Hi:
Before I start getting quotes, I want to save enough to pay cash to have our house sided. Any guesses on how much it would cost to side a 2200 square foot Cape Cod style house? Thanks.

My home was hit hard by hail this April. I learned about a new EPA law from the contractors about lead paint. The new law can make getting new siding more expensive if your home was built before 1978. My home was tested and does have lead paint under the damaged siding. Now a special certified team has to do the work. I've been struggling to get insurance to pay for it, but it's the law.

I put some of what I found online below.

Vinyl Siding Cost of Compliance: Are You Exempt?

The general rule of thumb is that homeowners and do-it-yourselfers are exempt from the regulations. If any form of payment is involved, the rules apply and the cost of owning vinyl siding skyrockets.

EPA rule compliance is expensive. Here are the minimum requirements.

Test for lead paint. If lead paint might have been used on the house exterior in the past, a lead-test kit has to be used. Most houses painted before the 1960s have lead paint. If lead is detected you'll probably be required to hire a certified lead paint inspector.
Clean vinyl siding without disturbing the paint. If you pull or pound a nail you've potentially created dust and the rules apply.
Use required equipment. You'll need a half-face respirator mask with a HEPA replaceable filter cartridge, eye goggles, and disposable gloves, coveralls, and shoe booties.
Vacuum the dust. Any dust created needs special bags and disposal.
Lay 6-mil plastic sheeting. Plastic should extend about eight feet out from the house foundation to catch paint chips and dust. Roll it up and dispose of it after use.
People that are involved in vinyl siding cleaning and repair and who might contact lead paint are now strictly regulated unless specifically exempted. Inform yourself of your responsibilities by contacting your local EPA office. The vinyl siding cost estimates for cleaning and repair are going up.

Another huge factor is going to be labor and number of windows and doors(cuts that will need to be made).

I know a couple of years ago, we looked at doing it and we did not get a number quote, but we were told unless we were going to be there for several years we were not going to see our money back when we sold. At the time we lived in NC.

well we did it in Dec, we got new siding and windows.
17 windows total and one was a big bay window.
new siding on split level home and seperate garage
total was 25k.
can't really say for sure our sq foot sorry. not good with that aspect.

What kind of siding do you currently have? We had hail damage to our aluminum siding a few years ago. The contractor gave us a discount based on the current rate for aluminum because he was going to scrap it.

Our house is a 2 story with 1/2 brick in the front and a 2 car garage door. The cost was in the $10,000 range a few years ago. I don't remember exactly because we also had the roof replaced under our homeowners policy and paid for new windows out of pocket.

No lead paint.
We currently have cedar shakes (is that what you call them?)

OK - so a 20K goal would be a ballpark amount to save towards!

Thanks for the help!
