OT: potty training

I believe that people are able to train their children much earlier, but both my boys were around 3. Neither decided on their own that they were ready...I did it during the summer because I'm a teacher and I needed that consistency. My MIL watches the kids during the school year and she can be a pushover and I didn't see her being consistent with them. So anyway, I decided when it was time, but I waited until I knew it'd work.

Our oldest was 3 years 3 months and it was within a matter of a couple weeks to be day and night trained. Our second is currently being trained and he is 2 years 10 months. He is nearly 100% trained. We still have to remind him and watch him like a hawk with #2, but he's got the pee stuff all done.

Good luck- as you know you will get so many opinions. It's really going to come down to you and your lifestyle and personality.

my only caution at all is that this is the one area a toddler knows they have full and complte control over, no matter the consequences by someone else.

so make it fun and they will be more excited. going to the potty is work for a toddler as oppossed to work for the adult with a diaper.

6 kids.
#1 potty trained at 18 months with lots of consistancy on my part (and may I add los more energy at 22 than I now have at 44?)

#2 potty trained jusrt before 2nd birthday as I told him two year olds use the potty!

#3 tained at 2yrs 8 months just after baby sister was born because he wanted to be a big boy (I tried to get him trained before baby came but no go, he has always been my laid back guy and just didn't care about it)

#4 2.5years and she trained all at once, day and night.

#5 tried at 2 on and off, seemd like it might be a go, then he just refused to go on potty, tried at 3, huge power struggle, I am older, I gave up as I had a preemie baby to deal with as well. approaching 4th birthday he came to me and said, I am ready to use th epooty now Mommy, and he did. no more accidents ever! Onlycavet was overnight, completely dry for a month overnight but wasn't sleeping well adn gettin up 2/3 times a night??? Now he rarely makes it through night and I've put him back in pull up for now (which he changes and attends to) He doesn't want to wear it but after waking him to potty at 1am and again at 6am an dstill getting wet pants at 8am??? I'm tired of laundry? who knows?

#6 just turned 2, peepees on her own all day and dry through nap, overnight in diaper?

you all figure it out, I absolutely can not and have given up trying. lots you give up at 44 years old I think! now I'm happy if we can all get through the day and get dressed in our clothes as opposed to wearing yesterdays clothes, pj's, or shirts only! yeah for summer, put your suit on and lets go out to the pool!

My 5 yo dd was 25 months and going on the potty full time
My 4 yo was 27 months and using the potty full time.
I think the key is being consistent, we litereally did nothing for a full week, and that was all it took...went right to underwear (but did use pull ups for longer car trips and for night time., but they were told they were undies and cannot get them wet or we would have to throw the Princess' out..lol)
My 19 mo dd is showing a lot of interest with using the potty and hates being we tor dirty..we also use cloth diapers though, so she feels when she is wet.
WE used stickers too as rewards...small for pee pee, medium for poopy, and a BIG one for staying dry all day..they loved looking at their chart and would show anyone who came over.
We also leave a potty in the car (still do..lol) for the times when we can't make it to a restroom.

DD#1 potty trained at 33 months, it took 2 days. Had tried earlier but was very resistant to the idea. DD#2 was trained at 29 months in a week. Getting rid of the pull ups was key in both girls. Both are dry all night long too.

My oldest daughter took her diaper off a week before her 2nd birthday and never had an accident.

We started my son when he was 22 months. He was in underwear shortly after his 2nd birthday but continued to wear Pull-ups at night for about a year.

My youngest started potty training also at 22 months and was done - night and day - by her 2nd birthday.

They're all different -- good luck!

Hi all-My 3yo DD who will be 4 at the end of the month is delayed in alot of her development. She was in the Early Intervention, now she is in a preschool with alot of kids just like her.I started PTing her but she doesn't understand and she still can't speak that well.I HATE pullups, should I just put her in panties and try cold turkey. Her doctor said since she was delayed in everything else,I should expect it with this as well, but I am getting tired of the pullups.Any advice welcomed.

All three of my children were trained at just around 3 years old. Three years for me just seemed like the magic number in our house, I started talking about it to them, went to the store at around their third birthdays and bought some special underwear, and the potty training came instantly almost, they never had accidents and almost within a month of being trained during the day, they were trained during the night also. For me one of the key factors is that I had to be up to the potty training challenge, since my three are all very close in age, I was never able to devote the time to a child I was going to have to follow around all day asking if they had to go.

My little one turned 2 in Jan. we started training on Mar. 24 and he was completely finished by Apr. 13. Not one accident since! not even at night! we were so proud of him, and I am so luckey! I used to work in a pre-school, and some of those kids were almost ready to start school, and they were still going in their pants, they wouldnt even tell us if they had to go, they would just go! so I think it depends on the child.
