No food poisoning. I think I have become immune to Swine Flu as I have dealt with many patients who have it but I have never caught it. My aunt has had it though

Ow nasty, glad your feeling better now. I'm still praying i get the Swine before i go on holiday.

Oh good - glad you enjoyed it. And are you enjoying being 21?

Of course, it's the best age isn't it?
I've still got my cards up (took most of them with me to open on the day) and a nice big balloon in the lounge - so I really can't get away from the fact that officially I'M OLD! :lmao:

You're not old Diane - I refuse to think like that :rotfl:

ok - it's time to play a few games. First, it's time for a dance because I've finished my first draft...

Now that's done, it's time to play the "help UKStitch do as well as he possibly can" game. The aim of this game is to read my abstract and let me know if it's too long / short or whatever else you think about it.

For those who don't know, the aim of the abstract is to say what a project is about and what the results are in less than a page. Mine weighs in at about 2/3 of a page so seems ok in length but I'm worried it might not make sense :rotfl:

Feel free to ignore this but anything you do have to offer is much appreciated - this tiny section is the one I find the hardest to write as it needs to try to explain the project and make it sound interesting.

I'll apologise now though - my degree and project is computer based so very well may go over your heads but I'm going to post this anyway in case anybody wants to comment.

UKStitch's Abstract said:
There are approximately 180 million people worldwide with a sight condition that classifies them as visually impaired or blind. Many of these people either want or need to use a computer for some reason, but traditional computers and applications do not allow for users who cannot see the keyboard or screen clearly, making them unable to do so.

Screen reader applications have been produced to help these people by reading what is shown on their screens out loud, although there are a number of drawbacks to these.

This project looks at designing and implementing a series of user interface components that take aspects of screen readers and combines them with speech recognition technologies in order to overcome some of these drawbacks. A formal evaluation is carried out to compare an application using the components with the same application using a traditional screen reader.

Overall, the evaluation process shows that while the users involved in this particular study preferred the new components with speech recognition, the evidence is not sufficient enough to say that this would always be the case and further study is therefore required in the future.

Thank you if you do make it to the end of this - you can have the gratification of knowing you've helped me with my MSc as a result :worship:

glad you enjoyed your birthday Diane. I think the secret to a good birthday is definitely to drag it out. Mine lasted 2 1/2 days last year as I started on the friday, then went to London on the Saturday to see Avenue Q and finally met up with Small World for a bit on the Sunday that was my actual birthday.

This year it's going to be even longer though - my birthday is on the monday, then I fly to California on the following Saturday (hopefully going to change this to Friday) for a week of Disneyland and other theme parks, as well as as many gorgeous meals as I can squeeze in :cloud9:

Your abstract sounds fine to me Rob:thumbsup2. However I don't thank you for bringing nightmares back to be about when I did my dissertation:scared1:

Sounds like a good plan, I never enjoy my birthdays anymore. The best one I had was when I went to DLRP for my 21st

Sorry Nikki - I didn't mean to bring back nightmares

Your post scared me Rob , felt like i was in a different world for a mo:lmao:

That's only 186 words - my report is currently 16,598 words long and most of it is just as technical as that - if not more so.

It is for a masters degree though, so it generally has to be quite technical as it is supposed to be a "unique" piece of work.

Well I read through it and it sounded good to me as well Rob, then again I'm no expert!

I'm not an expert Rob, but it seems to sum up what you intend to do without going into unneccesary detail at this stage. Not too technical, so it can be understood at first reading.

How weird - I've just come off the phone from my mum having a discussion about how my dad's coping with his AMD - he's been given a load of gadgets to help him, a measuring thingy to go in a mug which beeps when the liquid gets close to the top, white stick, audio books etc, and she mentioned they were going to speak to someone next week as they think there is something available to help him use the computer!!!!

So yes it sounds ok to me!

My birthday celebrations started on Tuesday 21st July with a celebration meal out with my co-workers, had a balloon on my chair for the meal and a lovely birthday cake with a picture of myself as a baby in my pram (DD2 and Mum arranged this with my BP and boss!) then of course the whole holiday was a birthday celebration for me (and DD2) which ended on Thursday 30th July (my official birthday) with a fabulous meal and another birthday cake (you can never have too many!) at Inventions.
Finally we celebrated last Sunday with Mum with a lovely meal at a local restaurant, and so my birthday officially ended.
I can highly recommend this way of celebrating birthdays!

So maybe I start celebrating mine on 1st Jan and have a year of celebrations

I like having a birthday on 30th November for that sort of reason. As soon as I finish celebrating that, it's time for Christmas celebrations.

Thanks Diane - I'm not after comments from experts on this one which is why I posted it here (no offense anybody).

Same as above - that's exactly what I was hoping for and trying to write with it so I guess I'm on the right lines :goodvibes

How strange - my Masters is in Human Computer Interaction, but I had to propose my own project so it was born from my love of new technologies (I wanted to play around with the speech recognition technology), as well as my need to link that back to my MSc subject.

I found it really interesting trying to do the project as I even had to pretend to be blind in order to test and evaluate it all.

The university seem to think it's an interesting topic as well - they actually asked me if I was interested in extending it to a PhD but I don't think I can afford to (as much as I'd love to) because I don't think I can afford to either quit work for 3 years or go part time for 5 years.

I'll have to weigh up the pro's and con's and maybe see if a uni a little closer to home would do funding for it as I'd love to do the PhD but the cost of 3 years salary + course fees is far to prohibitive at the moment unfortunately, plus the current job market isn't really healthy enough for me to chance leaving my current job :headache:

Mine is a little later than that, but mine is a little too close to Christmas for my liking - the Christmas decorations go up on 1st December in our house so it kind of gets lost a little...
