how do they work? do any brands work better then others?
i priced them at walmart.. they run from 6-10 bucks a bottle..
i'm a natural redhead so my skin is pale. last year i was using a tanning booth. but this year i have no time :( help!

I have been searching for a tan for 43 years!!! I am a redhead as well and never tan naturally, I have had the best luck with the spray tan booths at a salon, I've tried everything and this is the only thing that looked good. The self stuff may work ok for darker people but if you are fair there is just less room for error.

I use the Jergens one. I also am very light and use it every other day or so until I get the color I want. Then I reapply when it starts to fade a bit. It's not like the tanners of yester-year when you used to turn bright orange. :scared1: This one is quite nice. You can also get it at Costco for a good price.

I fairly light skinned as well, and I would recommend getting a spray tan too. They last longer and look more natural than the stuff you buy at the store..

I never have any luck with the do it yourself tan stuff...

And so it begins the perpetual sunless tanner thread which is a sure sign that summer is about to come. I am a little disappointed that I was not the one to start it this year. I guess I have just given up b/c I just cannot get it right. I have tried just about everyone on the market. Jergens is okay but after you just get it right, then you have to scrub it off and start over.

By the way does anyone think it smells like cooked hamburgers when you used it the next day??

No need to apologize I was just thinking of how I have not even begun my quest this year and here someone else is already trying to get a tan.:rotfl:

I've used the Jergens stuff that builds up a tan, and I've also used Clinique. They're both good and didn't turn me orange. However, I didn't really like the color, so I've just resigned to being more-or-less transparent as I do not want the sun exposure.:)

Coppertone has a gradual tan that I like. The smell is not as bad as the others and it truly is gradual, so you don't get that orangy look.
I have tried the department store ones that are pretty expensive and I like this one best.

Oh, and if you need an SPF in it, Arbonne makes one that I use when I will be in the sun all day. It is light and forgiving if you mess up a bit.:goodvibes

I'm another redhead!

I like Neutrogena or L'Oreal. Both brands give me a realistic brown (not orange) color. I like the spray-on self tanner from both brands. No need to rub it in and it doesn't streak!

Neutrogena MicroMist Tanning Spray

and

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist

And if you want to go the department store route, Clarins makes wonderful self-tanner.

And as a pale redhead who cannot tan naturally, I always wear sunscreen! I love Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock. My dermatologist recommended it!

I have very fair skin also. I have tried Dove, Jergens and Aveeno. I really do not like the smell of the Jergens lotion. I do like the smell of Dove, but Aveeno is the only one that does not make my skin itch. I have sensitive skin and I use Aveeno every day year round without the color, but last year I used the Aveeno gradual tanner lotion and I liked it. It did not turn me orange.

Good Luck.

Redhead here also... here's my question. When you go to the salon for a spray tan, how do you keep your hands from looking weird? Same thing with at home lotions. When I wash my hands afterwards, they end up lighter than my arms which looks strange to me.

I just bought Dove Engergy Glow body lotion (with gradual self tanners) last Thurs and have been using it daily. I have a light tan look and I like the smell too. I am very fair skinned so I bought the one for fair/medium skin tone. My "tan" doesn't look orange or too fake, but like I just spent the day outside.

Another Dove user! I really like it and have used it on and off for a year. The one thing I do differently is put it on in the evening before bed and shower like normal in the morning.

I have tried the Jergens and Olay brands and just could not tolerate the smell.

Questions for those of you who used the spray tanning booths - how much are they and how long do they last?
The tanning moisturizers don't get dark enough for me and the self tanners look too orange! I love being tan but don't want to risk cancer!

Are there places you can go an get a tan spray? I'm in a wedding in Aug and I hate strapless dresses. I need to do something because I'll have a tank top type tan this summer in a wedding gown. Yuck!

I went and got a spray tan on Saturday at the local spa here in town. It was done by a person vs a booth. It only took her 10 mins to spray it on and it takes about a minute to dry. It lasts about 7 to 10 days (at least that's what they tell me). I'm going to a wedding in 2 wks and I wanted to see how the tan looked so I went ahead and had it done ahead of time. I will probably go back 2 days before the wedding to get it done again. The cost at the spa I went to was $25.00.

Are you looking for a shade lighter or darker than "Dancing With The Stars" tan?

I love Tantowels. It is basically a baby wipe in a foil packet and it is soaked with tanning liquid. I like it because I don't have to use it every day. I put a touch of body lotion on my feet, ankles, knees and elbows. When I start out I put it on one night before bed, and then use a second towel after my morning shower. That gets me plenty dark. Then I can put one on before bed every 3 or 4 days. It dries really fast, can be used on the face (and I'm super-sensitive), doesn't stain clothes, and doesn't smell as bad as the many others I've tried.
