!

One correction - the "House Without a Key" is at the Halekulani Hotel, not the Outrigger. It's a great place for a romantic dinner. Rachel Ray liked it, too! :thumbsup2

The breakfast buffet at the Shore Bird of the Outrigger (walking distance on the beach from the resort) is very good and there are coupons for "buy one, get one half off". There is open air seating right along the beach.

Happy planning!
