I live in NJ and last Spring my district gave me a very hard time about my special needs child's home program and wanted to send her to an out of district placement even though it wasn't in her best interests. They wanted what was easier for her. They also wanted me to see the neurologist that they refer kids to and they would pay for it. I said, no thanks, I will bring her to the neurologist she has been seeing and pay for it myself through insurance. Well, today, I find out that the neurologist that they used was charged along with others in NJ for downloading child porn-the rape of a 5 year old. I was disgusted. I know that you are innocent until proven guilty but boy, I am glad I insisted on my own neurologist. Others such as a hockey coach in a nearby town were also charged. According to the Daily Record newspaper from 1/28/05 the Attorney General's office for NJ is saying this is no accident and that these people had distributed this information to others. It is soooo sad. But this is just another example that when it comes to my special needs child, I will go with my instinct and gut before the district's.

Good for you! You are your childs' best advocate, stick to your guns and hang in there!

Holy smokes, that's awful. My mother has always told me to trust my instinct. Glad you trust yours.

It's always very creepy when someone in an authority position abuses it. It's especially horrifying when it involves special needs kids.

This is the second time that my instinct about someone was right regarding my daughter's home program. Just last year, the occupantional therapist that the district said they would trust their own child, made very inappropriate sexual comments about my child. She is gone, Thank God and we had to fight to get a private OT hired who is great.

I learned not to trust their "expert" opinion when they placed my daughter in the local pre-school disabled class that was clearly way above what she could do, and she screamed, cried, and became violent. One day, I scooped her up out of the classroom and said she wouldn't be back. She is basically nonverbal and I should have known better when one day I was getting her ready to leave for school and she knealed down and pointed to the floor which she had never done before. She was trying to tell me she wanted to stay home. It breaks my heart. But it will never happen again.

I feel so badly for the parents that did listen to them and sent their child to this doctor. I would feel so violated if I had listened to them.

Thanks for the support.
