My DD10 is just starting to develop, and she has been wearing sweatshirts over her tees at school so no one can see her cami or sports bra strap marks through the material. :sad1: I've tried to find some thicker patterned shirts, but the only one that she feels comfortable in is an REI shirt that was a hand-me-down from someone. The Gap shirts are too stretchy and therefore kind of clingy to the body, Old Navy ones are too thin, Macy's and JCPenny's at our town just don't have cute ones in right now. I'm looking at Lands End right now and may get some.

Has anyone else gone through this?

My daughters have the thin shirts and just layer them, ie a tank or cami with a t-shirt over it.

I have boys but I have discovered that Hollister, Abercrombie and Aeropostale all have higher quality shirts. They are thicker and softer. If you get them on sale they don't have to cost an arm and a leg either.:goodvibes

I've tried to get her to layer, but she thinks "everyone" will know why she's doing it. Ugh.

Who carries the Hollister, Abercrombie and the other kind (can't remember from the post now) shirts? Thanks for the tip!

My Kids Love Hollister, American Eagle, And Abercrombie!!! These Are High End Specialty Teen Stores. Kind Of Costly...
Aeropostale Is Along The Same Lines But Cheaper....thing Is There Clothes Do Not Seem To Last. They Develope Holes, Stretch Into Weird Shapes Or Shrink In Weird Directions. I'd Advise You To Spend The Extra And Forget Aeropostale.

I buy better quality bras for dd's because "tissue" tees are what is in and finding thicker fabric isn't always a viable option.

While I'm a HUGE fan of Victoria's Secret IPEX bras, because of the special design of the bras and are truly no-show, no matter how chilly a room is - I realize these are expensive for pre-teen (and, probably too big). However, VS does have a teen line called PINK and the bras are smaller for younger ladies. I also buy the Victoria's Secret "all cotton" line "lightly padded" bras for my dd's. They are almost always on sale at 2 for 39.99 and come in lots of appealing colors. They also come in 34A or 36A....

Good luck!!:goodvibes

Hollister, Abercrombie and Aeropostale all have higher quality shirts.

I don't know about quality, but these shirts are nowhere near being thick. All of DD's tee shirts are so thin. I think it is hard to find a thicker tee shirt nowadays. The current style now is to layer using a cami underneath. Maybe try the polo style shirts as they run a bit thicker and are a perfect layering top for a cami. Hollister & Abercrombie are way expensive, IMO. Aeropostale is not. For polos, try Target or Kohls if you want a deal.

By the way, Abercrombie, Hollister, AE, etc...all sell tissue tees. The fabrics really aren't that much better (if any) quality than a tee from Old Navy. I base this not only on my opinion, but the literally dozens of shirts & jeans I've purchased for my girls from these stores. JMHO.

Eddie Bauer and Land's End tend to use thicker fabrics; also Gap. Also, woven tops are more discreet this way, and she won't have to swelter in summer heat, so get her some camp shirts that are a slightly loose cut.

If you're buying her white or colored camis, stop now. Get beige, it won't show nearly as badly. Colored camis should be the kind with a double-layer top, with an open blouse worn over them.

If you go to Abercrombie etc check out the boys t-shirts. They are thicker and the quality seems very good (I have not had any rip or get holes....not one). I have 2 boys who are really rough on their clothes and these shirts have gone through both boys and have been handed down in great condition. As we know with most clothes, men and women's clothes are not created equally or priced equally.

my girls (and even me) almost always layer t-shirts now. I LOVE that t-shirts are longer and have coverage now. But the layered look is definitley in. Some abercrombie shirts are made low in the front on purpose to show off a pretty cami or another color tank. If you want an inexpensive idea for tanks. Try buying packages of mens small A-line tanks at W*l-M**t or T*r*et. They come in packs of 5 and they shrink with the first wash. We almost always wear those instead of the more expensive women's version. Right now I have on a cheap Hanes a-line tank with an expensive "One Girl Who" t-shirt. I would never wear this t-shirt without something underneath. It is very cute and nice nylon/spandex fabric, but definitely made for someting else to under it. It doesn't mean that you are cheap to have layers. My dd's like to mix up the colors of the tank too. We find the fun colors on sale at Tillys...I'm not sure if they are national or not. But they have a website www.tillys.com. That store is very popular with the kids and I always find good sales. We stay away from Aero.....unless it is a really great sale. Their clothes jsut don't hold up. Good luck ~Susan

What about those camis with the built in shelf bra?

I hear girls are developing earlier because of hormones in meat and milk. Seems like they're all needing bras a couple of years earlier than when I was in school.

Thanks for all the ideas! I'm just going to have to get her used to layering. Poor girl...she's so terrified someone's going to notice her new self. What's funny is my friend's DD WANTS to develop and asked her Mom to buy her a padded bra. She's obviously going to have to get used to this, but I just wanted to make it easy for her in the beginning. Thanks everyone!

She sure has my empathy. I developed pretty early, and was SO embarrassed I couldn't even talk to my mom about it, and would yell at her every time she suggested getting me a bra.

I was SO mortified by it. And yet jealous of the *popular* girl who was developing at the same time.

And my oldest friend was constantly jealous of my development, while I was jealous of her thin frame. Our moms were friends, and they tried to get us to understand that we were both jealous of each other and therefore we were both envy-worthy, but we never believed them.

It's a hard time. Actually, you both have my empathy.

They all wear layers, my girls have camis of several colors and wear them as part of the outfit. They are supposed to show.

Ok.......someone looking for a "new" clothing business......here is a need that people would be interested in.

Signed a mother of 3 daughters,

I was at American Eagle yesterday and they just got in some cute striped tshirts that were thicker. She's only 10 so they may be too big, I don't know.

I highly reccomend LE. Heavier fabrics with less fading and loosing shape. I love the stuff as an adult and for my son --sorry no girls here. My friend gets a lot for her daughters there though. The clothes are still fun but more conservative and modest too. Best of luck.

Also I do not know how big or how mature her style tastes are but gymboree goes up to size 10 now and the Ts are heavier than most.

It isn't just in puberty. I always still look for thicker shirts. I go feeling the thickness of every top before I try them on. They wash & wear better, & I just don't like parading around, feeling like I'm practically nude. If I wanted to show my bra like Madonna, I'd dress like Madonna.

Look for Hanes Beefy T's. They are made out of thicker, "Beefy" weight cotton. I don't know if they make them in styles for girls.

Also, I think, Express might have some thicker tees out now. I was just in the mall & feeling some colorful tees that were on sale that were pretty thick. Skip cheaper stores. Cheaper stores = cheaper, thinner fabrics.

Also, as someone else suggested, invest in a good SEAMLESS bra. There are also t-shirt bras out that are made to be thinner & seamless, so they don't show lines under more clingy clothes. My bras are Victoria Secret bras.
