My daughter is 10 and is always bugging me to buy CosmoGirl, J-14, etc. She has outgrown the Disney Princess magazines, but the ones she keeps wanting look to me like they are better suited to girls 13-16.

Do any of you have suggestions for mags for girls in the 10-12 range?

Thanks!

I have a reply. Your daughter needs to get american girl mags. They are suitable for your child. P.S. tell her to stop begging you.

I second the vote for American Girl magazine! It's age appropriate...unlike Cosmogirl which often has articles relevant to girls who are in their teens, certainly NOT a 10 year old. As I find Cosmo a pretty tacky magazine, I was not surprised that Cosmogirl was on the tacky side too. It's geared towards older girls...I wouldn't even let a 13 year old read it... it just has things in it that a tween probably shouldn't be reading about just yet.

American Girl is a great magazine that endorses girl power, exercise and fresh air and generally being a good person! Lots of articles on dealing with friends, emotions and other issues that start to crop up for tweens.

it's a good choice!! And it's not too pricey a subscription!! :)

My pick is American Girl as well. I also, on occaision will let DD read girls life(I think that is the name).

My daughter reads Girls Life (for young teens) and Discovery Kids Magazine. I have bought her 17, and Cosmo Girl and after I read them, I said NO MORE!! They are geared towards much older teens. They talk about sex, and what to do if you get pregnant, and advertise clothing that I don't think is appropriate for a 12-13 year old girl.

My DD9 LOVES American Girl--and I like it too!

The only magazine my DD12 always wants when she sees it is American Girl.

I usually pick it up at Michael's with a 40% off coupon.

American Girl is great, especially for the younger girls. As she gets closer to 12 (at least in middle school) Girl's Life is also a wonderful magazine. It does deal with slightly older issues so I would wait til middle school. No where near the content of CosmoGirl or 17.

I vote for Cricket and New Moon as well. I love these mags. They are geared towards a strong female, not a sex crazed one like seventeen and cosmogirl.

I agree with the suggestion of American Girl magazine! It contains no advertising.
As for J-14, my 10 year old got an issue because it had pictures of the High School Musical stars on the cover, and photos inside. However it also had the infamous picture of Britney Spears getting out of a car with no underwear on! The "private parts" were blotted out but the caption explained the incident!!! We had a fun discussion about that! :scared1:

My daughter is 10 and is subscribed to DISCOVERY GIRLS. It is a great mag and is geared for girls 8+. I always skim through the mag 1st and I've never seen anything not age appropiate.

I agree with others that American Girl is great!! It is very wholesome and has great articles. My dd is a bit older than your dd now and enjoys Girls Life too. Beware of Cosmo Girl, Seventeen, etc. I find that they require some censorship on my part (at my dd's age) and have not continued to buy them for her.

DD13 likes Disney Insider, National Geographic Kids, Anime Insider and any teen music mag since her Ipod is one of her favorite things. She used to like American Girl, but I think she is growing out of that phase...kind of in between now...very odd age to pinpoint-one minute she is still into dolls and stuffed animals and the next minute she is talking boys and makeup. Ugh! . I wish they stayed little forever! :wizard:
