OT- The Pill

The pill can do that, but you should really see why your cycles are that way. Not sure how old you are or where you are in life (re: children, etc.). I had aweful, irregular cycles my whole life. Well I never paid too much attention to it until I needed it to get pg! Turns out, I have PCOS. It took us over 3 yars and a few losses to have a baby. I wish I had looked into my cycle more when I was younger and got a hold of how my body worked before.

For me, the pill worked great while on it but when I came off it I didn't get my period for over a year! It just threw my hormones all out of whack!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Having irregular cycles doesn't mean that you'll have trouble getting pregnant. When I went off the pill after 10 years of continuous use, my cycles became terribly irregular again. I got pregnant w/DD w/o even trying, though:confused3 I think that people w/PCOS are only a subset of people w/irregular cycles. I've never read it, but there's a book called something like "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" that is supposed to be excellent for figuring out when you ovulate and when you will have a good chance of getting pregnant.

As for the pill regulating cycles, it worked like a charm for me. It just doesn't last if you go off the pill. As long as I was on the pill, my cycle was quite regular and even got lighter and lighter with time. It was great!

Now that we're between kids, I don't want to go back on the pill for a short time. However, I sure do miss those easy, short pill periods. That alone makes me want to hurry up and have #2 so I can go back on the pill for good!

I was on the pill for years and no problems, had a baby, then got on the patch, no problem, had another baby, got my tubes tied..started having HORRIBLE pains, cramps, heavy bleeding etc. dr. put me on the pill again...Didn't do anything for any of my symptoms, so I had an endometrial ablation...AHHHHHH the best thing I ever spent money on!!!

Have not had a period or pain since March..It is WONDERFUL!!!

This is only for those who are done having children though, I might add.:thumbsup2

First off, PLEASE get checked out for something more serious, as other posters have suggested. A friend of mine recently had a non cancerous tumor removed from her ovary last month, and she thought it was just terrible cramps.

Secondly, another friend of mine really did just have TERRIBLE periods, I mean, she had a 28 day period and a 2 day break, MAJOR cramps, migraines, the whole bit, and successfully regualted everything by taking Yasmin. So if you get the all-clear, go ahead.

Thirdly, I cannot take any form of the pill. It makes me physically ill and totally crazy. I have taken 8 different types over 5 years, and my doctor just finally told me that it wasn't right for me, and that there are some women who can't take it. You might talk to your doc about other (holistic) options to filling yourself up with extra hormones to even things out. I did, and it worked for me.

Lastly, I think we women put up with enough, and if men are supposed to be so much stronger than us, THEY should have the periods!!! :rotfl:

I have PCOS, polycystic ovary syndrome. I don't have regular periods, in fact I will go many months without one unless I'm on the pill. Even though dh had things "taken care of" to prevent another child (more so I don't have to stress when I "miss" than out of not wanting another, we had to use fertility treatments for my sons) I am still on the pill.

once i began my period again six months after my 3rd child, i had awful periods (cramps, heavy bleeding, trouble using the restroom, you name it.) my doc checked everything out, said i was fine and put me on the pill to control it. I used it for a year, it was great, but decided i did not want to take it forever. so i went off 6mths ago and i am fine now. heavy flow for a day, somewhat irregular, but no pain and short periods.

I second the Mirena IUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't had a period in 3 years!:cool1:

YES! I'm on the pill and I don't even need to be, DH had the V 4 years ago. I start the BCP, or what I call the period control pill about 6 months ago. I'm on the one where you only have 4 periods a year, and IT"S THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD!!!!!:woohoo: I had such painfull periods, now I only have 4 a year, and they are short, I only have pain for 1 day!!!

I have had TERRIBLE monthlies since I was 10 years old. I went on the pill at 12. Worked like a charm until about 2 years ago when I started having sharp localized pain. Ultrasound = nothing. Laproscopic surgery = Stage four endometriosis. Make sure to check all your options first.

I love the pill! I'm on Seasonale and only have 4 a year and its great. I will say that there are many different pills out there and they all are very different. I was on Orthotricyclene all through college and I was a raving loonie most of the time and had horrible mood swings. Tried Yasmin for a bit and didn't like that one either. Next was Aleese which was a nice change but then Seasonale came out and that is by far my best one and I'm not a raving loonie all the time nor a fragile basketcase. Just be willing to talk options and be willing to change if you don't like the first one you are on.

Oh, my only advice is be careful when you start taking it cause you can have light bleeding for a whole month.

I started a week before my 2 week disney trip and was NOT impressed! Only swam twice the whole holiday! It stopped after the first month, but still, just a word of warning!

I also had the pain (not helped by heavy duty Ibuprophen 800 mg), heavy, long periods for years. I had enough. I can't do the pill because of leg circulation problems. My dh had the big V a few years ago so I didn't need anything permanent but I decided to have an endometrial balloon ablation. This is permanent so you have to be done having kids.

I've had 3 cycles since the procedure and they've been so easy! For some women you may not ever get a period again. I guess I'm not lucky enough for that to happen but I'll take the light 3 day pain-free periods I've been having.

I highly recommend this procedure.

I am 19 and have PCOS (PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome) which is a fertility disorder and PMDD and was perscribed YAZ for these two conditions and for birth control and it is a true LIFESAVER!!!! I highly recommend this pill! It has really made me a happier person while on my period.

Just be careful. I was having heavy periods and they put me on the pill. I was active, didn't smoke. Long story short, I ended up in the hospital on the 21st day with a massive blood clot. I am very lucky to be alive.

After it was all over the gyn said I guess you know these means you can take hormones. Duh.

I know they work for lots of women but read, research, and be very aware when you take the pill.

I went on the pills when i was younger because I would be in really horrible cramp whenever I get my period..and they would last forever, to only come back again only couple weeks after they stopped...and the pill really helped! My period was regular, and less heavy and just a few days and most importantly, no cramp at all!

My dh had the big V a few years ago so I didn't need anything permanent but I decided to have an endometrial balloon ablation.

Was yours done in the hospital or in the doctor's office? My OB/GYN is going to start doing them in her office soon... it would definitely be less expensive, so I'm considering that.
