OT Rabbits as pets?

Since this is on the budget board just a heads up that at my veterinarian office an appointment for a rabbit (if it gets sick) is the same cost as it is for a dog or cat and they usually recommend neutering which is an additional cost for that $19.99 sale pet.
When I had a rabbit he roamed the house as he wished. He wasn't very cuddly and despite having a litterbox in his crate he still kicked his poo out.

Our rabbit from the shelter was $25 and already neutered. I also looked at his crate at the shelter and his poop was neatly in the litterbox. This was one advantage in getting a full grown rabbit from a shelter. Also, pet stores will often tell you the rabbit will be smaller than it really will to make a sale. Ours was already grown, so no mystery there.

I agree on adopting from a shelter! There are so many buns in need of a home at the shelter and so few people think to go there! Plus you will know how big they will be since they are likely not babies.. and they will be altered... and you can get a feel for their personality!

Congrats if you chose to adopt a bun!!!

We have lots of rabbits. We have 25 now...13 babies for the fair.
We raise Florida Whites and Netherland Dwarf rabbits for 4H. They live the best life as they are show rabbits. They are watered 2x's a day and fed 1x a day. They get the spa treatment...nails and such too.
The Florida Whites are more aggressive and the dwarf will be if not handled.
Overall, we find it is that way with any breed rabbit not handled and around people. We play and hold ours quite a bit and even then they have bit the DD's before. They are cuddled and treated like kings and queens. Overall, we love our rabbits and wouldn't trade them for anything.

We had a Netherland Dwarf that looked just like yours in the picture. She's no longer with us but we just loved her and will never forget her. :goodvibes

If you are looking for a rabbit alternative, why not get a guinea pig? We've had several of these and they are kid friendly, have great personalities and are very easy to care for.

There's a rabbitt eating our garden. We see him every morning.

You could just save yourself some money, plant a garden, and eat the little bit that the rabbit didn't get. Just do "rabbit watching" like bird watching with the kids.

No vet bill, no dirty cage to clean, and support for your local wildlife.

I'm very allergic to cats, so we got rats. I love them, they're very, very friendly, but I found out I'm also allergic to them, too. I was fine with the hamsters. Before getting a bunny, make sure you aren't allergic. I think rats make great pets, but I wouldn't get female ones again. Ours are 1 year old, and one has already had a tumor removed (benign), and has another growing. Male rats are calmer, but tend to mark their territory (they pee on you). If we get them again, I'll get male rats, and have them fixed, and avoid the whole tumor issue.

We love our bunny!! He is indoors and goes in the litter pan. I'd suggest going to your local 4-H and talking with the rabbit club leaders to find a good pet.

I didn't enjoy owning a bunny (I've had dogs, fish and cats in the past). She needed to chew alot and I felt I spent a lot on chew toys for her. Despite this she chew remotes, cords and pulled up a patch of the carpet with her teeth. She wasn't aggressive but not cuddly either.
