Any recommendations for an inexpensive flat iron that works well? I like the idea of the ones that straighten from wet to dry - do they really work or just sizzle the hair? Also, what kind of serum or "stuff" do you put in your hair to protect it from the heat? Thanks for any tips, experience, advice, etc.!

I straighten my very thick, kinky hair. I don't use a flat iron, I blow dry and then use a very large barrel curling iron. I feel it gives my hair more shape. If judging from hair dryers, I would say pony up the money for the more expensive one. I used a T3 hair dryer for years, it recently died. I bought a $40 cheapie from the hairdresser, and I hated it. I went right back on line for my T3. T3 is a tourmaline dryer, it costs about $200 retail (sorry budget folks) I got it for $100 from ebay. My last one was over 5 years old when it died. My understanding is that the wet to dry ones are really hard on your hair. I dry and then iron, so that is not from personal experience. I use Moroccan Oil on my hair (again, sorry budgeters) it is expensive $30 for a 100ml bottle, but it works great, and you only use a little bit at a time. Like a nickel sized amount. It leaves my hair soft and smooth and shiny.

I highly recommend going to your local TJMax, Marshalls, Ross type of store and seeing what they have in stock. I have a fantastic "salon quality" wet to dry flat iron that I love and managed to get on clearance for $25.

Do you have a Sally Beauty Supply store in your area?
If not they are online as well.
I recommend the GVP flat iron. Heats up to 410 just like the Chi flat iron and comes in many colors. We have 3 in our household.
I had left my Chi flat iron at a hotel and when I called it was never found...conveniently.
I couldnt afford another at the time and someone recommended the GVP to me.
I have had one for about a year and just purchased 2 more at Christmas time.
And they are only $59!!
Work's the same as the Chi, gets as hot and I love the various colors.
My fave is my gold toned GVP with rhinestones!!!

I see they have their limited edition chrome colors now. I gotta get the Pink!!

Thanks for the answers so far!

Can you put the serum/oil on dry hair, then iron?

We use the remington one. it is awesome and cheap. Only about $30. My daughter has had friends over and and they can't believe how good it works. One of her friends has a really expensive flat iron from her sister who is a hair dresser and she likes remington one hands down. She doesn't use the expensive one anymore. She bought a remington. We don't use any oil.

I use the Chi oil. But when my hair is damp. then i blow dry then flat iron.
i have very wavy and frizzy hair normally. this keeps it looking great in high humidity and mist and rain.
