Hello!

I'm not a mum yet, but have 2 nephews, ones 3 and one is 16 months.

The 3 year old has jsut about finished his trinaing now, but they only started to train him about 6 months or so ago, and they aren;t yet considering it with the 16 month old.

Every child is different and my Sister in Law used to work in a nursery so she knew when the right time was her her son and he's done great, no point rushing them into something they aren't ready for.

I think they just need to be trained in time for starting nusery/pre school.

hi torsie:)

Ive always had in mind to start him around 2 years old till the other day, a friend of mine has started to train her little boy who is about 6 days younger than Harrison! so i started thinking i must be leaving it late. i do feel he is still a little young. like you say every child is different:)

Hi Ljay, welcome!
Personally I would say 14 months is much too young - I prefer them to be able to tell me when they need to go. But only you know when he is ready. It doesn't hurt to have a potty in the bathroom so he can get used to it being there, and maybe sit on it before he has a bath if he wants to, but I wouldn't worry about it for quite a while yet. As a generalisation boys can often be later than girls too, so don't be worried if any of his little friends do it earlier, he'll get there when he's ready.

Hello and welcome to the chat thread!

Potty-training at 14 mths?? :scared1: Well, I guess everyone (both adults & kiddies lol) is different. I know where I originally come from (Malaysia), they start potty training babies at quite a young age but to me, that's not really 'training' but just watching their cues and stuff and it's just too much hard work for me lol. Anyway, with my DD (who's now 6.5 yrs old), I started when she was just after 3. We did it for 2 days (lol!) but she was the sort who would get upset when she wet herself. She just wasn't "getting it" - asked her if she needed a wee, she said no and a minute later, she'd wet herself... or if we sat her on the potty at regular intervals, she wouldn't do a wee but a minute later, wld wet herself. We stopped after 2 days becoz I didn't want her to get so upset each time and didn't want to put her off the whole idea. We tried again when she was 3.5 and voila, it just clicked with her from that first morning - it was if someone had switched the light on lol. SHE was the one asking to go for a wee etc etc.. and we hardly had any accidents. Just the odd bit of wet pants but nothing major. We were so chuffed about that.

As for DS (who's now 3.5 yrs old), we decided to wait till he was nearly 3 as well and to be honest, with him, I was dreading it and wasn't expecting much. Friends of mine with boys (same age as DD) really struggled with them. They started around the same time as well (3 or slightly younger) and I think it took them about 7-8 mths before they actually got the hang of it. They had loads of accidents and all. By some stroke of luck, my DS got it quite quickly. Ok, the first 2 days were a nightmare (and unlike my DD, he didn't get upset when he had an accident) but on the 3rd day, it just clicked and he has been brilliant since (touch wood). And luckily for both my two, they were ok with sitting on the toilet, which meant that I didn't have to carry that potty around with me when we went out.

Sorry, gone on a bit there  For me personally, I would say wait till he's a bit older (at least 2 or at least until he kind of starts showing an interest or telling you that he's done a wee or poo in his nappy).

Hi thank you all for the welcome:)

dont be sorry i like to hear how you all have got training etc, any tips be great:)

Potty training at 14months? Wow thats brave...I didnt potty train Kyra till she was 2 and a half, took a week to do it and she was dry at night by 3 (we do have the odd accident lol)

Evening everyone!
First day back at work after half term and I'm shattered! Been a good day though, lots of fun.
Got my Disney confirmation through as well and the £77.68 quoted for 4 adult park tickets for 10 days was right as it's now down in black and white so I can rest easy!
Right I need to go and sort something out for tea plus I've just realised we've hardly any milk left - that's what happens when your son needs a herd in the garden just to keep him supplied in milk!!

Good Evening everyone - Im home as well and like Diane shattered after my first day back - so much to catch up on at work

:sad2: Firstdaybackatworkitis here too :sad2:

My mum was always telling me how my sisters and I were all potty trained by 18 months and I think "yeah, but you had more incentive - terry nappies, no washing machine and no tumble dryer. OF COURSE you got us trained early"

I decided to wait until my children were nearly 3 because...to be honest.... I could then bribe them. "Here's a potty. When you put your wee inside there I will give you 5 Smarties" - they were both dry by day within 2 days. My son also stayed dry at night at the same time! My daughter took a few weeks to be dry at night. I only carried on bribing them for a few days (reducing the number of Smarties gradually) but by then they didn't want to go back in nappies.

The only problem I did have was with my son's bowel movements. For a few weeks he was very reluctant to go and would wait until he absolutely HAD to (would run round for an hour or two humming when it got urgent - but refusing to go until it was DESPERATE) but I understand this is not unusual. Certainly the GP wasn't worried and gave us a mild laxative to help him along and the phase soon passed. (As he is now 16 he will hate me for telling you that!)

Oh you cruel mother:rotfl:

Hi Ljay

All children are different but they will let you know when they are ready. Don't listen to super mums whose kids are so advanced they could probably run the country. Half the time they're telling porkies. My two daughters were toilet trained quite early (18 and 20 months) but I waited until I saw signs that they were aware of what was about to come (holding between their legs, shocked expression on face). When they are ready it does only take a couple of days. Little boys do tend to be slightly later. Lets face it their plumbing is a bit different to us girls:rotfl2:
