OT: Help!!! Need to get cat pee out of carpet!!

I'm going to have to try some of these ideas. We no longer have our cat, have had the carpet professionally cleaned, I've cleaned it but I've noticed that the carpet contiunes to dis-color" in those areas over time, until the next cleaning....which makes me think not everything has gotten out and it just keeps coming back. I can't smell anything unless its been really humid out them it might smell just a bit. Its just the brownish looking spots that show up, grrrrr. Loved the cat though, she hated DH, LOL

For fresh "accidents", grab some paper towels and fold four or so of them over and lay on top and just leave it there to soak up a lot of it. Then pick those up after they appear to be saturated and sprinkle a pile of Arm and Hammer Pet Odor powder (it is in yellow boxes about 8 inches tall, 2 inches deep, and four inches wide - look in the pet section at Target or anywhere like that - they are less than $2 per box, much cheaper than Natures Miracle, etc.). You have to pour it so that the powder is at least 1/2 inch wider than the wet spot, and then fill in the entire area and make it at least 1/2 inch deep over the entire area. This soaks up nearly 100% of the dampness and odor. If you catch them when they are fresh, this is all you really need to do. If the stain has been there longer, then a home carpet cleaner and Nature Miracle is a good option.

The above method was given us by a very good professional carpet cleaner and it works extremely well. Our cat pees on the carpet at least once a day most of the time, and we catch them early and take the above steps - no stain, no odor if we catch them early enough. You've got to soak out the mousture before you can eliminate the odor - pouring Natures Miracle directly onto a wet spot won't be very effective at all. If you use the paper towels and powder first, you increase the effectiveness by leaps and bounds.

Ooh, ooh! What's the ratio of hydrogen peroxide to baking soda?

And sorry for being duhhh, but where does one get hydrogen peroxide?

It can be found usually right next to the rubbing alcohol in the health and beauty care section of any store

HAs anyone ever tried that Urine Gone? It used to be sold on TV but I notice it is in stores now.

I am going from memory here, but I believe it is ...

12 oz HP
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ajax dish soap

I mix and put into spray bottle. Make sure that you use all or throw out leftovers. The mixture really cant be saved.

Soak the area and let dry. Then vacuum. You might want to test if you have dark colored carpet. Mine is very light and I have not had a problem with discoloration.

You can find the hydrogen peroxide in the same place you would find rubbing alcohol. Usually in the first aid sections.

I used Urine Gone and it really does work.
My son wanted me to see his cat and brought the cat to my house, he was holding his cat, then the next thing we knew the cat jumped out of his hands and ran to the corner of the computer room and left his mark on my carpet. its smelled so bad that I spent next few hours trying to get the smell out, cleaning walls, carpet.
As the smell just wouldnt come out and made the whole room smell so bad that you could even smell it in the next room, the next day my son brought over his spray bottle of Urine Gone and you know what, just like the name the smell was all gone.
Thank god, as I was ready to kill my son LOL.

Thank you so much!

Buy a blacklight that can be carried around, has a long cord, or you have an extension cord. Wait until night, turn off all lights and turn on the blacklight. The cat urine will GLOW brighter than the rest of the carpet. A few other stains might show up, but that nice little puddle kitty has left will be instantly visible. Sadly, you may discover kitty has a second favorite spot you never knew about. :headache: :scared:

My cats started doing this as we have been moving furniture around the house, and it became so bad they were doing it several times a day. There is a product called "comfort zone" which is a plug-in that releases pheremones (spelling?) that has caused them to stop. In fact, they marked the other day, and that was how I noticed the product was gone and it was time for a refill. It seems to really help. It is not the cheapest thing in the world, but before we got it we were at our wits end, and now we are just working on getting the residual smell out. (Nature's Miracle has been helping, but it seems to be lingering). I highly recommend the plug-in.

My friend who has 8 dogs and 3 cats told me that baking soda is the best thing to use. If the spot is not wet, then wet it with a glass of water. Add enough baking soda to completely cover the area of the spot, and then a little extra. Let that dry completely (about 24 hours), then vacuum the baking soda. You may need to repeat this step two or three times to get it out completely. She swears by it and says it gets out the smell and the entire stain (all the way down to the foam pad!)

We use "simple solution" to get rid of cat urine smell, and other pet accidents.
Its a enzyme cleaner, as others have mentioned you have to soak the area and get down to the pad.
You can get it at pet stores, and now they even carry it at meijer.

To the poster who's cat is refusing to use the box.
Did you try the litter box, w/ different litter in it.

We were having some cat box issues, and we did an experiment, we bought 4 of those cheap 4" high litter boxes, and used our other litter boxes too.

We bought the small bags of different litter. We got unscented ones, the paper ones, clumping, non clumping, the crystals kind.

Then we put all the boxes of litter out for about a 1-2 weeks. Then we went w/ the one that controlled odor, and the cats liked best.

I have heard of some cats, who refuse to poop, or make another deposit into a litter box, that already has a poop in it. Finiky cat, but that soln worked for that owner.

Good luck solving your cat problems.

first off that crap they sell on tv that you use a black light to see the spot didnt work ,i clean for a guy i tried all kinds of stuff ,finally i said lets try baking soda and white vinegar 2 days i went back to see if i needed to try something else the smell was gone,i couldtn believe it all the crap he bought and alot of it ruined is rug it was a teal but the soda and vinegar did the trick and it was also a thick carpet as well ,no smell to this day over a yr i did that ...Godd luck any questions pm me :thumbsup2

Just be careful, to my understanding, hydrogen peroxide may bleach out your carpet. Please be careful if your carpet is not white and you use peroxide...it may cause discoloration.

As always suggested, test an inconspicuous spot with whatever you plan on cleaning your carpet with to make sure it won't cause any damage ior discoloration. Would be horriable to treat a spot in the middle of a heavy traffic area like your living room, and your brown carpet now has a nice white spot where ur cat peed because the cleaning chemicals bleached the carpet.

Good luck with however you plan on cleaning your carpet.

BTW I have 5 cats and 2 dogs of my own. Some pet-zyme or whatever urine remover that they sell at petsmart works well. Get a squirt bottle to fill it with and just give regular treatments to the carpet. It won't bleach it out or anything.

I didn't read all the posts b/c we don't have this problem anymore, but my SIL just told me about a product her vet recommended to them that really works. Of course she doesn't know the name of it, but she described it really well... you buy it at the nursery (Plants) in the fungicide section. It's a white bottle that is split on the bottom w/ 2 different compartments so the chemicals mix when you pour it out. She said they used it and have no more odor and the cat stays away from that spot also... she pulled up the carpet in the corner and even treated the pad/concrete.... White bottle w/ green lettering. I'm going to the nursery later and will see if I can figure out what she's describing....

My kitty had the same issue - and peed ALL OVER our house (carpet, both futons, wood door).

The only thing I've found that worked (and yes, I tried Nature's Miracle - which works like a charm for doggie urine - it helped us through potty training two boxer puppies! -but it doesn't work for cat urine. It will seem to - but the smell will come back, esp. in humidity) is what my vet told me to do - one part bleach to 10 parts water. I put it in a spray bottle and test sprayed some areas - and then hosed everything down! :rotfl: I actually just did my office - after a bout of humidity, the pee smell was back in full force. I sprayed down the carpet (it's dark green, and the bleach doesn't hurt it at all, but I tested a spot in the closet) - and three days later - fresh and dry. My vet said it's the only thing that will permanently remove the smell. So far, he's right.

Maybe I should have my vet come over and clean my whole house! :lmao:

You can always try Nature's Miracle, which will refund your money if it doesn't work. In my case, it didn't work, so after sending in for my refund I tried many other things. What finally worked for us is Odormute. I got it at a local pet store. It is an enzyme product. You can do a search on google and find more info on it and where to buy it.

The carpet cleaning company called ChemDry has a guaranteed pet urine odor removal system. If the odor isn't gone, they will redo it or give you a refund. It's expensive though, so if it's all over the house, that won't be an option for you. Another carpet guy told me that unless you replace the pad underneath or deodorize the underneath flooring (especially if it's wood), that the smell will come back. I had a problem with urine and didn't want to pay the extra amount for the pet odor removal since we might be putting in different flooring soon, so I just had the carpet guy clean and deodorize. A couple of yellow spots came back a few days later, so he came back (no charge) and cleaned those spots again. Since then, no spots and no smell (and it's pouring rain out right now so the humidity is very high). Get a professional and have them deodorize.

OP here: I have tried numerous things and I thought I would post an update.

First of all, my cat has no UTI and his kidney levels are actually improving due to the new rx food. So their recommendation was to put him on an antidepressant. :rotfl2: That just cracked me up! Does anyone else find it funny that my cat needs prozac??

Ok here is what I've tried:

I tried the vinegar/water combo and then sprinkled baking soda. Unfortunately that did not work. The smell came back. :sad2:

The next thing I did was to split the spot into 3 equal parts and I tried 3 different products to see which one works the best. Here is what I found:

Nature's Miracle Orange Oxy Power--I thought this was going to work, but as it dries I can still smell a faint smell of pee coming through.

Petzyme Cleaner--This was the least effective. I still really smell the cat pee smell after trying this. This will definitely be going back. :sad1:

Simple Solution Odor and Stain Remover--I think this one worked the best. I bought a big jug and I plan to try treating the entire spot with this one as well as some other older spots.

I'll keep you posted. I think I may have found another solution as well. I tried it in the upstairs where he went a few weeks ago and it smells pretty good up there. Here is the recipe I used:

1 Quart hot water
1/4 oxy clean
1/4 cup Tide powder (I used liquid as that was all I had)
1/3 cup white vinegar

Mix together in a spray bottle. Shake vigorously. Apply generously to the carpet. Use a scrub brush to really work into the fibers.

I let it dry a bit and then sprinkled some 20 Mule Borax on top. Once that dried I vacuumed it up.

This seemed to work upstairs pretty well. The thing is that upstairs is much more dry so it is hard to tell. The basement stays humid and so the smell keeps coming back.

If the Simple Solution doesn't work in the basement, I'm going to try the above recipe. I'm a woman on a mission!! Check out the photo in my signature. :rotfl2:

My 8-year old kitty started doing this all over the office in our brand new home last year. We did the nature's Miracle thing-- that took the odor out, but he kept going. Come to find out, he didn't like that he had to step over the wall of the box to get into it. We bought him a puppy litter box that has a low entry ramp-- he can just walk in now. Since then, we haven't had any trouble. They come in several sizes, including a small puppy one that's about the size of a regular cat box.
