OT. iPhone in Canada

Ya RIM is set to release a new handheld device that is a ull screen similar to the iPhone LG and Samsung also have iPhone killers so to speak. I can't wait to see what the new BB is going to be like I may have to grab one I am sure the wife will be impressed with me as I just got a new one a few months ago LOL.

Thanks everyone for the info - Thanks Ham Ham for the pictures!!!

I don't want to buy something that I won't use enough to justify the cost. For me, the casual user, the uses vs. cost is something to consider. They look so cool though. I will check out that website mentioned!

Is the game available for iPod Touch too?

I like iPhone but don't wanted to be bounded by a 3-year-contract plus an extra $30-40 per month. Now I would take a back-step and re-consider iPod Touch

I though about getting an iPod touch. It doesn't have a camera or blue tooth.

Head on over to the iTunes link below. The site says the game is compatible with the iPod Touch.

Thanks Ham Ham. What does it mean by "Requires iPhone 2.0 Software update"?

BTW, another other differences between iPod Touch and iPhone?

This is my viewpoint regarding iPod Touch and iPhone, maybe you can give me some suggestion:

1). Camera - I don't expect much on a 2.0 Megal Pixel camera
2). I don't really require frequent access to Internet (since I either work from office, or home office). Otherwise, I prefer to use Wi-Fi
3). I need the music feature, calendar feature, and contact feature
4). $199 for a 8GB iPhone is attractive. I spoke to a Rogers representative, and he said that the offer is only for New Customers. If a existing customer wants iPhone, it would cost $249 ($349 for 16GB) plus a one-time $35 activation. Then I can simply add the data plan ($30/month) to my existing voice plan for the next 36 months. So my cost for iPhone would be $284 + $30x36 :scared: So I guess I'd better off getting a iPod Touch 8GB for $299 :)

In order to use the app store you need an iPhone or iPod Touch running the 2.0 OS. While the OS update is free for iPhones you have to buy it for an iPod Touch. I don't know if the iPod Touches for shipping now include the OS update.

To answer some of your other questions, a Touch is a great PDA as long as you have WiFi access. I have my Touch syncing email, contacts and calendar with work's Exchange server and Mobile me. I'm still getting an iPhone because I only want to carry a single device.

In the end a Touch is always more cost effective because you're not paying for the voice/data plan. You have to want the continuous data access to get an iPhone and/or the GPS. The phone really doesn't matter IMO.

The itouch has grabbed my interest but I am confused as to how I access the internet, email etc?

I have looked into the iphone and think it is not for me. I mostly want it for internet/email access when travelling (usually to the USA), the roaming charges with Rogers are crazy.

I am also considering waiting for the Blackberry Bold. After seeing the Blackberry curve I can see they are making moves to improve their web browsing.

Hi everyone, just curious to know if ipod touch and iphone are identical except the phone/camera/bluetooth? Can I install/use Google Chat / Yahoo messenger in touch/iphone?

I understand that it is wireless/ wi fi capable. I am just trying to wrap my brain around what makes it different than an iphone, blackberry or something I have to pay a company for access.

Will it only work in a wi fi hot spot? Sorry for the dumb questions!!

iPhones, Blackberrys & other smart phones connect via mobile networks and can send and receive mobile data over the cell networks where available.

Blackberrys were amongst the first to have e-mail pushed to the phone. Other smart phones check for their mail every few minutes.

iPhone can use mobile data or wifi to gain access to the net. I believe that a Blackberry product with WiFi will be release later this year.

Perhaps someone who uses a BB can provide more info.

Since I do not have a smart phone (loooong stroy) all the info here I've provided is through research.

Feel free to contribute and more up to date info.

1st Question. You nailed it. Currently there is a 32GB iPod Touch and if you want to upgrade to iPhone/Touch OS 2.0 it will cost $9.99.
Latest iPhone has is 16 GB comes with 2.0 OS

2nd Question
I believe so but you may want to look around here.

Correct. You need a WiFi hot spot to get data. That's why I want to get an iPhone. That said I would imagine that 90% of the time I will be fetching data over WiFi instead of the phone network.

Google chat and MSN only work on the Palm Treo and Black Berry they do not work on the iPhone some friends that each have iPhones were PO'd at teh non google chat functionality and again when MSN wouldn't work. I am not to sure if either will work on the new Samsung or LG models.

I did find Meebo. It provides a web UI to AIM, Yahoo, Google and MSN chat. Their support page says it works on iPhone/iPod Touch. I haven't tried it but it might be an option.

Hello, I just received my iPhone 3G from Rogers. Huh, I didn't know that ~~ white iPhone means only the back is white...the front is still black :(

A couple of questions for any iphone professionals...

1). Is it a MUST to get a iTune Store account (and provide them with credit card)? I was stuck in the progress - after I inputted my credit card number, it prompt to ask me enter my Apple ID and password (which I don't have). So up till now, nothing is setup (although I think I have upgraded firmware).

2). If I purchase any games from itunes store in the future, do they charge the credit card on file? Will they charge USD by default? (e.g. I have a USD currency credit card, so I wonder which card to give). I actually wanted to purchase that Disney card game someone mentioned in the previous page, but seems that is a UK site?

3).
a). Do I (can I) officially switch off the iPhone at all (e.g. if I don't want to receive any calls)? My previous PDA phone cannot be switched off, only can switch to "Flight Mode"/
b). Do I have to turn off 3G before I switch on Wi-Fi?
c). Is there a way to track/trace my data usage? I don't want to go over that :)
d). Can I read a ebook on iPhone (like what I previous did in my PDA phone)?

4). my colleagues told me that I can sync calendar/contact with my google account, instead from Outlook. How?

5). Another dumb question. In the past 3 years, I used a PDA phone (Windows Mobile 5/6). Whatever program I opened (e.g. IE, Contacts), it remains in the memory until I go to Setting -> RAM -> Close all programs. Does this happen to my iPhone too? I don't see any "x" icon for me to close Safari, Youtube, GPS etc. I just press the "circle" button and it takes me back to the main screen. Do I have to "officially" close these programs? I just afraid if there will be continuous transmission of data that exceeds my $30 data plan :P

6). When I visit WDW this Christmas (and if I wanted to bring my iPhone) - I guess I would be better off to switch the phone to Flight Mode all the time? This way my iPhone will serve as iPod Touch :)

Sorry too many questions :p

Can't answer this one since I had an account.

You are charged in local currency and if you attach a credit card to the account the validate the address against the country. There are some sites that show how to buy from other country stores using gift cards from those countries but I have never tried it.

3).
a). Do I (can I) officially switch off the iPhone at all (e.g. if I don't want to receive any calls)? My previous PDA phone cannot be switched off, only can switch to "Flight Mode"/
If you hold the power button down for a few seconds an off slide will appear that will let you turn the phone off. If you asking if you can stop push email, that you can also be done by switching the accounts to Fetch/Manual.

b). Do I have to turn off 3G before I switch on Wi-Fi?
No. The phone will prefer Wifi over 3G over Edge. It will seemlessly switch between them.

c). Is there a way to track/trace my data usage? I don't want to go over that :)
Go to Settings->General->Usage.

d). Can I read a ebook on iPhone (like what I previous did in my PDA phone)?
Technically it would depend on the file format. Esthetically it is up to you.

4). my colleagues told me that I can sync calendar/contact with my google account, instead from Outlook. How?
I don't know.

5). Another dumb question. In the past 3 years, I used a PDA phone (Windows Mobile 5/6). On iPhone apps quit when you press the home button. Nothing but the OS runs in the background. That said if you have push email or timed fetch the OS will be talking over the phone network all of the time.

6). When I visit WDW this Christmas (and if I wanted to bring my iPhone) - I guess I would be better off to switch the phone to Flight Mode all the time? This way my iPhone will serve as iPod Touch :)
Under Settings->General->Network you can make sure that Data Roaming is off. This way the phone won't use the cell network for data when you're off of your home network. This way you would still be able to receive phone calls.
