to send to the credit card company to close the account----it's paid off & now I want to close it!
ANy one good at writing letters like that or know where I can find a premade form??

the first thing I would do is call and tell them you lost the card - I have closed an account before and forgot that there was an annual billing on it - only to be charged - if someone puts a charge through on the number they will honor it -

by telling them you lost the card - you will get a new number that no one will know - and then don't activate the new card

I would call after receiving the new card to tell them you want to cancel it - you do not need to write them a letter

I've done this many a time! Just write a simple letter saying that you want the account closed and to honor no further charges to it. Make sure your account number is on the letter. Cut the cards in half and enclose them. If anyone else is on the account, husband, etc., have them sign the letter too. No need to tell them it's lost if it isn't!

Many times they will send you a confirmation letter saying they've closed it and basically inviting you to come back.

here's a sample. hope it helps:

Your Name
Your Address
Your City, State, Zip Code

Customer Service Department

Dear Sir or Madam:

I would like to cancel my account, # (fill in the account number). I request that you close this account immediately.

Sincerely,
Your name

Enclosures (a copy of your final bill showing the account is paid off)

Having worked for Capital One, I'll chime in here. You don't even have to write a letter. Call up the credit card company and tell them (as long as you have a 0 balance) that you would like to close the account. They should be able to do that for you immediate. Granted they will TRY to get you to keep the account, it's all about retention. *grin*

Once they've closed the account with you on the phone, request a letter stating that the account is closed and has been reported to the credit bureau as closed by consumer. Hope it helps.

When I want to close an account, I just call them up and ask them to close it and send me a confirmation letter. That's it. I've never had a problem doing that.

I just want you to know - I have requested an account closed and they confirmed it was closed and still put charges on it afterwards - I called to ask and they said as long as someone had the number and put a charge through they would honor it - this was with MBNA -

I learned the only way to have a number no one would have and be able to charge to was a new number I got b/c I reported my card lost -

This is what I do. I always call. I have never sent a letter and the accounts are closed according to my credit report.
