Does anyone have any tricks up their sleeve for getting a 2 1/2 year old to blow her nose? I can't seem to get her to understand to blow OUT with her nose, and I think she's scared to even try. She's all NO NO when I'm trying to get her to get all the gookies out of there. Thanks!!

This may sound silly but I taught my kids to blow air out of their nose "like an angry bull". We practiced this when they didn't have a stuffy nose. Just walked around blowing air out of our noses. Then ,when they had a cold , all I had to say was "blow like a bull" when I put a tissue over your nose...and voila.

I am right there with you! My 2yo was PERFECT at blowing her nose at a year old and now that she is almost 3 she has a cold and is terrified to do it! Since my 4yo had learned I got rid of the "nose sucker" as he called it but now both of them are sick with a cold this week and DD will not even try to blow through her nose!

I like PP's idea though!

I wish! The closest I've gotten with DD 2.5 is her holding the tissue up to her nose and going "ppphhbbbtttttt." (a raspberry if you will)

I will be keeping an eye on this thread because I have the same question! I read some where to try to get the LO to move the tissue with his nose (just hold a tissue loose in front of his nose and have him blow out his nose to move it....). Doesn't work for us. DS does an exaggerated sneeze, makes raspberries...anything but actually blowing out of his nose!

LOL on the nose sucker. We finally got rid of our own nose sucker uppers as we called them.

I tell my kids to blow out their nose & then to try to blow snot as far as they can, like on daddy's shirt & that gets them all excited.

How about giving him a straw & a cup of water. Stick the straw in his nose (this may come with a warning of don't leave child unattended/don't leave straw out in hands of someone under the age of 20) & tell him/her to blow & see if anything happens. Then try with a tissue to the nose.

Or how about when in the shower, plug up one side of the nose with your hand (push against it) & tell them to blow out the other side & voila, snot in the shower.

I had my kids practice blowing my hand with their mouths - make a big game of it - then see if they can do the same trick with their nose! So, my hand did experience some collateral damage, but they got the idea pretty quickly!

WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!! I still have issues getting my son at age 6 to blow his nose!

I have to laugh at this question.

When DS was little, I thought I was sooooo smart. I taught him to blow by scrunching his nose and blowing air out. This was great. Here he was, a mere baby, and able to blow his nose. I was the best mother ever!

Then he had his first birthday....

My 3 yr old is the best nose blower of all of my boys, better than his 3 big brothers! He just blows nice and hard and it all comes out, love it. The others are so hesitant about it. I have no idea how he learned to do it so well.

That cracks me up...:rotfl:

My DS's pediatrician said that kids cannot really blow properly till about 6 years old. They do not have the mental ability to really do it right, so I never pushed DS, we just wiped and wiped. I am sure that some kids can blow earlier and that some blow once in a while, especially when they are super stuffy. But DS was like most other 2-4 year olds with crusty snot dried to his face and a booger that kept going in and out as he breathed.

This may sound elementary, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Have you tried showing him. Putting the tissue up to your nose, but so your mouth is still visible so he knows it's closed, when you have his attention, then saying "now you try". Some kids are visual learners and understand better by watching than being told how.

My 5yo is fanatical about tissues because he's the youngest and sees everyone else, I still have to tell my 8yo to blow his nose sometimes, but never the 5yo.

My husband is 41 years old and claims that he "can not" blow his nose. In his entire 41 years he has never ever blown his nose. :confused3

If you figure out how to get your 2 1/2 year old to do it, please let me know so I can get my 41 year old husband to do it. lol!

This is a little gross, but try putting your child's hand to your nose and blowing...then put your hand to their nose and have them try.

Also- do you hold one side closed? Blowing one side at a time always seemed easier for my kids.
