While I was out today and my mom was babysitting, we received a call from someone who said he was interested in buying our property. The only property we own is our home and the lot it sits on and it is not for sale. I have serious concerns that this is some sort of scam and have no intention of calling the guy back, but I was curious if anyone else had encountered this. It seems very fishy - we're in Minneapolis, he called from Chicago. We just refinanced our home, so maybe our information is "fresh" in the data world. Anyone have something like this happen to them?

What does "OT" mean? Normally I'd think it means "off topic", but this is the community board...there is no "OT". :confused3

Not familiar with any house buying scam. :confused3

Have you checked w/ the neighbors. Have any of them been contacted. Could someone be trying to buy space for some sort of development:confused3

BTW--I've seen many people write OT, even here on the community board.

my in-laws get calls about purchasing our property frequently. the callers don't contact us because we're unlisted. FIL just tells everyone that my DH owns the property and takes their name and number. DH doesn't call back b/c he's not interested in selling, renting or leasing mineral/oil rights. 75 acres of undeveloped land (except for our house) is very valuable in our area, so i don't doubt the calls are legit, but DH is adamant about not getting rid of a single square foot.

Could they want to lease some of your land for a cell tower or billboard? My BIL makes about $1200 a month off of leases on parts of his property. Not bad since you can't see any of it (except the cell tower) from his actual yard.

I don't know what kind of area you live in but do have some experience with real estate and can tell you that one of the things the teach new agents is the cold call trick. They will just go down a street calling each house seeing if the are interested in selling their house as a method of drumming up business. Sometimes they will tell you they have a client interested in buying in your neighborhood but does like anything that is available. What it boils down to is a real estate agent looking for business. Not something I would worry about.

We've had this when I was little, and when I moved out someone who was looking at houses in the area, because their agent hadn't found anything they liked and they liked the house I was living in. They didn't know I was renting so I imagine they just looked it up in the phone book.

they moved it over from the budget board.

We own several properties and get these calls and postcards all the time...no matter how many times we tell them we are not interested they still harass us.

This is on a piece a property that is vacant, we are renovating it to rent, never heard of them calling about a property that was occupied though.

When I got these kind of calls in the DC area I would tell the person calling I was very interested in selling. I would quote a price that was about $100,000 over current market and tell them they could come over the next evening with all the contractual papers and drop them off for my attorney to review. And then I would ask what date they wanted closing to be, so I could arrange for a new place to live.

Somehow this seemed to turn them off.
