My dd 9 (will be 10 in February) has started showing an interest in wanting an American Girl doll. I told her if she were to get one it would have to be one of the historical ones....I like that they have books! :) I am just wondering if she is getting too old....I worry about spending that kind of money and her losing interest really soon. Anybody have a dd her age or older that has an American Girl doll? Anyone have any thoughts on whether or not I should get this for her for Christmas?

Geesh....I can't believe it's already time to start thinking about Christmas.

:disrocks:

My dd will turn 10 tomorrow. :cool1: All that she wants for her birthday is American Girl doll items. She received her first doll when she was 7 and didn't show much interest at the time. In the past year, she has been more and more interested in it. She is by no means obsessed, but as she gets older, her latent femininity is coming out.

IMO, an American Girl doll is a great Christmas gift for that age.

I defintly recommend AG. My daughter got one for 6 and then 1 for her 7th birthday. She loves the dolls so much and the values that they teach the girls are really good. Rent the AG movies and you will see. They are a expensive purchase but so worth it. I would rather spend 100 on a doll that she loves then 10 barbies, and the outfits and accessories are great to get her year round.

I'd say its the perfect age for AG doll.

PS save the box, if in time she doesnt play with it and loses interest you can always sell on ebay and get almost all your money back

My dd is 10 and really enjoys her 2 AG dolls. They were gifts from my mom to her for the last two Christmases. Her friends are into them too. I think they appreciate them more at this age than when they are younger.

That is the age for AG - my girls are just starting to think about them & it is the age 9-10-11 that they seem to be really into them, based on my friends dds who are that age.

My DD is 9 and plays with her AG dolls all the time. She also reads the books over and over. Some of DD's friends are already 10 and they are all still very much into the dolls. We just took DD to NYC to the AG store & cafe and she had a great time. I'd love to do it again in a year or two. I'm all for anything that keeps them little girls for as long as possible. So many kids seem to grow up too fast these days.

Great age. I've lost of friends who couldn't wait, and bought at 5,6 or 7 and many of the dolls were just ruined. My daughter is 9 and has 2 that she adores, and plays with.

My daughter is 9 and loves her AG dolls. She's been collecting them since she was 6 and still plays with them. She loves the historical books. The AG products are great because they teach good values. We also got her some of the books which talk about growing up, peer pressure & friends etc. I think they provide great information and are perfect for girl's her age!

The subject matter covered in the books is really pretty heavy. Based on that and the cost of the dolls and accessories, I'd say 9/10 is about right.

My DD was interested in her AG doll until around 12. She's in high school now and every so often buys a new outfit for it and dresses it up, but doesn't play with it. It sits on the doll bed in her room, basically on display now. It got plenty of use before it was retired. I think 9 years old is the perfect age for them to enjoy this kind of doll.

My daughter started reading the American Girl books in kdg and by 4th grade had 3 of the dolls. She will be a college freshman this year and we still have all the dolls and accessories but now they are packed away. I purchased those thinking of them as family heirlooms that she could someday pass on to her daughter and maybe even her grandaughter. :lovestruc

Thank you so much for all of the great advice.....based on what everyone is saying I now know what dd will be getting for Christmas.

I knew you guys could help put my mind at ease!!!

The best part is we live in Alabama so going to Atlanta is no problem. Her bday will be in February so I think we will be taking a trip to the AG in Atlanta and making a weekend of it!!!

I think this is a great age for an AG doll. Unlike a younger child, she'll be better able to appreciate how special her doll is and that it should be taken care of. I received my first one at 8 and have kept her all this time. Any younger than this age, and it might be "just another doll" if you kwim.

our DD got her AG doll around 9 years old, and played with it quite a bit. She's now 16, and while she doesn't play with it, it is certainly one of her prized possessions. It's on display in her room with all of her other dolls. The books really encouraged her to read, and even now she wants to go see the new movie that's out, although she has already told us how 'wrong' it is!

We go to AG store in New York at least 2x a year and I can tell you just by speaking with other parents girls as old as 14 and 15 are shopping for their dolls. :thumbsup2

My dd was six when she got her first AG doll. She is STILL playing with it!
I have heard that the My Disney Girl doll clothes will fit the AG dolls. :goodvibes

And I can not tell you how much DD loves dressing like her doll.

I got mine at 10. It was Felicity when she first came out back in the early 90's.

And yes as a 20-something adult I still give the doll attention sometimes. I'm just jealous that the store wasn't around when I had my doll as a kid.
