From CNN:

"LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida (AP) -- A woman died Wednesday after going on a ride at Walt Disney World so intense that it has motion sickness bags.

The 49-year-old woman became ill after riding "Mission: Space" on Tuesday. She was taken to a hospital, and died a day later, park spokeswoman Kim Prunty said in a statement....."

How sad :( Even if it is an underlying health issue that is the final cause of death, M:S does seem like it might just be a little TOO much fun for people. Me not being a rider of it, can't say anything. Pixie Dust for the family, though.

So sad to hear that. We rode it on Tuesday. One of my favorite rides.

Bummer!! That poor lady....I hope her family is ok. :guilty: :guilty: :sad2: At least she died at Disney, I wish I could do that!

I was there the day where the boy of the ambassador died. It was our first time there since MS had opened. We had an hour till our reservation at The cellar in Canada, so I asked my parents if I could go do the single rider, they hadn't liked it that much. I get over there, and it was blocked off for no apparent reason. The next day my sister starts yelling DJ DJ. come look, and it was plastered on all the local news stations. Very sad.

that is quite sad. i do still want to go on that ride though. all my friends keep saying it was supercool! One said that is was nothing, but for that lady i guess it was too much :guilty: :sad2:

Oh, that's really sad. :( What exactly is the ride? I've never been to WDW or seen it. Is it a motion simulator?

Hi Robyn,

It's a centrifuge ride that spins you in little caplets. You spin so fast that you get the effect of zero gravity. Ugh, I am getting ill just thinking about it.

No body is allowed to die at Disney.....procedures make sure that you are not pronounced dead until off the resort property.

Ok maybe that is more myth than reality, but have heard this little fact multiple times through the years, and pretty much validated it whenever there is an article like this to see when and where the person is pronounced dead. Scary PR fact though when you think about it.

This is urban legend...

First of all, if anybody has any questions about disney rides they should always go to Disney com !

Second, i thought you sit in a chair with like 4 or 3 other ppl strap yourself in front of another screen i saw a video of it here . lol tiger woods went on it too. :)

I figured as much as snopes is hands down the best source to shoot down stuff circulating on the net.......

....but here is a little food for thought.....the last 3 or so deaths that were Disney related.....

1) Kid on BTM in Disneyland
2) 4 yr. old on MS
3) And I think there was a Heart Attack on MS if I am not mistaken

All stated that these individuals were pronounced dead at hospital. So yes it may be urban legend, but I am thinking this is reality imitating fiction. Disney may be looking at the urban legend as a good idea.

Scary....oh well when I am down there in 2 weeks I will take my chance at cheating death and going for a couple of spins on Mission Space myself. Just love that ride and hate the bad press about it.

OK, first of all yes there were about 3 deaths that were disney related but like more than half the ppl who go on rides dont even read the signs that have the warning before the ride! I personally always read them since i am smart, and to find out what will be on the ride if i have never gone on before.
Second, if you know you have any sort of serious health problems you should not take the risk of going on the ride! Get with the program ppl! Unless you want to die...

By the way..the person who had the heart attack was the 4 yr old and he had HEART PROBLEMS! Dont' tell me it doesn't clearly state that in the warning signs... :sad2:

If I remember correctly, the 4 yr old did have a heart problem, but it was unknown until after death.

First, I am very sorry for this woman and her family and friends.

I rode Mission Space last August, a short time after the 4-year-old died. I didn't like the ride at all. I was thankful I did the single rider line and didn't waste my time waiting in line. For me, the ride was totally lame and flat out boring. I felt nothing other than a bit of pressure on my chest. I've had more intense rides on the Tilt-a-Whirl. But, despite being in my forties, I can still go on spin and barf rides with no trouble. I suspect that has a lot to do with my Mission Space experience.

My husband's experience was very different. He really liked the ride and would love to go on again but won't. He gets very ill just watching the teacups spin, Mission Space really hit him hard. He felt ill for several hours after going on Mission Space.

My kids love Mission Space, went on it multiple times and would gladly go on it again. They didn't seem to feel dizzy or ill after riding but found the ride to be very fun.

What's my point? I believe Mission Space is an entirely different experience for each rider. Given that, it's not hard to imagine pre-existing medical conditions, known or not, could be a big problem for some people.

I do have a question about declaring people dead. Isn't that usually done by a coroner or a doctor? If so, then it would make sense that people aren't pronounced dead until they are at a hospital.

qruthie (the 'q' is silent)

there is alor of warning sign around the whole ride... for me i love(!) the ride bc it feels so cool for my face lol ... just saying

I liked Mission: Space, but don't see it being around much longer.
*sigh*

Very sad for that woman and her family. :(

I have never been on MS. When we were there in May 2004, I went over to park the stroller so we could figure out who in our group would wait with the kids this time, and who would ride next. By the time I parked the stroller and turned around to walk back with DS age 2, only Grampy was standing there waiting for us. To my horror, DF had taken DD age 5 and headed on the ride (along with my 19 yr. old nephew and my Mom). I would NOT have let DD go on MS. I heard it was intense and knew she wouldn't like it. Needless to say, she HATED it, cried and yelled to get off of it the whole time. And because DF spent the whole ride trying to comfort her, he came off the ride feeling pretty sick and woozy himself.

The looks on (all) their faces was enough for me to say I'll just skip it.

This was the first ride we went to btw, so it took a LOT of coaxing to get DD to go on any other ride there. She thought all the rides were all going to be like MS. Poor thing didn't even want to ride on the Tomorrowland speedway.
Even now, DF still tells people he was disoriented for a really long time after getting off the ride...and I still give him heck for taking DD on it.

We're going again next month, and I'm still not sure I want to ride MS. The recent deaths have me even more concerned than I was before.

That ride is insane...I do not get any kind of motion sickness - but something about this ride got to me. The g-forces are really intense. They say to keep your head straight but I couldn't no matter how hard I tried my chin went down. My oldest DD (who was 10 when she rode it) LOVED it. She is very fearfull of the roller coaster rides, but adored this one and had no problem with the intensity. I honestly think it bothered me more than it did her. I really don't have a thought on the issue of the ride causing deaths, I think it is going to take a lot of doctors, attorneys and scientists to sort this out. In the meantime, my heart goes out to the families.

news said she might of died of high blood problems and dizyness probles which both have warnings everywhere so technicly was her faultO_o but i feel bad for her family still
