OT: Homework Help - DS/Parts of Speech

Help! DS needs a little help with an assignment - and I'm not sure....

Sentence includes "the plate was in the center of the table".

What part of speech is "center"? Adjective? Adverb?

Yikes! I should know this, but it's been a looong time since I did this. I think my kids are smarter than I am (but don't tell them!)

Anybody?

"The center" is the object of the preposition???? the preposition being "in"??? It's been a long time and I may be embarrassing myself.

Noun - person, place or thing - "center" is essentially a place.

I think it's a noun. With center being the "place" where the plate is.

I vote noun, and also recommend dictionary.com we used it quite often last year when DS got stuck.

In other words, the noun that follows the preposition is the object.

Also, in the sentence; "the plate was in the center of the table" - "table" is also an object of the preposition, because the table -the noun - follows "of" - a preposition.

And to take it a little further (farther? LOL), "in the center" is an adverb phrase describing "where."

Thanks everyone! We are going with 'noun'. We had checked dictionary.com, but we weren't certain after that either.... I'll let you know if he gets it wrong. Otherwise, figure 'noun' is right.

It's times like this that I am really thankful that I am the mom and not the student anymore...

Your DS will get it right by putting NOUN.

My DD10 says I drive her crazy but I'm always correcting two words... WELL and GOOD. I've said it so many times over the years that she rolls her eyes when someone else uses one of them incorrectly when talking to us. She wonders if I'll correct them or not.

I agree in this instance, center is a now (eg a place.)

Check out the old Schoolhouse Rock videos/songs on itunes or youtube. My kids thought they were a crazy (and they are) but now they sing along "a noun is a person, place or thing".

Madlibs are a fun way to learn the parts of speech, too- gives a fun reason to have to know what an adverb or exclamation or whatever is.
