This is OT but I'm posting here because I'm sure there are lots of moms and dads here.

Today I threw out the Big Bird Lamp we got for my daughter (she'll be 9 in May) before she was born. We got it at the VOA and may have paid $2 for it. When she was 4 she gave it to her little brother because it was too babyish. He has since graduated to a Mickey Mouse Light.

So today in our continuing strive to declutter our house I decided it was time to throw out Big Bird. He was sitting collecting dust, unplugged on DS's dresser. It had the tell tale burn mark on the lamp shade where it once fell (so I really felt that it isn't safe anymore). So today was the day. DS was fine. DD burst in to tears. She hasn't had it in her room in almost 5 years. She likes Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers but she was crying over Big Bird. I guess I'm a little sad too. Part of her childhood is being thrown away in her mind. Now we have a memory box and a time capsule for her that she will get when she's older. It has various "first" outfits, the first pair of jeans from Grandma W. and the 1st Easter Dress from Grandma G.

But I think today she too realizes she is growing up. That Big Bird is being left behind and she is not quite ready to let go. To tell you the truth, neither am I.

I'd have to go retrieve it from the trash and keep it. I have a few special things from my childhood that I was "allowed" to keep whereas my dh has nothing....it seems to make him pretty sad even though he wouldn't admit it. My kids really think it's neat that i have some of my old stuff.:)

If the lamp is still in okay condition to make DD feel better take it out of the trash and take a photo of it to put in her keepsake box. Maybe a picture of her holding it. That way she'll always be able to remember it, but won't feel as bad that it's gone.

That's an excellant idea, I'm going out right now to get it.

Thank you.

I have a Blue ceramic teddy lamp made for my son before he was born 35 years ago. A long with a blue stuffed teddy with a music box, his great gram bought him....I gave them to his son my grandson, Mamma's little man and son was so thrilled to have them brought out and given to him, that I actualy kept them. Even his Big Bird, that no longer can be understood and fur is a shaggy mess, But he did want to know WHY I would throw out his Mickey blanket, from K-Mart that had a huge melted Silly Putty stuck to it.

DD now past 30 still uses her Mickey nursery lamp that she got from some of my parents friends when she was born. The night light on mickey quit working years ago the shade has a couple of small battle scars but otherwise is in great condition an DD uses the lamp daily as her room has no window. I honestly don't know what it would take for DD to part with her much loved Mickey Mouse lamp that has been in her room for more than 30 yrs.
