I've also posted this on another board, but I wanted to see if I could get some answers here as well.

Help!!! We are visiting my SIL in Egg Harbor/Atlantic City for Xmas this year and we are taking the train into NYC for a couple of days. My SIL was looking at fares and was coming up with $150 per person!:scared1: I'm not sure where she's coming up with this at. :confused3 She's never traveled into the city from where she lives and I don't think she's ever taken any sort of public transportation except maybe a couple times in Chicago. $150 seems very expensive to me. I went to the NJ Transit website and to Amtrak, but I don't know if I'm looking in the right places. I've never taken the train into NYC (except when I was younger and I didn't have to worry about the planning part of it ;)). Can someone familiar w/ this route please guide me in the right direction and give me some advice? We are leaving Atlantic City area 12/27/09 in the morning and returning 12/29/09 in the evening. There will be 4 adults and 4 children total. Thank you soooo much!

I just looked at NJ transit site for dh (planning a trip from NYC to Philly) and looked up info for you. There's no direct train service--using NJ transit you would take a 90+ min bus ride from Atlantic City to Philly and then almost 2 hrs from Philly on the train to NY Penn station (Amtrak direct, which is expensive, or 2 commuter trains, SEPTA from Philly to Trenton and NJ transit from Trenton to NY Penn)

You could take Greyhound from Atlantic City to NYC, much more direct, 2 1/2 hrs total, $25 one way.

I also see that there's a new train service but I don't know anything about it:

Here's what I can find on the NJ Transit Itinerary planner - you will not need to take a bus from AC, but the train from AC goes to Philly, and you have to transfer over to Trenton to get the train into NYC:

NJ Transit bus service from AC Bus Terminal to Port Authority in the City takes about 2 1/2 hours each way. It is $28.50 per adult fare, and $12.75 per child.

Here is a link to the bus schedule: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0319.pdf. This is the summer schedule, so you may have to check back in September for the off-season timetable.
