DD7 has entered a story telling contest at her school tomorrow. Her story is approx. 5 minutes long and she will have no aids at all. She will be speaking in front of several hundred people. She is a very brave 7 year old girl but also gets overwhelmed very easily. I am worried that the whole thing will be too much for her and she will not be able to remember her story. Last year (when she 6) she was determined to enter the contest but I felt she simply wasn't mature enough. I told her....NEXT YEAR... Well next year is here and of course she remembered what I said.

DD7 is in a regular classroom but has SID tendencies, severe ADHD and ASD tendencies. I hope it goes ok tomorrow and pray she can get through it without getting too overwhelmed by the whole experience.

Please send pixie dust her way. Her name is Gracyn.
I am also posting this on the Canadian board.
Thank you
Suzy V.

Graycn, one sentence at a time, and enjoy it, no matter how far, at least you did YOUR best for today!!

She'll be in my thoughts, will look forward to the update!!

Lots of pixie dust going your way.
Gracyn, you are a very brave little girl and I know you will do the very best you can. I have spoken a lot in front of groups (even in front of several hundred people at the same time).
I am sure that everyone in the audience will be wishing good thoughts for you. Remember that they are there because they want to hear what you have to say. And (one thing that helps me a lot) is to remember that the audience doesn't know what you are going to say. If you make a little mistake, the other people probably won't even know because it is your story and they haven't heard it before!

Try to imagine telling the story to a small group of friends or your family. Speak slowly, in a regular tone of voice. Smile, and try to have fun.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful support. We just got back from the competition. :teeth:

Not only did Gracyn manage ok, she WON 1st prize :cloud9: . I was SHOCKED. I couldn't believe how easy it was for her. She was amazing. She was a natural. She had no coaching from me at all (she wanted to do this on her own she said, I have never seen a 7 year old this independent).

I think it is time for me to start giving her a little more credit. I am just so overprotective of her (EVERYONE says so).

Again, thank you

Suzy V.

Thanks for the update.
Way to go, Girl!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Congratulations! What a wonderful story. I too have a daughter with the same diagnosis. Although she is not yet in kindergarden, I agonize over how she will do, and whether she will be accepted. I truly believe that if given the opportunity, our wonderful daughters will achieve their goals, and truly inspire us. Thank you for such a heartwarming story. Mom to Juliet (always perfect in my eyes). Stacey2grls

That's wonderful - well done to her.

Sue

PS It is hard to let go and give them more independance but you just have to learn to do it.

Thank you everyone for all the encouraging/congratulatory comments.
We are just so proud of her.

Have a great night.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, I just wanted to share with you that DD8 entered the story telling contest again this year. It was this morning. There were 17 students entered and she had to sit for 1.5 throughout the entire competition. She did great waiting for her turn (she was the last one to tell her story). She didn't place this year but did marvelous.
All of the other students had simply retold a story from a book, but DDs story was completely original.

We are so proud of our little girl! :sunny:
She has come such a long way in the past few years. :lovestruc

I'm sure you are a VERY proud Mom and I don't blame you a bit!!!!! :thumbsup2

Good for you, Gracyn!

Awesome. Graclyn you are a very special girl. Always do your best and you will go far.

if possible try to have her use her fingers, have each finger for a main idea to talk about that may help

How incredibly proud you must be of your superstar :woohoo: :woohoo:
