Kind of off topic, except I don't want to go out to eat:thumbsup2
MIL has IBS and I want to insure she can eat with us. We are kind of a foodie family and she definitely is not. We want something we will enjoy eating and something she can comfortably eat. I was thinking salmon with a low sodium soy sauce/honey/ginger/sesame seed marinade, rice, and asparagus. Maybe add some french bread and salad? Am I on the right track? No garlic, low fat, not spicy...help, I'm not used to dietary restrictions!

Depending on what triggers her IBS, you might want to rethink using sesame seeds, not sure about the asperagus.

That is part of the problem, she won't tell us. She prepares asparagus at home, so I figured that was safe. :confused3I can leave the sesame out of the marinade and add it as a garnish.

As someone who has struggled with severe IBS for a long time these things are on my avoid list: any seeds or nuts (the fragments can irritate the digestive tract), caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, really spicy or fried foods.

That being said I would avoid the sesame seeds both in and on the meal. Also I would use perhaps a brown rice, as it is recommended often to eat higher fiber in addition to low fat.

Hope that helps, good luck!

The key sentence is that IBS differs in everyone.

I have Crohn's and my system started hurting just reading the meal. Salad landed me a 3 day stay in the hospital, I can't drink pure milk. I used to not be able to eat Mexican or Italian, but have no problems with either anymore. Fish is completely not an option, although most recommend it.

My "bland" meal is usually a boneless chicken breast on the Foreman Grill, pork chops or steaks work too. I usually make a mashed potato and some type of noodles, even if it's just plain noodles.

It may not be the healthiest meal in the world, but getting nourished when in pain is important too. I would come right out and ask your MIL is this meal would be OK.

My DS has Crohns and he would never be able to eat that meal. He pretty much sticks to what we refer to a white food. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts, turkey slices, mashed potatoes, plain pasta or rice.

my DD has crohns and one thing we have learned is that everyone's triggers are different. She really cant eat any salad or raw veggies but cooked ones seem okay. she lives on mac and cheese. I would ask your MIL for suggestions but definitely seeds and nuts are not a good idea. ask what her favorites are or what you can add as sides that she could enjoy.

My DH has IBS (not Crohn's). He would do well with that meal. I would probably serve the sesame seeds on the side so that he didn't have to eat them if he didn't want to, but otherwise it sounds great. Lots of simple foods. Lots of veggies. DH has trouble with heavy foods and dairy. I'd encourage brown rice if possible, but otherwise, DH would be thrilled to be invited to your place for dinner!

As others have said it really depends on her and what she can and can not eat. My dh has crohns and he would be OK with that meal. in fact for him (unlike many here) he NEEDS salad everyday in his diet!

Thanks guys. I appreciate the thoughts. She is stubborn and won't tell us anything medical related :confused3, but she will definitely complain. Its a no win situation. I have chicken breasts as well, so I will cook those up too and make chicken salad for skiing Sunday from the leftovers. I know she eats salad, again, she makes them at home. Maybe I will do potatoes too and make potato salad for later in the week? That should cover the bases and she can pick and choose.
