OT: Smocks for school

DD is in 1st grade and the teacher has asked that the kids bring a smock in. In all her years of daycare, preschool and kindergarten, this is the first time she needs a smock. I remember when we were in elementary school (back in the stone age), everyone wore one of their father's white button down shirts.

I need ideas...so I thought I'd find out....what does your kiddo use for a smock at school?

Our daughter has used one of her brother's old T shirts the last two years for her smock. She starts 1st grade on the 9th and has picked out my middle son's old Jeter T that does not fit him anymore.

The teachers recommend this option. They cover more and are very easy for the kids to take on and off. Of course, you can always buy a larger shirt if you don't have an old one. My daughter just gets a kick out of using her big brothers shirts.

I have 2 kids in elementary school who need smocks. I can never find actual smocks in stores. We gave each one of them one of their older siblings old shirts. My 6 year old took one of her 13 year old sister's shirts and my 8 year old took one of her 16 year old brother's shirts.

We tried using one of my husband's shirts for them but they were too big.

an old flannel shirt from dad or any long sleeve shirt from dad will work

my dd(10) used my bil's(20) old shirt last year. this yr my dd(5) starts kindergarden and we dont know if shes going to need one but if she does acmoore has them for $5 thats an option

I'd go with the dad shirt option. But Crayola makes a smock that can be found with the art products at Toys-R-Us, and is probably in other stores, as well. It won't cover long sleeves, though!

We use an old shirt also.

Check with the school to be sure that fabric is OK. Every so often an outbreak of head lice makes all those old-shirt smocks impractical. As a result, some schools prefer plastic. You can find them at many of the dollar stores or at a craft store like Michael's.

Otherwise, an old oversized shirt really is the easiest solution. Don't be afraid to cut the sleeves to a manageable length.

I usually buy 8-10 men's small t-shirts at rummage sales. Most of the time I can find them for 25 cents each. I send those to school for smocks and we also use them at home for paint projects. The plastic ones you can buy at the store are crap, they rip easily.

I give them the hidious tshirts that DH can't throw away. They work great!

I just gave my DD a shirt that I had gotten from a local minor league base ball team that I am now to small for yay:). Its pink. Shes happy.

My kids use very large T shirts. The craft store sells them for like $3.

I taught 1st grade for 20 (GULP) years...I would say go to your local Salvation Army store and get a mans white dress shirt. Break out the paints and let your child go wild!!! The buttons are so much easier for the kids as well as the teacher. If the class has been using paint or messy glue trying to get a tee shirt over their head is horrible!!! My daughter goes to first grade this year. We went and got a shirt and my little one painted the back with sponges and glitter fabric paint. She loves it! I used to send the smocks home before every vacation so they could be washed. I never had a problem with lice thank goodness! I found the plastic ones did not protect sleeves and the string always broke off etc. Just my 2 cents.

I sent notes home last week stating that my 1st graders need smocks....we specifically stated "no ties nor strings" & stated that one of dad's old large t-shirts/dress shirts would work best.
