My DNiece will be baptized on Palm Sunday. My DSis asked if I would make the cake. She had requested red velvet ( I do make a mean red velvet). I just wasn't sure if this was the appropriate choice for a baptism.
Should the cake be something white with white icing? Does it matter?

Thanks.

My guess is if your DSis requested the Red Velvet cake than that is the kind she wants.

Yes, white would probably be traditional (not sure - I'm assuming this is an infant baptism? We do ours when people are older, so not sure all the traditions of the younger ones.) but I'm the kind that would tend to buck tradition especially with food. I don't care for white cake all that much, so I could easily see me requesting something totally different.

if you feel like the red is over the top for a baptism, why not leave out the food coloring. it's not like it adds any flavor. the cake won't be stark white because of the cocoa powder, but it would be subdued and you won't have to worry about any red cake crumbs showing through the white frosting.

I say just make the red velvet and ice it white and maybe decorate it a little and it will be great.

White is traditional, but Red Velvet for a baptism can be easily explained theologically -- if questioned (I really don't think it will be) the red cake can represent the blood of Christ, shed for us, making us white as snow (white icing). Mmmmm....red velvet.....:lovestruc

I would make what she requested. As long as it is iced in white, I don't see why it matters what the layers are.

What religion/denomination? Just curious...

I don't believe the type of cake is an issue, regardless. I'm sure that any g-d involved isn't too concerned about what flavor the cake is, eh? ;)

Baptism= Celebration
Cake= Celebration
Yummy Cake= extra fun celebration

Go with the red velvet.....everyone will enjoy it!

P.S. We served chocolate at both of my dd's baptisms.

I read the title and thought RV was kind of fitting for a baptism, lol.

Since you say you make a mean RV, would you care to share your recipe? I adore RV cake but have not attempted to make one myself.

OP here. Thanks for the input. Red Velvet it is.
DNiece is an infant, we are Lutheran.

My recipe is borrowed from the cake doctor. I use Red Velvet mix instead of the chocolate box mix it calls for. It is super moist and super easy.

There is the link. I am just using two round pans, not cupcake tins. I also just use plain home made cream cheese icing instead of the recommended one.

This was also my first thought. The red can represent the blood HE shed.

as long as it is iced white the kind of cake on the inside doesn't matter. Both baptism cakes for my kids were chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and white icing (the cakes were delicious and as far as I know no one thought that it was odd that the entire cake wasn't white).

My DSis asked me to make pumpkin pies for my DNiece's baptism. Pumpkin pie was appropriate for the season, so I made 6-8 pies. Not a big deal, IMHO.

I think any type of cake is appropriate for any occasion these days. Remember when wedding cakes used to be pure white inside and out? Nowadays they're chocolate, carrot, etc. with different toppings and fillings. They're decorated with colorful flowers, fruit and even have Mickey & Minnie on top (mine had bears)! I think a red velvet cake is perfectly fine for a baptism!

I wouldn't care as long as it is pretty. KWIM

Want to share the reciepe?

OK - fellow Lutheran here - Red is the "celebratory" color of the church. It is used for confirmations, Reformation Sunday. From a web site - I found that:

Additional uses of red are Reformation Sunday; Holy Cross Day (Sept. 14); on such festive occasions as dedications, anniversaries of a congregation and its physical structure; festive days celebrating the office of the public ministry, such as ordination and installation.

So - I think red velvet fits in nicely! Of course - I happen to like red velvet cake too!

I'm Lutheran, too, and I think red velvet would be fine. It would never occur to me that you had to have a certain kind of cake for a baptism. I think you'll be fine with the red velvet.

I've been Catholic my whole life and have never heard of rules for cakes. I don't see how it could make any difference what flavor or color the cake is, since the cake doesn't have anything to do with the sacrament...it's just part of the refreshments after.

If red velvet cake is what they want, make red velvet and don't give it a second thought!

Change Lutheran to Methodist and your reply would have been my exact reply.
