My 3 year old daughter wants to make rice krispie treats for Valentines Day and I am looking for ways to dress them up a bit. I thought about making them mickey shaped like in the parks. Has anyone ever added sprinkles? Did you mix them in or mash them on top? I also have some little m&ms I may toss into the mix.

Any ideas or tips?

My 12 yr old made some the other day and then she pressed candy hearts into them after she put them in the pan. You could do that with m&m's or other candies.
This may sound crazy but when I have used food coloring in my marshmallows to change the color the treats seemed to turn hard really fast.

Most "sprinkles" will melt from the heat of the marshmallow mixture -- they work great just sprinkled on top (and you may want to sprinkle some on the bottom of the pan before adding the mixture, for a 2-sides effect).

Harder items (like M&Ms) can be mixed in. Gummies (bears, worms, whatever) can be mixed in, too, and can be an interesting add-in.

As far as shapes, I'd make a pan and cut them rather than trying to mold them individually (unless you have a lot of molds!). As a bonus, you and the kids can have the scraps for snack. :thumbsup2

Agree with PP...it really is easier to just cut them unless you have a Mickey head cookie cutter. If you want Mickey style use a little icing (choco & vanilla) piped on, let it dry, and wrap them up...you could pipe any character really. I've found that the small round sprinkles or sugar sprinkles work best.

I made them before and put them on popsicle sticks and dipped the ears in chocolate! YUMMY!

You can color the mashmallow, butter mixture pink by adding some red food coloring before the rice crispies. Cut them into heart shapes, dip one end (or 1/2 the heart) in chocolate and spinkle little candie hearts on the chocolate before it sets. If you ask the bakery dept. at you local grocery store they will sell you some of their sprinlkes for less than a $1 usually.

DD and I made them last year for V-day. We made two pan's worth and then drizzled melted white chocolate- added red food coloring to make it pink- over the entire pan in a criss-cross pattern. We then cut them out with heart shaped metal cookie cutters. They were a huge hit at school and very easy to make. After the chocolate cooled and hardened up, we wrapped them each in red saran wrap and attached the actual valentine on top.

Something else you can do to add flavor as well as color is to add a small package of Jello after melting the marshmallows but before adding in the rice krispies. Strawberry is pretty good, but the "blue" Jello (blue raspberry?) was the tastiest. Pink would be better for Valentine's Day, though :-). Anyway, it was a big hit at my house. Once you add the Jello, stir well to dissolve, but add the krispies and spread in the pan quickly. The Jello makes everything set up a little faster.

Oooh, I have to try this!!! Thank you.

The other thing I've done is to use Fruity Pebbles instead of Rice Krispies in the recipe. DS loves them!

See, this is why I love the forums! Y'all always come through with awesome ideas!
I have not made rice krispie treats since college. But, this month I may end up making them 10 times to try all the different cool ideas! :lmao:

Thanks guys!

Yeah, other cereals can work, too. I've used Kix to good effect before.

Oh, I forgot about that. I have made them with kashi's Go Lean crunch and added cranberries for a little healthier version. It still had lots of sugar from the marshmellows but at least there was a little fiber and protein.

We do this occasionally, but we only use a FEW Fruity Pebbles. (I think the recipe calls for 6 cups of cereal and we do 5 cups of Rice Krispies and 1 cup of Fruity Pebbles.) It's enough to give them a splash of color, but not enough to substantially change the taste. IMHO, switching out the Rice Krispies completely with a pre-sweetened cereal like Fruity Pebbles makes the finished treats TOO sweet... but if you just add a few for color it's not a problem.

I cut them out with a cookie cutter and frost them. I melt a can of frosting in the microwave and pour it over the cut out shapes and add some sprinkles. The kids in my DD2 preschool class loved them for her birthday.

Oooh! ... I like the melted frosting idea, too!

I just did a pan with m&ms mixed in for my daughter's hockey team. They were a big hit.

I love all the great ideas here!

How did you keep the m & m s from melting. I tried it this week and they completely melted. I did line the pan with sprinkles as someone else suggested and then sprinkled more on top and they didn't melt. That worked great by the way but the m & m's were history!
