Which is the adverb? I'm having trouble with 5th grade language arts. :confused3

I stood and walked in.

I think that it's the word 'in' because adverbs give information about the
time, place and manner of the action.

Adverbs are words that describe verbs...such as quickly, happily, ect.

An adverb tells HOW, WHERE, WHEN and TO WHAT EXTENT

Such as:
The child speaks cleary. Clearly is an adverb because it tells HOW a child talks.

They sing well. Well is and adverb because it tells HOW they sing.
He looked up. Up is and adverb because it tells WHERE.

The most important thing to remember is a word is not a part of speech until it is in a sentence. So look for the word that tells, how, where, when and to what extent in the sentence!

Hope that helps. I could go into more detail, but in 5th grade that should be enough!

I think that it's the word 'in' because adverbs give information about the

This is partly true, although in can also a preposition. It all depends on how it is used in a sentence. (There it is a prepostion)

but I thought that was a preposition.. and that's all it told us in the dictionary.

to answer a question about your verbs. There are two verbs in that sentence, "stood" and "walked"
In this case, I would ask,
How did I stand? (no info) How did I walk? (no info)
Where did I stand (no info) Where did I walk? (IN)
When did I stand? (no info) When did I walk? (no info)
To what extent did I stand? (no info) To what extent did I walk? (possibly in here as well)

So... given your options, you can determine that "in", while commonly used as a preposition, is actually your adverb.

The PP is right that you have to remember that words are often not given a part of speech until used in a sentence. Think of a work like off and how many ways that word can be used.

I love grammar! I think that it is like a puzzle!:)

I wish you were at my house during homework time. I HATE grammar. I think it's because it's not always black and white. Now ask me for help with math and I'm thrilled. I love anything to do with numbers, there's no "gray" area, it's either right or wrong.
