OT: Little girls and bras

My DD is eight and going into third grade also. She does not need any type of bra yet. She is very slender and weighs in about 47 pounds. I teach and the bra wearing seems to be different for every girl. I see girls in eight grade that don't need a bra and I see alot of girls in fifth grade that are bigger than I am. In our area 3rd-5th grade go to their own elem. school and it seems to be cool to wear the bralettes or the camis under everything you own. Maybe start with one of these and see how things are. If they aren't enough coverage go buy some regular bras.

My DD hasn't asked for any yet, but I think she'll want them before she needs them.

My DD11 has been in a bra since 2nd grade. She has taken after me an developed very fast..I think it is totally your decision but I felt like as soon as my daughter started showing I needed to get her into a comfortable bra and get her on the right path. I did not like the idea of pervert looking at my daughter and seeing more than they should and in the long run she was happy and did not feel so self conscience..But good luck whatever your decision....

thank you all so much! we're a very open family and have no problems talking about it (we've been discussing it on and off for a while). I had bought her 2 little bras a little while ago, but we just forgot about them, because i felt like she was so young... but we just tried them on this morning, and i want her to wear them (I do feel she needs to). She's embarassed and excited at the same time.

you guys were all a very big help!!! :grouphug:

Where do you get the American Girl book? Is it in big chain book stores? My DD is 9 and is developing. I started my cycle when I was 10 and had no clue what was happening because my mom didn't think she would need to mention it that early! I do not want my DD to go through that. I wanted to have "the talk" this summer before she heads back to school.

Where do you get the American Girl book?

I've seen the book at Bath and Body Works, but you could probably check a local bookstore.

I see you're from NW PA. I'm in Erie. Where are you located at?

Wow I'm late. My DD11 just started wearing sports bras w/ no curves or padding just this past month. I waited as long as possible to do it because I didn't feel comfortable with her wearing one so early. She wore t-shirts and tank tops under her shirts up until now. She's still not fully developed or even half way.

I ordered mine online from Amazon for $9 or $10. I know the AG site also has it there. If you have a Barnes and Noble or Borders by you, I know they carry the AG books.

:rotfl: i know the feeling my husband also has a hard time with our daughter wearing a bra she is going into the 3rd grade also and she has a few she has had them for a while because they were cute but now she is starting to develop and she has this one slightly padded and he has a fit that she likes to wear it, i just try to ignore him but this is our first daughter and we have a 3 yo also so i will be going thru this again, but i noticed that when the oldest wears light colored shirts that you can see thru them so i have her put one on i would rather point it out than have her embarrassed, so i don't feel that that is to young for one at all. i can't give you advise on hubby as i am in the same boat, :confused3 :)
My daughter started wearing one in the 3rd grade too. My Mom had bought her one becuase she thought is was cute. She really didnt need it. Then I noticed that when she was wearing thinner style shirts she was layering tanks underneath them. I knew she was uncomfortable and she needed something. I wasnt ready for her to have a real one so we bought her the sport bra style. She liked that because although she thought it was "cool" to wear one she was afraid of it showing and people realizing she had one. AND it made Daddy feel better...he is serious denial that she is growing up!;) So maybe you could try that style and see how she likes it.

Our 9 yr old asked me if she could have one. If she's anything like me, she won't need one til she's 16!:rotfl: But she wants one so she can be like her friends, which is fine with me. I think we'll start with cotton sports bras.

I have to second the recommendation about the American Girls' book. I love this book and gave it to our daughter for her 9th birthday.

Thanks fpr the AG book info. I'll look for it this weekend.

pigletof4- I'm from Kane which is near Warren and Bradford. We're about 1 1/2 hours from Erie.

Love the AG book as well. It is at local stores and the chains. I didn't let DD read a little bit of it, but I think I will have her do so soon. Then open up the lines of discussion.

Gotta love the anxiety of being a parent. :scared:

WOW! I'ts like you read my mind....My DD7.5 is also developing quite early it seems. She is also a bit overweight...but growing so fast, she is almost as tall as me for crying out loud...and can almost fit my shoes, quite sad! So, she has had a couple of those cutie matching camis and bras before but the other day she put on a bikini top I told her to wear under a dress, As I helped her put it on I noticed that she was actually fitting into the triangles....I about fell over...I didn't wear one until at least 5th grade, and I'm worried about all those hormones too but never really knew about that until recently. She does eat a lot of dairy, but for goodness sakes, really????
I'm right there with ya! If ya need a shoulder just give a holla!
Do they every stop gettting bigger??/ Where did my baby go?:laundy:

LOVED the American Girl Book The Keeping of ME so did DD she read that book or parts of it over an over for a very long time.

This is an awesome book. Actually I am very impressed with most of their books.

I might be showing my age, but............

Does anyone else remember the pencil test? :hippie:

the only pencil test I know was when i was pregnant and my mom held a pencil on a string over my belly. That one???

Just wanted to add that organic doesn't always mean hormone free. You have to look for the hormone free label.

On bras, my dd is 9 and thin. But under white shirts she will wear a sports bra. And that is it. But the ones that I got at target- that have nothing- no flower no lace nothing! as per her instructions. Are the only ones she'll wear. I think they are hanes too.

Update: I asked DD if she thought she needed one and she said yes, that she can see them poking out in the mirror and that she thinks it would be a good idea. Looks like we are shopping this weekend at some point.

Please share the secret. What is the pencil test????

I only ever passed the pencil test AFTER I had kids and nursed and they started sagging! :confused3

I hate the pencil test! LOL!
