Hi all! Posted this on the community board and they referred me to you guys for some info!

We are planning a trip to Canada (sometime in the next year), driving from NJ and would like to do the falls and Wonderland.

Any tips on when to go, where to stay, things not too miss?

I'd really appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks,

Curly :wave2:

Hi Curly:

Let me answer that with a question of my own;

"I'm planning on visiting the USA. What is there to see and do, what is the weather like and where is a good place to stay?"

As you have mentioned Niagara Falls and Canada's Wonderland,
it would seem you are looking at the Golden Horseshoe region of southern Ontario as your destination. I would direct you to:

www.ontariotravel.net
www.toronto.com

Both are excellent sites for your vacation questions.

sorry. dumb questions....huh?

Thanks for the websites!!

PCW is very similar to (but not quite as good as) Kings Dominion in Virginia. PCW is crowded on weekends, try to go during the week if you can. PCW does have a pretty good water park. The Toronto area has a lot of great things to see besides the falls and PCW. I would recommend the CN tower and Science center. My son is a manager at PCW, I would be glad to pass along any questions to him that you may have.

Anyone else got suggestions for things to do/see in the GTA?

Where in Canada will you be visiting? Just Ontario, or will you be going to other provinces too? If you give us some more info, maybe we can help more. :)

It's a big place -- southern Ontario is larger than England, Scotland and Wales combined. If you thought Texas was big -- wait until you see Ontario. The recommended websites are great -- and Toronto is a world class city with lots to see and do. (e.g. Royal Ontario Museum, CN Tower, Ontario Place, Ontario Science Centre, St. Lawrence Market, Chinatown, Theatre District, The Danforth, Art Gallery of Ontario, SkyDome with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Argonauts, Queen St. W., Yonge St., Bloor St., Hockey Hall of Fame, Canada's Wonderland, to name but a few places in the Big Smoke.)
Niagara is worth a vacation of its own with the Falls (just the Falls -- I avoid Clifton Hill at all costs); the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake has Ft. George National Historic Site (War of 1812 fort where you can learn that Great Britain won the War of 1812) and the Shaw Festival, as well as lots of expensive stores. There are about 50 wineries in the Niagara Region, many of them with wine-tasting and the opportunity to learn more about the art of winemaking in southern Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment is a world-rated ecological zone stretching from Niagara Falls to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula (separating Lake Huron and Georgian Bay -- the sixth Great Lake). On the way from Niagara to Toronto, you could visit the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum just outside the city of Hamilton.
Ontario -- yours to discover -- it's so much more than Niagara Falls and Canada's Wonderland.

I see by the picture in your signature that you have some kids (very good looking girls!)

If you are travelling from Niagara area to Toronto, in Hamilton there is a place called Dundurn Castle. It is not really a castle but more like a mansion on the lake. We took our kids there a few years back and they loved the tour we received. The tour guides dressed in period clothing and did a good job of keeping us interested in their description of the home.

I know that Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls is quite tacky-looking, but kids would probably get a kick out of seeing it. Lots and lots of places to part you from your money there! It is kind of like the Vegas Strip on steroids ;) , only much, much shorter!

And if you are looking for more to do in Niagara there is the Bird aviary and the butterfly place... they are both pretty cool. A new zoo in niagara also called Zooz (can't comment though as I've never been to it) The maid of the mist boat ride under the falls is neat too.

Toronto is also a great place to visit. So much to see and do!!

Make sure you visit the Canada's Wonderland website to get an idea of height requirements/etc. for the rides and what shows will be on during your visit.

My one tip (sorry I can't help with lodging) is to be prepared for things costing a lot at PCW. We went 2 years ago and a hot dog (not a meal, just a hot dog) was 4.79CDN! Disney sure looks good after those prices. We spent a fortune in food that day. We carried our own water bottles and that's great to do because they have fountains outside the bathrooms to refill your water bottles. I've heard of people bringing in food for lunch, I think that's a great idea. No canned drinks are allowed though ;)

We've always enjoyed Niagara Falls & PCW so I'm sure you'll have a great time there :)

Thank you everyone! The links are great - I have a lot of research ahead of me! Canada...here we come!
