I am having a washer/dryer delivered tomorrow. I know that I should tip the delivery guys, I'm just not sure how much. What do you do?

Also, on Thursday I am having 2 storm doors installed (front and back door). It is being done by Lowes. Do you tip the carpenter that comes out to do this? Should it be viewed the same as the delivery? :confused3

Thanks for your help!!

I see it as, if I am paying good money for delivery, I do not tip. Same as the pizza delivery. They use to charge .50 cents and now I got to order and they was $5 additional for delivery. Because I have to flu and hubby is no good at cooking I went with it, but no tip. I live 1/2 a mile from them. I thought it was exhorbant especially if I am then expected to tip another $3-5

I wouldn't tip in either of those two situations. They get paid a set fee. . .a pretty good going rate. I do always tip people that work in jobs that depend on tips. . .wait staff, pizza delivery, and my favorite. . .bartenders. :D

ETA- we had a painting business for years and it is nice to offer them something to drink or to make them lunch, especially if they are there for any length of time. I know my ex always appreciated that.

I wouldn't tip. It's their job.

I always tip them when tehy deliver appliances! ANd I always get the same two guys, too! Usually I give them 10 bucks each and a cold gatorade, and when i had an old fridge I needed out of the basement they took care of it, even though it wasn't their job.

Spread good karma around and it usually comes back. Even if you just give them 5 bucks, they will appreciate it. I dont think there is a need to tip the door installer though, thats something he is being paid for.

You seriously don't tip your delivery man for pizza? I bet he isnt the one that decides what "fees" to charge, so your really punishing the wrong person in that case. If its so close then why dont you just go get it? Save yourself the whole hassle. Perhaps its the ex waitress in me?

I've never tipped when I have had appliances delivered. Actually I've never thought of it before but I still wouldn't considering I'm paying for delivery.

I've never tipped, but I always offer a beverage (coffee, tea, water or soda) and 4 out of 5 times they decline.

I rarely order pizza for delivery, but if a place charges a $3 or $5 "delivery charge", doesn't that replace the tip? If I order a $10 pizza and pay $3 to have it delivered, am I still expected to pay a $3 tip(which is what I would tip without the delivery charge), so it costs me at least 60% more to get my food delivered? Seems a little steep to me. If the delivery charge is not for the delivery person, why do they charge it?

I always tip for appliance/furniture delivery, $5 - $10 a person, depending upon how long it takes. I've never tipped to have things installed. I tip the pizza guy 15%, but no place around here charges for delivery.

My parents had a screen porch built last summer. It took them a weekend to do it. My parents didn't tip them but every day they would get them something for lunch and my Dad would give them a 6 pack of cold beer. I always told him if it ended up crooked they had no one to blame but themselves :)

I do tip the pizza delivery guy even with the added service charge. Around here it's only $1.50 and I don't believe they pass that cost on to the delivery driver (it would surprise me if they did). But I don't get pizza that often.

For delivery of large items I generally tip $5 - $10 per person, depending on level of service and attitude. I went $20 each for the guys who had to manuever a massive entertainment unit up and down stairs and around corners. They earned it.

However, if I'm already being charged a substantial delivery fee I may reduce or eliminate the tip altogether.

When we bought our new washer and dryer we were charged $50 for delivery. I still had extra cash in my pocket just in case; but it was an easy shot through the garage, and the guys were a bit on the surly side, so no tip.

None of the pizza places we use charge extra for delivery, but if they tacked a $5.00 delivery fee onto my $20 pizza order, I wouldn't tip either. :confused3
That's a 25% surcharge. If they're gonna do that they better pass some of that fee along to the delivery person.

I don't consider installers a tipped position. I would hope they are being fairly compensated for their time/services. I do offer them drinks if they're around for any length of time though.

Isn't the delivery something the appliance delivery guys are getting paid for, too? :confused3

Seriously, those are their jobs. The people employing them are who pay them. I did tip the movers when I moved, though, since I had hired them.

I would tip the pizza delivery guy, though, although I really never get anything delivered. I think those are more like waiters/waitresses.

I usually tip the delivery guys $10. I once had a refrigerator delivered from Sears. He was a young guy and was obviously drinking. He didn't get a tip!!!
I called Sears and received a $50 gift card!

Now food delivery...yes...10% tip.

The installers are iffy...I am not sure on that one. I would probably see how they are, the job they did, etc and base it on that.

The appliance delivery men make close to minimum wage, an "installer" makes substancially more than that per hour in most instances. And if your appliance people have to lug your appliances up stairs and through difficult spots, and dont make a single nick in your wall, you should def tip them. Now if they knock everything over, are rude, or make a mess then Id say its ok not to tip them. AND if you tip them and then use them again, your service will be better for certain.

I really feel that with food delivery and food service if you can't afford the tip than you can't afford to eat out. Cook at home, or go pick it up! Trust me when I say you dont want to be "known" as the person who doesnt tip by the person who is making your food. So if you stiff your pizza guy, I don't think Id be too quick to order there again. They might remember you when making your food. :scared1:

I always tip for good "service" and that's what I consider any kind of delivery! I also tip around $10 per person. Once I even tipped our garbage collectors right after we moved in and had left TONS of boxes at the curb. I gave them each $5 - I figured it would at least cover their lunch and they were definitely doing extra work because of me.

Even though it is part of their job, I just feel that if they do a good job, or if I'm asking more of them, then I should help compensate them.

I agree though, that installers are not "service" positions and don't require a tip.
